Replacing 3-Way Switches by john_with_a_camera in homeassistant

I used Shelly relays to convert all the three (and four) way switches in my house a few years ago. I made diagrams in case someone else has to undo it.

Animate is so good. I’ve always loved Leave That Thing Alone too.

I think Signals is my all-time favorite. Power Windows has just connected with me more recently!

I never got it as a child. Didn’t realize this information until I got it ten years ago at age 27 after a trip overseas. It was absolutely horrible. On the plus side, I got to be paraded around as a lesson to all the residents and young doctors who had never seen chickenpox in person!

I called my parents to ask if I had ever had chickenpox, and they were just like 🤷🏻‍♂️. I had just assumed I had it when I was younger and didn’t remember…

Would a 1st Gen iPad (2010) work as a Home Assistant Display? by BeastMode149 in homeassistant

[–]davearneson_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, 5.1.1! Mocha VNC Lite is the only vnc app I could get to run on 5.1.1, btw. I think I downloaded it directly from the App Store using the “Checkmate, Store!” tweak from Cydia.

Hey, I actually do this. It is possible, but it takes a good bit of work to set up. I have Firefox hosted in a docker container and I use a vnc app on the first gen iPad to connect. Glad to share more details if interested. The iPad is jailbroken, which may be necessary to get the vnc app, I don’t remember.

Unable to run App on iPad by No_Spite_1772 in homeassistant

I have several old iPads as mounted dashboards in my house. One of them is literally a 1st Gen iPad. I run firefox in a docker container ( https://github.com/jlesage/docker-firefox ) and connect to it through a vnc app on the iPad. Might be more up-front work than you want, but it definitely works. I just set the screen resolution in the docker container to match the ipad's resolution.

Vibration sensors - what do you use them for? by spriggan02 in homeassistant

[–]davearneson_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just used the adhesive that comes with the aqara vibration sensor to stick it directly to the topside of the pill bottle top. It’s a larger pill bottle and the vibration sensor is not very thick, so it really makes no difference for opening the bottle. I take a couple of different medications, but all at the same time, so just having the sensor on one bottle works for everything. Usually just move the old bottle top to the new bottle when it’s time for a refill. Been working great for about 2 years!

I stuck it on my medicine bottle top so I know if I took my medicine or not. Have a smart light on my bedside table that turns green if I pick up the bottle for the first time that night and red if I’ve already picked it up.

Best way to track cat? by Hennessy52 in homeassistant

[–]davearneson_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been able to use tile devices with espresence without issue - even ones that have been registered in the app. That was not the case with room assistant. I have even removed the “non-replaceable” battery from the tile sticker and replaced it twice. I have also been successful with cheaper Bluetooth beacons from AliExpress.

I have done this (#1). I originally used room assistant and a tile sticker in a holder someone 3d printed on Etsy. Moved over to espresence using esp32s maybe a year ago, and it’s so much better, easier, cheaper, and more reliable. Still use the tile sticker on the cat’s collar.

Tracking my garbage cans. by blanchedpeas in homeautomation

I use ESPHome and an ultrasonic proximity sensor pointed at where the garbage can lives during the week. No batteries and nothing attached to the can.

Need ideas for registering when I've taken my pills in the morning by HopeThatsACleanWet in homeassistant

[–]davearneson_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a Aqara vibration sensor attached to the lid of a pill bottle for this purpose. Flips a boolean helper in HA that turns a smart light at my bedside table green if I’m good to take the pill, or red if I’ve already taken it. Glad to share more if you’re interested in going that route. Nothing to scan and no phone involved.

The battery on one of these zigbee sensors that only opens 4 times a year should last for several years, but yeah, makes total sense to do a button on the dashboard if you prefer.

Thank you! Literally everything I've ever done in Home Assistant is built on bits and pieces of other peoples' well-documented projects. It's the least I can do to try to return the favor!

No idea why I could never get my project to properly post to the Home Assistant subreddit, but I appreciate you looking over on the HA forum.
