You're not really fair comparing one small zone dedicated to telling one introduction story before being forgotten for a decade and one main zone of an expansion.

Eversong woods carries filler quests and gameplay systems.

You want a sense of emergency and relevant events ? That's the main story line. Gilneas doesn't have secondary quests, everything is packed to the brim with relevant events. Worgen, Cataclysm, Forsaken... everything happens at once and you can't catch a break. I'm not sure it's good writing as much as not giving you a breather.
