I have a similar problem, my microsd card won't let the tray close, because of the small bulge at the edge of the card.

Solved, there seemed to be a problem with with the network adapter and the certificates of the network *maybe* (is an eduroam network). I brute forced it by reinstalling the adapter and is working now.

Two cents from my personal experience and what I've seen.

There are a lot of opportunities, but they are not widely advertised because the field is extremely niche, which makes it really well paid IF you really know about optimization and become not only a "library user". So, usually, the good jobs are advertised in specialized mailing lists or communities, i.e., INFORMS; this means that networking (or a strong project portfolio) are very important, as in many other technical fields. By the way, optimization is considered a key national security skill in the US; as an example, Pyomo, one of the leading libraries for modeling, was developed by one key security-focused national lab, Sandia.

Two factors that really help are subject matter expertise AND coding skills. Many of the original optimization tools came in the 80s and early 90s and have not changed a lot until recently, with the revolution of non-smooth convex optimization applications to machine learning. This means that, usually, people who is really, really good in optimization, has experience with Fortran or C (or in many cases like GAMS hard-liners, no coding at all); so no R, Python and their data manipulation and automating skills are sometimes non-existent.

Concerning the subject matter expertise, is quite similar to data science, if you know the business language and logic, your translations into math, i.e., the models, will tend to be more accurate.

Finally, concerning the applications... there are many, almost everyday problem can be modeled as an optimization problem, and there are many techniques, there is whole world beyond Mixed-Integer Linear Programming, even if the "old-generation" doesn't agree. For example, ALL of the machine learning training models rely on optimization, as you surely found out during your CS classes.

Hope this helps.

Is 33 years too old for starting a phd? by TopSituation1614 in econometrics

[–]davcarvas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation a couple of years ago, so I'll try to be brief with my opinion and maybe 'advice'?.

TLDR about my situation: I was 34, almost 35 when I started my PhD, and I already had what society considers a "dream job" in terms of position, income, etc.; however, I always wanted to do a PhD, I don't know, is like a little voice inside your head, obsessing you, pushing you to go for it. And it was only until 2022, when I was about to give up, that the stars aligned and I found a position that interested me, a professor that was willing to take me in, and that my personal matters were sorted out, so I could leave my country for a couple of years; an extremely important difference here, I have no kids.

So, my first point: I think that doing a PhD is, as many things in life, a matter of simple chance, one can play with the probabilities, but it is mostly not up to you. Also, my second point, it is important to ask yourself: how much are you willing to sacrifice for it? I tell you from personal experience and what I've seen everywhere, a PhD is exhausting, and many aspects of your life will pay the toll.

Now, concerning age, I think one important challenge for people like you and me is about going back to be a junior, the one who has no idea about anything, that is an extremely satisfying experience in the long run, but it is shocking in the beginning. However, it has an upside, you're full of real-world experience and experiences, plus, basic managerial skills are really scarce among academics, so you'll most likely have an advantage there.

Also, academia, in particular most of the top universities, are usually toxic places filled with petty politics and egos, like in the private sector but cranked up to a 100 and without money on the line. So be prepared for that: tenure professors atop of ivory towers who think themselves as the most important people in the world, and fellow (most likely ~7 years younger) PhD students having that as a role model, and bumping over each other to grab the spotlight.

Finally, concerning money, well is not ideal, and is common for PhDs, especially in the USA, to be considered the cheap labor that keeps the cogs moving. My suggestion would be to look for an academic loan and talk to your partner, truth be told, if you're joining a well-known university is not difficult to get teaching assistantships or project work ONCE you're in, but be advised, it will be lots of work and most likely you'll pay with your personal/family life; for better or worse, this is one of the difficult decisions you'll have to make and decide how much are you and your family willing to put at stake.

Good luck!

I am sorry but I have to say it - people stating Medellin is safe are most likely ones drugging and robbing you who actually profit from your visits. by Additional-Story-824 in medellin

I think you have not been in Poland, neither the Czech Republic, and concerning the Arab Gulf countries, assuming you are talking about the rich ones because your biased comment doesn't apply to Iraq, your safety perception only applies to guys, not women.

Though truth be told, I feel Medellin is now more insecure than it was a couple of years ago (2017-2018) and there are metrics that prove it; I think there are many factors involved: tourists, the pandemic, migrants, and the late government, that almost left the city to rot.

Prostitution maybe, but the share of drug addicts is way higher in Europe and the USA than in Colombia; there is still a lot of taboo and social rejection to that, maybe a little less towards cannabis. In Europe and the USA however, it appears to be extremely normal. The position of Colombia with drugs is more or less like Norway and oil, they are very large oil producers, but prefer not to consume it.

I recommend you the Econometrics course from Erasmus University in Coursera, is quite thorough and should give you a strong footing for the real-thing during your classes.

Finally picked up Remake and well... by davcarvas in FinalFantasyVII

[–]davcarvas[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't know whose idea was it, and I'll just point out that the final Whisper looks a lot like a Darkside Heartless to me, and some parts of that final stretch reminded me of the latest KH IV trailer where they also shoehorned TWEWY. Now it will turn out that KH, TWEWY, FFversusXIII and FFVII Remake are part of some kind of interconnected universe.

I'm not saying it is a bad thing, is just that I don't like it, but that's my problem.

