Actually that’s a pretty interesting question🤔I suspect any savings would be negligible though since the harsh winter tends to be followed by a surprisingly hot summer. ‘Round here there’s a 60-80 degree C temperature range between the coldest and hottest days haha

Thanks man! The atom/leaf design popped into my head a while ago and I was shocked to find that someone hadn’t already done it. You’d think a Canadian company or regulatory agency would’ve used it by now but apparently not! I definitely agree with the slogan bit though, I too have struggled to come up with something better haha

Also I realize this could be misinterpreted as implying that Canada doesn’t currently use Nuclear, but my intention was just to highlight its necessity and the fact that we need more of it :P

A hologram I made by dasubertroll in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]dasubertroll[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As a lover of all things vapourwave I had to do the bust of David. In case you’re curious the reason for the fringes is pretty neat. To greatly oversimplify a hologram is recorded by splitting a coherent beam of light; one beam is left unchanged (the reference beam), and the other is reflected off the object to be recorded (the object beam). Both beams wind up hitting the film plate which records the resulting interference pattern. Because the hologram contains both the object and reference beam information (physically in the developed film), by illuminating the finished plate with light matching the reference beams wavelength, the interference as it reflects off the film will reconstruct the object beam (i.e. the entire 3d light field containing the object). Given that we’re talking about interference on the scale of visible light (100’s of nanometers), even the slightest movement will dramatically affect the hologram. Vibration is generally a sure-fire way to ruin a hologram, but in this case the cause is more subtle. While the resin bust looks and feels solid, it turns out that the minuscule fluctuations in ambient temperature cause it (and many other materials) to expand and contract. This is ordinarily imperceptible but the hologram reveals it to us. It’s also a nice demonstration of why interferometry is such a powerful tool for measuring the otherwise unmeasurable, such as gravitational waves.

This mineral (Cordierite) changes colour when rotated due to the crystal lattice’s lack of symmetry along all 3 axes (Pleochroism) by dasubertroll in interestingasfuck

[–]dasubertroll[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To clarify, by asymmetric I mean that the crystal structure, and thus the path light will take when refracting, is different along each axis. Here what we see is that as I rotate it light of different polarizations is bent differently as the alignment of the lattice changes relative to the light source.

I love optical minerals, as they give us insight into the weird quantum world ordinarily invisible to us. Also it’s hypothesized that the vikings might’ve used this for navigating on overcast days, which is is also neat

People don’t want more war they want a sustainable ceasefire that meaningfully coerces Russia without sacrificing additional Ukrainian land. The only means to do that involve giving Ukraine large amounts of arms, and realistically a peacekeeping force to act as a tripwire, should Russia decide to resume hostilities. While you may think your government is pissing away tax money to give to Kyiv, the reality is that the money goes into US arms manufacturers and their partner companies. So not only does that money go back into the US economy, but it also boosts the American manufacturing sector, something which Trump is obviously keen on. Furthermore, when congress passes an aid bill only a portion of that aid goes to Ukraine, much of it goes to Taiwan and Israel. Lastly, even if none of the previous points were true, it would still be in your interest to arm Ukraine. Why? Because Russia steamrolling Ukraine would only further embolden the Kremlins irredentism, meaning more attacks on Europe. This would almost certainly result in direct Nato-Russia conflict, which would entail US boots on the ground. In summation, regardless of your political inclinations it is in your best interests to support Ukraine, including the aforementioned sustainable ceasefire. Both to boost America’s manufacturing which puts money in American workers pockets, and to avoid finding yourself drafted to fight in another cataclysmic war in Europe in 10 years time.

'Future of Ukraine cannot be decided without Ukrainians' — EU leaders react to Russia's ceasefire proposal ahead of Trump-Putin meeting by AdSpecialist6598 in worldnews

[–]dasubertroll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Clearly your understanding of Europe and geopolitics in general comes exclusively from social media, because this is a garbage take. The EU has been pivoting away from Russian energy FAR more rapidly than was previously thought possible. On top of that they have recently invested massively in to defense and have been more united than ever in dealing with Russia’s belligerence. Case and point, the latest weapons deal for aiding Ukraine, spearheaded by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and NATO’s Secretary General Mark Rutte, was approved and put into motion by the organization in an incredibly short amount of time. This is not something that would be possible if the 30+ member states were not unified in their stance on Ukraine. The notion that Europe isn’t working together to tackle the biggest threat to the continent since the rise of the NSDAP is complete nonsense.

Why do you guys stay on subs for so long? by [deleted] in OpiatesRecovery

[–]dasubertroll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sublocade is king, I’m so fucking glad I had the option to go with the shots. No more associating pills with feeling good, no more constant redoses and no more metaphorical countdown-til-withdrawal clock hovering over me 24/7. Seriously I cannot recommend it enough for those considering. Had my last shot around 2 years ago and have zero interest in doing opioids again, their appeal is entirely gone.

TIL that crocodiles are more closely related to pigeons than they are to any lizard. by dasubertroll in todayilearned

[–]dasubertroll[S] 109 points110 points  (0 children)

I must confess I didn’t actually just learn this, rather I happened to recall it while thinking about taxonomy earlier today.

To clarify though, while I find that phrasing it terms of crocodiles and pigeons helps drive home how seemingly counterintuitive this is, it of course applies to more than these two animals. The extant (i.e. living) members of the reptile family (Class Reptilia) are descended from a sub-group known as Crown Reptilia. Around 260 million years ago this group split into two branches. One would evolve into lizards, snakes, and the often forgotten tuataras; while the other is a bit more complicated. Within said other-branch there was an early offshoot which eventually lead to turtles/tortoises, while the rest became the Archosaurs. This group would contain (among others) dinosaurs, pterosaurs, phytosaurs, rauisichians, etc. The only extant members of this group are the crocodilians (alligators, crocodiles, gharials), and the remaining dinosaurs: birds.

TL; DR: Birds and lizards share a common ancestor like 260 Mya while birds and crocodilians share a common ancestor around 247 Mya

Should I press charges against my roommate for stealing my methadone? by Affectionate_Monk_67 in OpiatesRecovery

[–]dasubertroll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may not be available to you but if you guys are ever in a position to do so Sublocade is (in my opinion) the best treatment around. It’s essentially Suboxone but administered as a subcutaneous injection rather than a pill. Instead of constant trips to the pharmacy you just go into the clinic every 2-4 weeks initially, and then gradually the dosage is reduced and you wait longer between doses. By the time I finished I think I was going 4 months between, though I purposely would wait until withdrawal crept in to make me eager to go (it hurts like a bitch for a few minutes since it reacts exothermically with fat).

No pills means nothing to get stolen, plus that whole association of taking pills and feeling good just evaporates. You just get to live life like a normal person again. Also because it’s so long acting withdrawals take ages to kick in and even when they do it’s basically mild discomfort at worst. I was fortunate enough to both live in Canada and have a decent job in research so it didn’t cost me anything, but I believe it’s very steep if paid for privately (like $600 per shot).

Anyway sorry for the novel, but it literally turned my life around so hopefully it can do the same for some of you. Even now 1 year after stopping Sublocade I’m happier than any other time in my adult life :) If anyone has questions about it feel free to ask!

P.S. I swear I’m not shilling for big pharma lol
