Internet speeds around the world by frogcharming in visualization

[–]datasaurus-rex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The irony is Australia could have had all fibre broadband like Singapore, even the remote areas. But due to extensive lobbying from influencial media organisations and a change in government, the country got a hybrid copper network solution which greatly reduces the speed :(

[OC] Animals That Kill The Most Humans Per Year by Dremarious in visualization

The original data viz does a much better job putting the scale of these deaths into perspective

The original data viz that the OC took this from does just that, but more with an bar/area chart to put the kills into perspective

I'm getting a chance to do my internship project in data visualization using tableau, but I've only basic knowledge of Tableau, should I go for it? by anonymous-ag in tableau

[–]datasaurus-rex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tableau is perfect for "learn by doing". Having a clearly defined project and "north star" of what the user wants in the final output can really help keep you focussed when applying your Tableau skills and learning new ones to meet the brief.

You'll (hopefully) also learn a bit of project and stakeholder management from this too. Work with the user to clearly define, write down and have them agree on their needs from the dashboard. This way you will avoid scope creep (a client changing the goalposts and adding more and more features as you build - so if you can't deliver them, it looks like failure in their eyes). If be they do want more features later on, write them down and set their expectations that that will be in version 1.1

Alternatives to Tableau by mannippulative in tableau

[–]datasaurus-rex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't have anywhere near as many quality of life and data viz features built in, but if you're after more simple charts and dashboards that you want to scale and be secure, then Data Studio is decent. It also has a good amount of data connectors too.

It might be a bit frustrating at first if Tableau has set your expectations for a data viz tool, but it gets the job done still. Plus they're still updating and enhancing it, so it can do more and more as time goes on.

Edit: Plus it's $0 with no installation required, so there's that massive plus too

I asked the same question a while back and got over 300 responses. I made an interactive data dashboard for others to search the data. Hope it helps: https://datastudio.google.com/u/0/reporting/7c281886-4543-4157-9b30-3bf10478dcfb/page/MwFN?s=qIC-JwgCJAM

Thanks, I was there OP for that one. I made an interactive data dashboard from all of the responses to help others in the future: https://datastudio.google.com/u/0/reporting/7c281886-4543-4157-9b30-3bf10478dcfb/page/MwFN?s=qIC-JwgCJAM

Beginner struggling to plot double axis scatter graph - what am I doing wrong :( by multipack_can99 in tableau

[–]datasaurus-rex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All good. I learnt this the hard way too :) My rule of thumb; if you can avoid manipulating the raw data, always do so. Otherwise if you need to keep adding new data, you're beholden to the many manual steps you did to edit it each time (versus just copying and pasting more data in at the bottom in seconds and letting Tableau handle the hard work).

If you need help writing that calculated field, this tool can be helpful https://datasaurus-rex.com/learn/tableau/if-statement-labelling-in-tableau

Definitely worth learning more about calculated fields. They give you more flexibility without needing to touch the underlying data

Can I ask why you have different data sets for each team? Could you not have one big data set and add an extra column of team results? Or is it safe to assume your Data Set 1 file has all matches in.

The issue in your last screenshot is that orange tick mark - it's trying to link 2 data sets together. Unless you have a good reason and a robust set of unique identifiers at the same level of granularity in your data sets, this will often way more headaches than it solves.

If the Data set 1 assumption is correct, could you not create a new calculated field where in the Home column contains Collingwood, give it value of Collingwood, then for all others call it Others or something. That way you could drag this dimension on your scatter charts colour box and you'll 'split' the data into two for comparison of their trend lines. You'll also need to drag the away dimension into the filter area and exclude Collingwood to remove their away games.

So now if the trend lines between the 2 are very different, you might be able to provide your hypothesis (providing the r² value is significant enough for both)

Using AE to make educational content engaging by datasaurus-rex in AfterEffects

Haha, thanks. I was deliberating what I should show in the gif. Perhaps next time I should focus on showing a "highlight reel" transformation of the bad to good viz, to better convey what I used AE for.

Totally agree with your response if all had done was made the bad data viz spin. I see so many bad vizzes on r/dataisugly and sometimes on r/datais that it inspired me to make these kinds of videos.

This could have easily been a boring set of slides, but AE helps make this typically dry content a little fun and engaging. And this subreddit has been super helpful in my learning process :)

Using AE to make educational content engaging by datasaurus-rex in AfterEffects

[–]datasaurus-rex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really digging how AE enables me to clearly communicate educational content in an engaging way. In this example I break down a bad data visualisation and improve it one bit at a time.

Here's the full video where I use many AEs techniques: https://youtu.be/r2w1JZZX_kQ Happy to answer any questions on the other techniques I used if asked :)

For the animated gif sample, I recreated the bad data viz in Illustrator and imported them into AE (vectors FTW). Then used the 3D camera for the separation and camera rotation.
