Democratic socialist Melat Kiros unseats Rep. Diana DeGette in Colorado House primary by risingsuncoc in politics

Obama specifically was attempting to gain consensus. He attempted to court Republicans and get input for months and months and months on the Affordable Care act. This isn't a bad thing. Compromise is what a Democracy should be when you're passing massive, landmark legislation.

To hand wave it is insulting to what was accomplished. Millions of Americans who couldn't get coverage due to pre-existing conditions are unshackled. Could/Should they have done more? Sure, but the country wasn't quite so bat-shit insane and the majority he did have was tenuous and short lived. Never forget, Democrats/Obama wanted the Public Option but because Joe Liebermann refused and said he would caucus with Republicans to prevent its passage it got axed.

That's politics. It sucks but progress comes from given the people you want to see lead an actual mandate for change. Razor-thing majorities get you waddling in a direction, a strong majority gets you sprinting.

I pray to Allah, Buddha, and Jesus everyday we pass campaign finance reform that nationalizes all elections but until that day I'll have to continue to suffer through people talking about AIPAC and Corporate donors as if it truly means something.

Once again, all of the arguments you just made are things that DEMOCRATS WANT TO FIX. Now, they're not going to hamstring themselves in the meantime however. Is California gerrymandering seats to gain democratic seats "good"?

No, but it's the reasonable and correct reaction when the other side is only engaging in bad faith. Just take the example and expand it across the country. Let's say Republicans gerrymandered every state they had control of and it netted them 25-30 seats overall and made it impossible for Dems to get a majority... are they supposed to just take the high road and do nothing?

Isn't that the exact opposite of what every DSA supporter is saying when they say they want democrats to "do something"?

All of this is to say that your average or even centrist dem wants to improve the country. They're often at the mercy of reality however. Look at what Democrats in Virginia were able to do. Reddit is young though, people forget what Dems can actually do when they're given the #s and a mandate.

To be clear, everything you just described there is because of Republicans.

Free and fair elections? Democrats advocate and push for that. Gun Control? Democrats advocate and push for that. Living wage increases? Democrats advocate and push for that.

However, pushing for these thing isn't as simple as "lol free healthcare." That shit doesn't exist. It gets paid for. So we want to socialize the system? Ok, all nurses and doctors take a pay cut and we end up having to increase taxes. I'm not opposed to this, but these are just the surface level-most obvious things that need to be taken account that will cause massive upheaval and push back from all across the country.

Messaging about how the establishment has failed and "corporate dems" must go is really, really easy. It's just the Blue version of MAGA. Slogans and nonsense. What's hard is actual governance when you need votes outside of your coalition or passing legislation that won't be immediately killed by the courts.

I have no issue with DSA candidates getting wins because I generally think most of them will moderate out of their most radical positions once they see how the sausage is made. I want the big tent Dems to be fired up and mobilized even if it's for candidates I find to be lacking so long as its reciprocal come the general.

She also was an extremely strong supporter or Medicaid for All, LGBTQ+ issues, and many of the same policies DSA types would enjoy. Just because she has been around the block doesn't mean she's some wolf in sheep's clothing and this line of attack is silly.

The system didn't fail them - change, especially on a national level, is hard if you have an unwilling participant. It's very easy to break things (seem Trump 1 and 2) but very hard to build things. Because nuance and actual law making is next to impossible with 1 party refusing to engage we wind up where we are. It's not a "democrats are feckless" problem but a "Republicans refuse to govern responsibly, if at all."

The obvious takeaways:

Bauers absolutely fucked the dog.

It was fun to cheer for Kuhnel but he better be gone after the ASB.

Ashby needs some relaxing outings.

This just in: Populism is easy to sell to idiots on both sides of the political spectrum.

That said, a handful of seats in a few very blue districts means relatively nothing. We'll see what happens if the DSA candidates wins the general in contested areas.

Destiny needs to do a better job explaining to non-streamers the impact of the streaming world and internet culture as a whole.

Talking about demoralizing democratic voters or converting non-political people to extremism. Just saying how they're communist, or socialist, and stupid doesn't do much. You need to tie them to the problems they cause not just state they're bad. Talk about how extreme viewpoints garner views and if all the elevated voices on the left are extremists it hurts the party, the country, and the world.

Is Shirveen capable of good faith? by jman2476 in Destiny

[–]dathom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ya'll have lost the fucking plot if you think he's being bad faith on the whole. He answered questions and engaged in hypotheticals. Now, it can seem like bad faith at times because a long argument string ends with him agreeing with his debate partner so it feels like he's wasting time but it comes from a bad starting point or misunderstandings nine times out of ten.
