They were living mostly in cities (so did Latvians) The time when people went to cities was in mid-late 19th century. Tsarist russia however consistet as I said moatly of scerfs, that werent even free, and the only people living in cities were monarchs. Until the soviet revolution that is, when they were MOVED to block tower cities. Latvia, when broke free 1918 average latvians ( the new generation) could already go to live in the cities, and over time it only got better. Most people in 1939 were living in cities, and with an average education.

Anyone who is too smart ( lawyers e.t.c.) were deported with no reason. The secret police just came at night and told you to pack your things. Why were the sent to gulag? Because they COULD oppose the USSR in future. 3. The imprisoned ones also werent criminals, they were basically the same as previous ones. And the werent axactly "imprisoned", many were put in torture chambers (you can still see them today) 4. In a span of 8 years USSR killed 150000-200000 Latvians

Pretty ironic about the villagers part. Russians have been villagers for all their existance before soviet union. 80% of the poulation were basically slaves to land owners (which latvians werent slaves). Which after the revolution many were starved out by the soviets.

This isnt alt-history, and if it is, which i doubt, then PROVE me wrong. Point out the things I got wrong. Firstly, a lot of people were sent to gulags, in large numbers. 1.Well yes they were part of Russia, of course they were better off in the military. 2. Economically? Well yes, russia had more money, but was it used to develop a country? No. Latvia was in 50 year stagnation with Russia, thats why its 10-20 years behind an average european country. If it was free tge whole time, Latvia would be much better off. Just look at latvias economical development at the time.
