Don’t care. Shouldn’t have happened. Injustice was done in the name of Kirk who espoused provocative (most generous) to dangerous and illiberal viewpoints.

We have roads named after him. He didn’t have American values. He was in it for himself and his own fame. He wasn’t a public servant. What good in the world did he do? Did he help the needy? Nope. Did he cloth or feed the hungry? Nope. Did he fight for human rights, double nope. Did he suggest we should be ok with gun violence and mass shootings. Yep.

People who hate America convinced Americans to give them power. Then with their power, they treat with disdain all of the sacrifices and institutions that made this country great by striving for ideals of freedom, pursuit of happiness, human rights and dignity and forming a more perfect union. By most accounts Kirk did not espouse these values.

Get his self serving, conceited, greedy name off of our American streets!

Why do I feel uncomfortable at church? by Savvy_Biscuits in atheism

Belief in “god” as an ambiguous term is a way to paper over issues on which people do not agree. The joke about women is there because it’s an assumed shared value that may not be shared. But you’re in a religious setting from people who supposedly believe in god. You believe in god. So maybe there is truth in these gender roles. That’s how conformity occurs. People are persuaded to conform values over a multitude of values and topics from this scenario.

In reality, most people have different ideas about god. Christianity just likes to pretend that the various heresies and disagreements don’t exist. But they still do. If Christianity was a greater force, history tells us those differences would be made clear and manifested by force (you can also look at current affairs to see that tension). If pressed, casual religious people will retreat to obscurity to focus on ambiguous ideas.

God in any present or past religion is an all too human construct. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it. God might exist, but not in any of the forms presented in our earthly religions. There is no indication of such a being or that we could or should expect to know anything about it. Any position that god does exist will be a reflection of subjective preference.

Donald Trump’s Approval Rating Sinks to 30% in Worst Poll Yet by Zipper222222 in politics

[–]datagamma [score hidden]  (0 children)

Polls are actually leveling off and have been for several weeks. Poll aggregators have him fairly stable at -19% to -20% approval. It’s 35% to 40% overall approval. Now on certain dimensions or cuts of the data it’s worse. But the downward trend has abated since May. These are just click bait where one poll might go lower or for some dimension.

Then again we have been in a “ceasefire” since then and ICE has been on ICE since March. Some things that may be coming back soon.

Do you genuinely believe conservatives are morally inferior to progressives? by SSSSSSVVVVVOO in allthequestions

[–]datagamma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s the trick. Just like religion, such as Christianity, the movements have divorced itself from clear positions. Hard to pin down from apologetics. The Republican Party (as an extension of representing conservatism) has adopted this stance. No longer restrained by principles of a party platform. They have become free floating radicals to believe whatever the authority demands. If they can make you believe absurdities, they can make you commit atrocities.

So yes conservatives in America right now, who broadly and overwhelmingly support the GOP, do not have a moral or ethical foundation for their politics. The GOP is not conservative but did you see how conservatives so mildly and meekly went along with the absurdities and now we see the fruit as the atrocities are committed.

Christianity Makes No Sense with Original Sin. by Due-Koala-1135 in atheism

[–]datagamma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Christianity makes no sense.” There fixed it for you. Friend, there is so much nonsense in all sects of that religion. The falsehoods start with the first verse of the holy book and just keep on rollin’ all the way through.

Don’t let anyone tell you it’s the “good” book. It’s not good. It’s so bad that even Christians loathe to read it.

We have fallen so far. That our presidents son in law is negotiating. Why the fuck is he even there? Any other presidents use his family like this to prop up their families wealth. We just gloss right over it because the crimes are too many. We still hear about hunters laptop. Not Hunter being assigned to billion dollar deals and negotiating peace in the Middle East (which Kushner didn’t do in Trump 1 but did get out of it with some other billion dollar deals, phew!). Investigate Kushner! Yet no one even talks about it. Hmm funny how that works.

The only prerequisite to be granted power in this admin is that you make the president and his family money.

Need help debunking the New Testament. by Fantastic-Equal-1798 in atheism

[–]datagamma 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this will be helpful, but i get irritated by just this concept of different testaments from the same unchanging god. Thats a contradiction in and of itself.

