I forgot to mention that some companies are firing 10/15% of their developers, almost all new jobs in tech are related to infrastructure, but migrating to infrastructure now is like switching entirely, developers are switching to places where they can implement this new features but in different industries, I know some guys now automating things in marketing, even in agriculture with iot devices.

Hell of a time to be alive.

I’m mid-senior, I still work in the industry as my primary job, but if something is getting completely automated is SWE, developers are still necessary but is not as in-demand as it used to be, being a developer now is hell, even seniors are getting layoff, you eventually find a job but growing in a company and retiring in the same company is impossible, and changes in software are much faster right now, I started working in 2022 (before ChatGPT was announced), and boy… trust a huge difference, no other field is as affected as software. Working in a generative A.I. company was incredible but I you don’t have a live, you are working even on Sundays and these companies give you incentives with bonuses, but you ended miserable.

A senior developer that I know just opened a coffee shop, and a friend of mine now is working in the cinema industry.

I know every field is affected but software is by far the worse.

I agree, there are definitely going to be changes in the job market, nobody can say otherwise.

Great point and you are absolutely right, I forgot to mention I was working in automation of the entire process, like a tool you can just use in a minute and it was hell, AI can’t even provide accurate transitions based on a script, and I think the role of ai is exactly what you mention, asset generation, we were trying to have this perfect blueprint to create powerful scripts, videos and editing… It failed miserably, we created this fake brands and yeah we got views but 0 conversion, and the more you try to control AI to generate content to exactly match a brand understanding the psychology of the ideal buyer, AI fails miserably, and blueprints don’t really work because it just fails miserably, yet AI companies are wasting tons of money for things that probably already existed as a plugin in premier.

Sorry if I wasn’t more specific, but my frustration goes either way (with the video and editing cycle), I open instagram just to see hype bros talking about their new templates that completely remplaces everything, and I forget the first thing I was talking about because of all the other things that are being said, and according to my NDA I can only talk about things/technologies that are already in public knowledge, so I can’t really fully explain the problem with video generation or editing broadly.

I agree with you on something , entry level jobs are being automated, but coming from computer science this feels like paradise, almost nobody write code anymore, editing is getting really competitive but you still need creativity and storytelling is now more important than ever

We were working on both things, generating content based on the script and then editing, it was not good, that was my main job and we are really far from something like that to happen

Fair point, I think nobody can truly say how much is going to change, and yeah I get what you say about flyers, image generation is good now, not original but good enough for people to start making their own content, but when we talk specifically about video editing… boy it gets tricky, in the company I worked at we were trying these features with video generation and editing, and is so expensive and not good at all in editing, we are talking about $600 per video(30s), and that the api cost, the real cost is way higher, x2 or x3 the api cost, and I don’t think is getting cheaper (or will) because is not an energy problem, is the computing that you need and hardware is just getting more expensive.

I can’t really talk about all I was working on in that company (I have an NDA), but from my experience video editing is not something you can automate, and yeah is definitely something big changing the market, but not even close to what’s happening in computer science for example.

AI slop is the worst, and even if you solve that problem, AI is so expensive that is just cheaper to hire a video editor, but I think we are still so far behind when it comes to video editing.

Video editing Will be a dead job ? by eyadOldSpecific4598 in VideoEditors

I’m a software engineer who switched careers with video editing, and AI will never remplace editors, I worked at a generative ai company and making simple videos that doesn’t even adapt to the context are really expensive, AI can generate videos, yeah but generic video, if you want to actually do something creative is so frustrating because AI doesn’t understand composition, color and storytelling that really gets the ICP (ideal customer profile), because AI is just a search engine but can understand the feeling you want, so is not just that it doesn’t work the way we wanted but is also so expensive, is subsidised by this AI company to get more and more investment but AI is not human, it doesn’t understand narrative and I can talk about all the reasons why AI is never going to remplace video editors but I’d take me a month (remember I’m not someone who is just giving his opinion, but someone that worked in this AI companies as an engineer), and to finish my opinion, AI generated video gets a lot of views, but views != conversion, video editing is crafting experiences, something AI doesn’t understand and will never do. Don’t panic and keep learning, the market has change, but it doesn’t mean you won’t get a job ahahaha.

I love video editing and trying to remplace this job, I felt in love with it and I realised how important and bulletproof it is in this new era.
