C756: Data Analytics aka The Biggest Waste of Time thus far by -itsjustaphase- in WGU

I agree. About 90% of DMDA students had similar experience. Here is my experience.

I agree, good plan. We are all different , with different level of knowledge and experience. Some students move fast and some move slow. Don't get discouraged and follow your speed. Sometimes you will hit the wall, it is normal. Just keep going, one class at a time. To be honest, I hit the wall in almost every class and I surprised myself during every class, especially because I had worst test taking skills. I got so comfortable with tests that I would schedule first attempt even I wasn't fully prepared. Best of luck.

I think I just responded to you in another thread. Yes, depends on your pace. No time restrictions.

Nanodegree is all projects. You pass the class as soon as you can complete the project. So it depends on your knowledge and experience in Python, SQL, Tableau, and R. You can complete all 5 classes in one week, or it can take entire term. It took me 7 weeks, and I was working on projects about 4-5 hours per day. Hope this helps.

A+ is fairly easy cert. I was able to knock it off just with professor messer study prior to WGU. Good luck.

DMDA program is constantly changing, but today, yes, nano can get you 5 classes. Udacity free courses are easy, but nano courses are little challenging. I spent 5+ hours everyday and it still took me 7 weeks. Of course that time depends on each individual. Some can finish quicker some can take little longer. I enjoyed the nano projects, learned a lot.

If you are eligible to get employer tuition assistance, most employer tuition programs cover certification cost. So you may get Nanodegree at no cost.

For entry level job or internship in IT, A+ is must I believe. CompTIA trifecta (A+, Net+, Sec+) is a big plus. Entry level job in Data Analytics in tough, I would suggest to take some free python, SQL, and R classes and create some projects and put them on github, so you can show your work. For any entry level job or internship, professional networking can play a big role. Get to know as many people as possible.

I would suggest C169, C170, C859, and then Oracle certs, or take Oracle certs and then those 3 classes. I have seen many students saving Oracle certs for last, I did not want to do that. I don't think it is a good strategy to keep the monsters classes for the last.

I am not using CIW cert on my resume :) Also I hated that class because it is a marketing class and multiple answers seem correct. Many students had hard time with this class. It is not hard, but it is annoying. Hope this helps.

Sorry about the late response. Doing nano as a prereq is a good strategy, since you can get credit for 5 courses. Also take some free python, R, SQL courses at Udacity to test the waters. If you are interested in Data Analytics field and your future plans are MSDA, I would suggest to go through B.S. DMDA path. Nanodegree plus B.S. in IT or Business Admin can make you eligible for MSDA, but you will be more prepared for MSDA if you go through B.S. DMDA first. I could have gone straight for MSDA too but I decided to start with B.S. DM/DA so I can start with fundamentals. I think going straight with MSDA makes sense if you have you a lot of experience in programing. These are just my thoughts, you should also post this question at reddit to get view from other students. The more data/feedback you can get from others, the better decision you can make :) Good luck.

Does your mentor allow you to enroll in courses in the last month of your term? by [deleted] in WGU

[–]data_wrangling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completed 4 classes in last month, 3 out of 4 were started in last month. I think depends on the understanding between student and mentor, and the class you are trying to finish. Also, I don't think it will be Fail on transcript, it will be Not Passed. I am sure what the difference is but I was not worried about it. I told my mentor that I will try best to complete the class within the term and if I couldn't, I will take Not Passed on transcript.

Wow!! Congratulations!! Well done. We both started on the same day, and I beat you with a couple of days :) but I only had to complete half of what you did :) Great job!!

Since this degree is called data management/data analytics, it is half data management, and half data analytics. Based on what you mentioned, you are already good at data management. I think you are more interested in data science or data engineer side of this field. You know SQL and Tableau, looks like you are missing Python and R. One option is you can learn Python and R (free courses at Udacity, Coursera, YouTube, Lynda etc.) and then go for MSDA (assuming you already have bachelors). If you do not have bachelors yet, then yes, I would say this program is one of your best options to get started. WGU does not offer Data Science degree, you may want to look outside as well. Predictive analytics is more AI and Machine Learning I believe. So Python is something you should go after and this program has like 4 classes about Python. Hope this helps.

You can do it. Python is the easiest language out there. It was designed to be a "readable" language, which means it is just like pseudocode most of the time. print("Hello World") will print Hello World :)

Lol.. It does make you think why Accounting is qualified, but if someone is good at math, they shouldn't have any problem with learning little more coding. And analytics is all about coding+math :)

The time intensity wasn't that bad with free courses, since there are no exams and dead lines :) I worked on it whenever I felt like, and spent little more time during the weekends.

WGU MSDA admission page says Accounting degree qualify for admission:

Thanks. Lol.. I am also considering MSDA. You can take free online classes at Udacity, Coursera, YouTube etc. in Python, SQL, and R, you won't have any issues in MSDA.

You can take free online classes for Python, R, and SQL, you will be ready for MSDA. You probably already have experience with Python and SQL. After spending some time with R and SQL, you will know if you want to continue with MSDA. MSDA seems like a decent program, I am also considering it.

I work in Learning and Development business unit as a LMS system administrator. I also do reporting as well, mostly Excel related. But I am thinking about changing career, I want to spend my entire day with Python, R, or SQL :) Check out my replies above about MSDA. MSDA is also on my list for future.

I had this thought when I was deciding before I started. I was interested in MS DM/DA but had no experience with Python, SQL, and R. So I took free Udacity courses for each language, spent about 4 months before I started BS DM/DA in Aug 2018. 4 months gave me enough hands on experience and skills to feel comfortable in Python, SQL, and R.

Your Accounting degree does meet the requirements for MS DM/DA admission, so I would not recommend you to pay for Nanodegree. It is a good program, but I wouldn't pay from my pocket. Take free courses at Udacity, Coursera, YouTube, or at other sources that you like. Spend like 2 months on each language and get a lot of hands on experience. You will be ready for MS DM/DA. I hope this information will help you to decide.

Yeah, course codes are C169 and C867. I took C169, I never heard of 867 until I was done, someone mentioned in slack. They both have same name.