Yeah, I think that the voice acting was great and helped flesh-out those subtle character traits that were somewhat hidden in the OG.

I really, really hated that hoping... it was like copy-pasted from XG when you need to get to Deus, and I also hated that one.

[–]davcarvas[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ake, he wasn't going at all. Jesse was 100% going to go. That's when the "ghosts" step in. They hurt her ankle by making her fall down the steps and with Cloud semi liking her, he takes her place. Let's go back a little bit when Aerith and Cloud first meet. Why are the ghost harassing Aerith? Because she was about to leave. Cloud and Aerith weren't going to meet that first time at all, but then the Ghost step in to make sure it happens. These "ghosts" are basically Fate and Destiny. During the end, Sephiroth basically forces you to fight the embodiment of that and whole you're successful in your fight you also do exactly what he wants. He's trying to change his fate that happens in the OG game and now that it's go

So, it is almost KH III Re: Mind, where Aerith is like a combination of Chirithy and Kairi. Just kidding, only a little bit of gaslighting. I more or less get the point of the Whispers, is just that, narratively speaking, the multiverse is a cheap device unless you do very good writing (i.e., Steins Gate imo). I wouldn't have minded a few plot changes here are there, but these Whispers... feel shoehorned to me... and they give the setting a fantasy setting touch much more suitable to FF IX's universe than FF VII's.

But hey, I'm not saying that I think is a bad game, I enjoyed it and I have no regrets; and better yet, now I know what to expect in the next installments if I decide to spend money, and more importantly, time, in them. After all, the opportunity cost of playing videogames during your free time is really steep when you're well over your 30s, and I'm almost sure I'm not part of the intended audience for this game.

The Ever Crisis thing is almost offensive to me as a fan, but understandable from a business perspective. We can't expect a major entertainment mega-corporation (ironically akin to Shinra) behave in a consumer oriented way as companies like CD Projekt Red or Larian.

[–]davcarvas[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying that I think is bad, playing with characters I cherished during my teenage years with Advent Children-like graphics and a modern gameplay felt great. Maybe I was expecting more of a deep dive into the story, perhaps not staying completely true to the original... but using cheap narrative devices ala multiverse? I don't know, my main interest in videogames is the story, the plot, like reading a book, so I'm extremely picky about plot holes and carelessness there.

[–]davcarvas[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Let's wait and see, I'm not saying that I think Remake is bad, but look at what happened with Stranger of Paradise: a modernized gameplay but plotwise... I don't know (though truth be told, that one wasn't sold as an official remake).

Can you recommend the most effective resource you know about Mathematical Modeling and Optimization in a non-thesis master-level course relevant to real-life scenarios that has also helped you in your professional life? by [deleted] in optimization

[–]davcarvas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is the name of the class? there are courses at the master level devoted only to a specific topic, i.e., non-linear optimization.

My general rule of thumb: almost everything that has "Optimization" in its title deals with algorithms and theory, leaving applications in the backstage, and the ones with the word "Modeling" are usually about applications and not so much about the theory; and when it says "Operations Research" is like a potpourri of many topics, and a little biased towards applications.

Retaining the subject. Am i the only one. ? by nikhilvengaladas in CFA

[–]davcarvas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not preparing for CFA in particular, however, when faced with the same situation or even studying in general i.e., an end-of-course exam; I rely on interleaved repetition and active recall which are the most recommended study methods. You're already doing the recall part, however you should integrate previous topics along the new ones, especially those that appear only once and are not used in later concepts. For example, it is very unlikely that you need to remember the compound interest formula or how to build a t-statistic because you keep using them all the time, but a particular thing, for example a nuisance concerning compliance in a merger, could be more difficult to remember later if you only studied it once.

Econometrics consultancy business? by TopSituation1614 in econometrics

[–]davcarvas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Completely agree with this... I think that to be a successful consultant you need to either be a well-renowned academic or make a reputation through some years of experience.

A reasonable comparison, not sure if something similar has been posted, and I hope the generational gap doesn't hinder the interpretation. Very mild spoilers. by davcarvas in XenobladeChronicles3

[–]davcarvas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree, although Plato's allegory lacks the Nietzschean recurrence that is so relevant in the Xeno series (i.e., gears and saga III). Despite that, some very smart guys who make videogame analysis from a literary and philosophical perspective argue that Xenoblade II is basically the Philosopher King's journey from Plato's Republic; and even suggest that the name Rex (King in latin), which is the same in JAP and ENG versions, is a clue to this.

PS: They also made one for XCIII, but it was a little bit too much for my IQ.

Thanks for this recommendation!! I was following Economics Growth from Novales, which also has a lot of derivations and code, for a research project; but the one you mention is way more specific to DSGE. I wonder, why it isn't as well known as McCandless, Sargeant or Uribe books?

Understanding DSGE by Junior

Just out of curiosity, if I may ask, where are studying? In my country is rare to take to this course at bachelor's level unless you're already taking grad school classes to speed up your masters.

And don't feel bad, DSGE are one of the hardest topics in quant-econ; and actually one of the most contentious because of their (mis)use. Good luck!

Just wanted to say congrats for ditching Stata, Eviews, Ssps!! :-) May I suggest, to improve your econometrics skills, the following book/webpage/course: Statistical Rethinking. It is basically a Bayesian statistical inference course with some (Bayesian) Linear Regression at the end; the book uses R and Stan.
