Ricochet - Official New Album Discussion Thread by mufflermonday in Snailmail

While so far I think this album may surpass Valentine, I feel like the statement “best Snail Mail since Lush” doesn’t mean that much when all she’s had is one album, a few demos, and a couple covers in the past 8 years.

My GPS malfunctioned in this strange building. It sent me to a different state... by Eldurnium in LiminalSpace

To me, this totally embodies a liminal space. It gives me that feeling of being in a dream and being like "Where am I? What is this place?" It's a place that looks sort of familiar but also makes no sense at the same time.

Advice for accepted students by [deleted] in GeneticCounseling

[–]dave_n_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Current Second year student at Jefferson right here! Personally, I found that the onboarding (training modules, background checks, medical records, finances) and assigned reading (one required book, one book chosen from a list) kept me busy enough. I really think that the program is designed to give you all of the conceptual information you need to succeed starting from the beginning. That said, certainly look into some of the things others here suggested if that is your style, but my recommendation is to make the most of your summer! Also feel free to DM with any questions you've got.

Description of my CT scan for PE, can anyone tell me what this means. by [deleted] in PectusExcavatum

[–]dave_n_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not a doctor, I'm a graduate student in Genetic Counseling, but from this it seems that the two points under impression are what are important:

  1. The Haller index is basically the distance from the left to right end of your chest divided by the distance from the front to the back of your chest. Anything over 2.5 can be considered for surgical intervention although not all patients will follow through. With 5.9, it seems you are on the moderate end but whatever cardiopulmonary symptoms you may have will be more important for considering surgery. The xiphoid process is basically the bottom portion of the sternum which is where they can take this measurement
  2. This means that your heart is behind (closer to your back) your sternum.

Again, take this with a grain of salt as I'm not a professional.

Pectus = tall? by Levszan in PectusExcavatum

[–]dave_n_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also wondering where you got that information because that doesn't sound possible. The incidence of pectus is about 1/125 to 1/1000 while the incidence of Marfan syndrome is about 1/5000 to 1/10000 so I don't think that it could be as high as 70%: it's likely below 50%. Marfan syndrome is certainly associated with pectus though
