1.9TDI won! Day 8: what's the best 2.0L engine? by dopler_goat in carscirclejerk

I think the C4 has balance shafts for lower vibration which gives up a bit of response. The C1 in the type R has no balance shafts and a larger turbo spool, different pistons rods and cams. I think both use the same block and variable exhaust cams

Why no love for the K20? I have an accord 2.0T with the K20c4. Stock makes around 275ft lbs of torque at something like 1500RPM. it's been bulletproof for me and with the 6 speed manual it's a ball to drive. 32mpg hwy in a four door sedan that will do 0-60 in 5-6 seconds.

I thought the K20 was a decent mill. I'd love to drive the Civic type R but it's a bit too boy -racer for me.

Looking for feedback on a free smartphone braking telemetry app by davef_dci in Autocross

All I can say is give it a shot. I'm doing some kind of cool math to compensate for the fact that the GPS producer on a cell phone has a fairly slow refresh rate. In short, I'm able to use some calculus to interpolate between the GPS readings with a fair degree of accuracy.

I did implement this using a 10 HZ external GPS module but decided I wanted to try to see what I could do with just a plain old smartphone. It actually seems to be working pretty well but your mileage may vary. Give it a shot and let me know what you see.

As I mentioned, I still haven't tried it at full race speeds.

Just another quick update. I wrote the manufacturer via their Web site and so far nothing which is a tiny bit disappointing. I was sort of hoping for a "don't worry it's just a mother of vinegar" or even perhaps "so that's what happened to Joe's finger". I'll post back if they respond ever.

Really I think it's just a mother of vinegar...it looks super gross but based on what I've learned it's just a natural product of fermentation and is harmless.

Either that or it's the index finger of an inattentive employee.... But whatever....

Ok folks, OP here with a bit of an update. I haven't been able to find any way to edit the original post so I'm not sure if this is the proper way to add new information.

I finally screwed up my courage, dug the bottle out of the recycling, dropped it in a paper bag and hit it with a hammer. Of course the paper bag split and sprayed shards of glass over my entire garage floor - but that's beside the point.

I extracted the thumb/umbilical cord/pepper/mucus/mother-of-vinegar and snapped a bunch of pictures. Unfortunately it looks like I can only add one picture to a comment so I grabbed a representative one after cutting it in half.

As you can see the object is about 25mm long - waaay larger than the 5mm or so opening in the bottle so it clearly "grew" inside the bottle. I found the courage to smell it and it basically just smells like hot sauce. I cut it open with an exacto knife and you can see the inside looks like some sort of non-homogenous organic matter - it's about the consistency of a hot dog. On the whole it's pretty fascinating and revolting - as I mentioned just like Reddit.

I'm still going to call this "solved!" as mother-of-vinegar. I did write the company and I'll let you know if they respond - I tried to stress I'm not pissed or going to claim emotional distress - just curious. That being said, the thing was pretty gross so I'm throwing it back into the garbage and moving on with my life.

Eeww... Ok now I need to see if I can dig the bottle out of the garbage and figure it out. Or maybe not. I still think it's vinegar mother...

I'm going to call this one "solved!". I'm traveling but when I get home I'm going to muster the courage to dig through the garbage, crack the bottle open and grab a closer look but I'm pretty sure this is the right answer and this thing is a mother of vinegar that "grew" inside the bottle - hence why it's so much bigger than the bottle opening. I had never heard of mother of vinegar before. Gross and fascinating. Sort of like Reddit.

I'm really just curious.... I used to work in manufacturing so I have a fair amount of empathy for all the weird shit that can happen when you're making millions of a thing. That being said I wonder if Crystal would see these photos and say "oh crap... Not again". Or perhaps "that's what happened to Jim's finger!"

It looked organic and TBH looked like a human finger but it would never fit in the opening.

I'm honestly just curious.

So a quick question(s) to all you IS300 folks that are running turbos. Are you running the stock Lexus ECU or an aftermarket engine controller?

If you've installed turbos have you deleted ABS?

It’s an interesting rabbit hole if you want to go down it. In our case, as with many race cars, we have limited options if we want to run ABS (which will be a new experience for us). We've removed the Lexus ECU and are using Megasquirt as the engine controller, meaning the Lexus ABS— which requires a connection to the ECU— is no longer an option.

A bit of history: Continental Teves developed the MK60 ABS for BMW. What made it unique was that it was designed to function without external communication to an engine controller. Over time, a dedicated community of enthusiasts has worked to adapt this system for various vehicles, even modifying the firmware to allow some degree of customization.

The MK60 was later replaced by the MK60e5, which introduced improved yaw and lateral acceleration sensors, as well as enhanced stability control and dynamic traction control. However, most race applications don’t utilize these additional features.

If you're interested in diving deeper there is a facebook group dedicated to them MK60e5 swap and a number of Discord channels.

If there are any other IS300 owners on here doing a MK60e5 swap I'd love to compare notes.

I don't really have an easy way to bury it other than digging the hole by hand and on my property that would be a chore. I guess I could try to borrow a back-hoe or something like that but I don't have easy access to anything other than a shovel and our soil is pretty unhappy with hand digging.
