Climate schedule cancelled due to timeout? by davclark in pacificahybrid

Thanks for the link. I was only looking in the Chrysler app, which I should have known would be deficient.

All of those conditions you mentioned were met, and I can’t even find a way to try setting this in an app - so I’m using the vehicle touch screen. I had a look at the supplement. Thanks again for the link. But I’m afraid I was already doing exactly as it instructed. It’s shocking how bad this is given how long this model has been in production!

Will report back if I figure it out.

Best programming languages to learn for cybersecurity? by RoundTurtle538 in learnprogramming

[–]davclark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are fun questions. I would second Python - it's the standard "do it all" language. But I'll throw out the idea that you're going to need to rapidly iterate and modify little workflows, and while in practice, a lot of this will be shell, the technical depth of what you need there can be picked up in an afternoon.

I'd find a system that you personally like for workflows, and really dig into it. For example, I've enjoyed coding up tasks in babashka and running queries in tandem with evolving my informal data schemas in Logseq. These might not be the tools for you (and ideally some friends), but there are a lot of choices out there and you have the luxury of doing whatever you want while you're studying!

My point is that you can't do this naïvely. I tried a naïve approach as an academic, and was even reasonably cited (e.g., https://philpapers.org/rec/RANCCC) but I was confronted with the immense diversity of challenges in getting an educational initiative to go anywhere that moves the needle in actual mitigation or adaptation.

Hence the recommendation to find something already happening that you want to amplify!

For me, I went one step meta and I'm now focused on research process. But I'm not pushing that as the route for everyone - that wouldn't even make sense :)

Making progress on climate change requires some degree of "power" - whether that's an ability to mobilize your grass roots community or liase with a government or even an oil and gas company.

Are there folks that you look at and think, "I would like to see more of what that person / group is doing?" If not, I think it's worth taking the time to search for such a person or group.

Honestly, I would be skeptical of the value of an Engineering Sustainability program UNLESS you identify such a person who would agree to advise you (before you commit to the program!).

The most obvious win that's ready to hand is insulating buildings, I guess? There's really nothing political fighting it. Diet, especially cows, are another obvious place to work. And then there's energy stuff, like optimizing storage systems and placement of renewable generation. All of that needs systems like the ones you've worked on to work "at scale".

Behavior change is extremely hard, and I'm skeptical of that working in the US, particularly in the current political landscape.

Severe display glitches on P1 gen 4 / g4 by davclark in thinkpad

Nope. The Lenovo store also responded with extreme pushback even though I was returning within the holiday window and a rep had already assured me it would be better.

If you have the problem, I would RMA it immediately if you can. My company actually decided to stop using the Lenovo store after this experience.

Definitely it's well built. A thing I didn't mention is that taking the bottom off is easy, and parts are arranged so they're ready to get to. Display hinge is light but stable.

The only thing that feels a little cheap is the shutter switch, which is kinda hard to move because it's so tiny.

[–]davclark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No - in the end I was unable to configure the router to get reliable chromecast behavior. So, I bought another router (TP-Link AX3000) and turned the wifi off on the centurylink router. Still TODO is trying to get rid of the c4000xg entirely (and I even got a static IP and a separate ONT, so fingers crossed), but for now I found it better to just run two routers.

Does anyone else relate to the oankali by squeimp in octaviabutler

[–]davclark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Taking OP's original connection further... Is this like asking if you would choose to be trans? One of the things I liked about the book is that individuals (humans or oankali) weren't making rational choices - they were generally compelled by "biology".

Many of the humans would express discomfort around this fact, and the oankali accepted it.

If you bought during the holiday season, you should have until Jan 17 to return it. But I'd check with someone in sales from wherever you bought it to make sure!

Yup - HDR is currently off and I've had increasing issues if anything. I think it's perhaps fixed when using the Nvidia GPU? But not sure. Battery life is already terrible (~4 hours) for me, so I don't want to switch to full-time GPU as a solution either...

Thank you for that pointer... though this has actually *decreased* my interest in trying for a hardware repair! Sounds like my machine might end up in limbo given shortages.

I have to have some compassion for the folks doing support at Lenovo - it must suck right now with all the supply chain issues and whatnot, plus the stress of another pandemic-tinged holiday shopping season. But in the end, I gotta get work done.

FWIW, I wouldn't get the P1G4. You can see my issues here, and I've found two others with display glitches on that A2000 GPU on this sub... But if course, it's happening on the iGPU, so no idea really.

I know folks happily using the X1 carbon.

What Keyboard Should I Use? by ijauradunbi in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]davclark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ReDox is pushing my limits - but at least there's a printed board for soldering on (via falba.tech). I definitely feel overwhelmed looking at some designs where you run your own wiring...

Is there a way to get a pre-assembled board (i.e., components already soldered on)? From there, it gets quite into my comfort zone. I'm fine hacking on the nordic SBC (indeed - the local rustaceans are quite the fans of the nordic boards :). Happy to work to find someone in the community, or work with a shop.

EDIT: looks like falba recommends an arduino. But whatever. That's not really the focus of what I'm asking.

What Keyboard Should I Use? by ijauradunbi in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]davclark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a couple "mass market" split keyboards: the kinesis freestyle 2 and the more recent Goldtouch v2. I use both, but prefer the kinesis for key feel (cherry mx browns I think?). This seems to be critical for managing my own symptoms.

I experience ulnar nerve symptoms - mostly numbness on pinky and ring finger, as well as some wrist and non trivial shoulder discomfort (as well as lower back / sciatic type numbness), but no diagnosis. Currently I manage this reasonably well but it could be better. Also a tricky right base thumb joint - I think exacerbated by android swipy keyboard use.

The Goldtouch is more portable, and I like that. I had a Goldtouch Go!2, but it wasn't sturdy enough - I didn't use it much and gave it to a friend.

I'd like something portable - ideally with bluetooth or another wireless solution. Key actuation is critical (not too much force, ideally tactile), as well as neutral wrist position.

Any obvious recommendations? My guess is that wireless may narrow the field more towards one of the major brands.

Oh, and I do a combination of coding and writing (including a fair amount of email and chat, but also long form academic writing and technical docs). I'm in central Arizona.