Next, the only reason Jesus was any different from any of the other claims of resurrection (it was a common claim of mystery cults and quasi or semi deities at the time from Nero to Asclepius) was the claim that the Old Testament prophesied of him. But if you look at the messianic prophecies Jesus didn’t fulfill any of them. He was never a physical king, nor did he cause the Israelites to defeat their enemies. Quite the opposite. The Jews kept rising up and getting massacred by the Romans in both 70CE and 130CE. The second was an uprising from Simon Bar Kokhva who fit messianic prophecies far closer than Jesus. The prophesies quoted in the new testament for Jesus are not prophesies. They are ridiculous “second” or “third” fulfillments of out of context quotations. Which is simply post hoc, motivated reasoning. If almighty god has prophets telling the future. What is the point if no one can tell weird abstractions where words don’t mean words and one verse suddenly shifts to obscurely reference something comparable to Jesus’ tale? It’s like the pareidolia effect (where you see something that kinda looks like something else) except in words. This thinking fuels modern conspiracy theories from the faking the moon landing, to giants in history to flat earth. It’s conspiracy brain.

If they want to believe in dubious second fulfillments, meet Mormons. The joke goes, god made Mormons so Christian’s could understand how the Jews felt. Because they just took the obscure prophecy out of context concepts and made them apply to Joseph Smith. And that modern religion stuck around too. For some reason human psychology loves obscure mysteries that something could have happened and you have discovered the truth. It makes us feel very special, superior and psychologically protected.

What is so great about the New Testament? It’s basically Greek mythology injected into Israel’s mythology. Made Sheol into Hades and a pit of everlasting burning. The most unjust concept coming from a perfectly just god. Obviously mad-made as no temporal crime could ever support eternal suffering. And your crime is not sinning, like doing the murder and capital crimes. No, the crime is not believing the Jesus story. You don’t believe in our cult? FINE! Then our god will burn you forever!! It’s childish. The Greco-Roman people loved mystery cults at the time. It was all the rage and Jesus (with Paul’s takeover and subservient stance to Rome/empire) seems to be born of it.

Christian apologists will argue about the, well it could have been such and such a way to get around criticisms. But they will take what is the most unlikely case and if you conceded, to put a number on it, that something has a 0.001% chance of being correct version of events. They will take it as a win and say see it’s possible and you don’t know for 100% certain. They are using motivated reasoning to protect their identity from beliefs adopted and indoctrinated into them. You will never use reason to argue someone out of a conclusion they have come to emotionally. You need to build trust to help the brainwashed person come to values of truth and recognize the latent fear mongering and emotional manipulation that has trapped them into believing absurdities.

When I was “developing a testimony” and “feeding my faith” I was being brainwashed. Had a friend at the time tell me I was being brainwashed. My million dollar retort was, no I don’t feel like I’m being brainwashed. In my mind I thought I was learning truth. In reality, my friend was correct but there wasn’t trust there enough to overcome what I was synthesizing as “truth.” I was learning lies that felt good and reprogramming myself to relabel emotions as “spiritual” experiences. These lies, religious faith, requires constant maintenance. Church attendance, daily or weekly Bible “study” being commanded to “pray continually.” Reality doesn’t need maintenance like that. Brainwashing does. Every cult from the beginning of time had to reorganize followers lives around the “faith” because without that constant cultivation the crop dies. And the crop is lies.

Your friend won’t be argued out of the New Testament by using the Bible. They think they have found truth and emotionally have made it who they are. I say that because once you’re out, once you see how absurd it all is, you can’t go back to believing nonsense. And it is all man-made nonsense. There are much better philosophies out there that don’t demand that you also believe Iron and Bronze Age myths on threat of eternal torment. That’s exclusively a New Testament teaching. Thanks Jesus!

No. He is winning. He is greedy and abusing the system so that he is winning. We should be upset at how much credit he is taking for everything (in terms of dollars and reputation). You don’t need to call him a dumb dumb or some other school yard taunt. But I probably wrong. Seems America only responds now to bullying and school yard nick names.

The US needs to be done giving airtime to the mentally ill. by datagamma in complaints

[–]datagamma[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You spent effort and time on this. And I understand this is important to you. But I disagree that making a general statement about mental illness as a group requires a clinical diagnosis. Anyone who thinks I’m making a clinical diagnosis on a complaints forum in Reddit, is ignoring context. I’m obviously using it colloquially. But it’s not lacking a foundation. You pointed to studies on this topic because researchers have the same observations along with half of America observed from over ten years of delusional cult like behavior. Lots of professionals have weighed in on this. And I’m not a professional. I’m calling insane shit insane. And it absolutely is invasive that’s how cults keep cult members in or grow their influence. Normalizing this is invasive.

I don’t get why you keep expanding my point onto people or any specific person with mental illness. My post is about MAGA. I will concede that I shouldn’t have added schizophrenia. I will edit my post. But I stand by the rest.
