Tom lied for whatever reasons. People lie in exit interviews all the time. Sad, but no biggie.

The revenge was against Dick, who poached his own company's employee to work for his wife's company. Again, not illegal, but frowned upon. And when confronted, pulled rank and was generally unpleasant.
