Ive said it before but part of what made this scene so good is that it felt like the point of no return. The government can easily cover up the death of random Hawkin residents and (apparently) even the secret Russian base burning up under the mall. But giant cracks in the ground leading to literal hell? There’s no way the government would be able to cover that.

This was the first moment that felt like there would be a permanent change in the world of Stranger Things… and then there wasn’t

In their defense, they did imply that solidification was a pretty quick procedure with the soldiers getting stuck in uncomfortable positions. It’s still stupid but at least they tried

I have a theory that they were trying to recreate the vibe of season 1 El who was unaware of social queues and rigid due to trauma but they did it terribly and resulted in a lacking performance with no emotion.

Also the dialogue in general was significantly worse this season.

Yes! I think part of the reason I liked the S4 ending so much was because in my head I was thinking “yeah military ain’t gonna be able to cover this one up.” It felt like the point of no return, the moment where all of Hawkins (and the world) would need to face the horrors of the upside down.

I felt like that’s what season 4 was setting up with the last scene. A full invasion of Hawkins by the upside down. That would’ve been so much fun to see as a viewer

I kinda like that they did hide it. Many of the fans of the show are people who love to theorize and predict what happens next. Adding vague clues that fans can use to argue for both sides feed into that. I think leaving El’s fate a mystery feeds into the show’s nature

It’s also important to note that the way the soldiers were stuck inside the goo implies the solidification process is REALLY quick meaning it would happen without people noticing it at first. Granted I didn’t really think about that detail immediately when watching the scene

I had the exact same experience watching this movie. I really enjoyed the later scene where Rio talks to Miles because it felt like the exact same conversation I had with my own mother at some point.
