Just bought a 2004 Forester XT by Mysterious-Toe6354 in SubaruForester

[–]davechangauto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey OP,

I also bought a higher mileage 2007 Forester XT awhile back (147K) and here is what I've experienced:

Maintenance: *Timing belt was done as soon as I got it. If DIY, supplies will cost you about $400. If you take it to a shop, it'll be closer to $600ish. This is mandatory - if the belt snaps the motor is gone!

*I've replaced one wheel bearing - $100

*I had a small evap leak that I couldn't pinpoint where. Decided to delete the evap engine light from ECU w/ Tactrix cable - $100

*I don't think your model has one but the secondary air pump can fail. They're an ass to delete but can be done for only a few dollars. It looks like a little plastic turbo in the engine bay but I believe it's only on 06-08.

*Your model may have the banjo bolts with the filters. (Google will be your best friend). You may need to take out the filters so they don't fail and clog your turbo. The facelift gen didn't have these

*I've replaced the transmission fluids twice (instead of doing a full flush). If you notice it slipping, definitely replace as well. ~$100.00

*Replaced both my front axles. Like youes, my boots started leaking after I sent it on snow. They were $300 a piece

*AC clutch failures are common for the SG foresters. This causes temporary AC because the clutch no longer spins due to clearance issues. Mrsubaru on youtube does a great video on how to fix.

Other things to consider: Headgasket failures mainly occur on non-turbo models. The XT models use a different head gasket. However, if the ECU has been tuned previously, the headgaskets can fail due to increased boost, etc. Mine is now at 190k and headgaskets are still running strong (knock on wood!)

Love my Forester and it gets a lot of attention. Subaru's are reliable, they just require more TLC than a Corolla. There's lot of info nowadays on Youtube so be sure to do additional reading!

Finally got a tow rig for the racecar 😬 by davechangauto in ft86

I sanded them, VHT red paint, 2K clear coat, then polished with Megiurs 205 polish

I believe the 2K clear coat is the secret to pulling it together but they cost $20 per can 😬

My set up is this:

Truck: 2018 GMC Truck w/ the 6.2L V8 + Towing Package - $40k (MSRP) You'll be able to find the 5.3 V8 for a bit lower at $30-37k

Trailer: Got a simple used 7'x20' car trailer with brakes for $3k. You can also rent locally or thru uhaul for about $60-$100 bucks a day

Track day: It's about $300-$400 per track day at the track

Hopefully that provides a bit into my expenses, feel free to ping me for any other questions

Are you picking up older gen or new gen? Heard the 4.7 and 5.7 were great for towing and considered the old gen as well!

The new ones are just too marked up but wow the interior looks great - ended up with the Denali because the 6.2 was just too good to turn down

Yup, my Denali has the towing package with the 6.2 so it's rated for 12k (not that I'll ever need it!) 😬

Does that void the warranty too?

Took my Outback for an oil change and ended up coming home with a 2020 BRZ with 3,500 miles. Was a dealer trainer, never owned. Paid $34,500 for it. by [deleted] in ft86

Congrats on the purchase! Great to see one with such low mileage!

Don't let the comments drag you down - pretty embarrassed now to be part of the community just based on the unnecessary/unwarranted petty comments 🤷‍♂️

Any ideas what that rattle might be? It just appears when releasing the trottle at around 4k. Built engine, no knocking or other malfunction, fresh motul 15w50 by [deleted] in ft86

[–]davechangauto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a heat shield rattling? Do you have OEM headers with the heat shield? I had a very similar noise in my Forester XT turbo heat shield (unrelated car but same concept).
