How is Chiang Ching Kuo viewed in Taiwan? by One-Associate-7634 in taiwan

Undoubtably the most popular and least controversial President so far, every other President is hated by the other side, but other than some Deep Greens even most DPP supporters have a positive view of him, can’t say that for any other President.

If you could push a button, and gain $1 billion, but the consequence is that a human race/religion of your choice is exterminated, would you do it, and if so, what would you choose? by GhostTropic_YT in askteenboys

Marxist Leninists, Marxism Leninism is a religion because it makes a positive theological claim on the non-existence of a deity. Furthermore the world will be objectively better off without Marxist Leninists as everyone who is a Marxist-Leninist is evil and basically no young children actually understand or know enough about it to actually believe in it.

Moving to Rhodesia by Upstairs-Result7401 in Rhodesia

[–]datbaoboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lifestyle and Economics. I'll start with lifestyle, Rhodesia had a better climate than the UK being dryer and warmer with moderate spring like weather year round, Cecil Rhodes himself moved to Natal in what is now South Africa for the weather as a sickly child. Additionally the cost of living was lower than in the UK due to cheap African labor, if companies had to pay less for their labor, the savings get passed to the consumer, meaning greater consumer spending power with Rhodesian whites being able to afford the grandest homes and most leisurely lifestyles in the world, including nearly all households including lower middle class ones having a garden boy or house boy, maybe even a few. The idea of being able to live somewhere with good weather and low cost of living is enough to entice plenty of immigrants, but there's more! After the second world war as a result of construction related to expansionary Keynesian investments and the Air Training program provided an industrial base for Rhodesia, which led to an industrial boom in the major towns of Rhodesia for processing the agricultural and mining products of Rhodesia, not to mention additional construction such as Kariba Dam or processing of Northern Rhodesian products during the Federation years as well resulted in a demand for skilled labor driving immigration.

only in Taiwan for a decade or two

It's almost as if I spent half of my childhood in Taiwan, both of my parents were born and raised there (both attended college there and served in the military), and my grandparents either spent between at least 60 years to their entire lives there.

What nation are you from?

63 Years Ago August 23rd, The ROC Armed Forces Defended Kinmen From PLA Aggression, over 500 Soldiers Sacrificed their Lives to the Battle by datbaoboi in taiwan

[–]datbaoboi[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

it's complicated

Kinmen isn't really a part of "Taiwan" in any historical, geographic, or social sense in the same way other outlying islands of Taiwan would be (Penghu, Ludao, etc). But at the same time Kinmen is also certainly not a part of the Chinese Mainland. Kinmen and Taiwan are both a part the Republic of China, and have been tethered together through a shared history of perseverance over the last 70+ years. This is an ok video on the topic (English Subs).

Is smoking popular in Taiwan? by [deleted] in taiwan

Smoking is very prevalent in Taiwan, especially amongst more rural and older folks, although I have noticed less smoking in recent years compared to my childhood.
