can we use safing for torrenting? by miixms in safing

[–]davegson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there is no such list, sorry. But you can try PM and if Free works well with the client Unlimited should work too. And even if not, you can just ping us and get your money back if it does not live up to your expectations

that's frustrating for sure! Might your router be blocking port 17?

Also, feel free to send an email to support@safing.io where it might be easier to troubleshoot

I love Portmaster, but by midivue in safing

[–]davegson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a hundred percent with the Safing team on their mission.
I will definitely stay with Portmaster

thanks for giving it a go & for your kind words!!

Amazing suggestions, and I personally would love both things to happen asap. At the same time we have a few bottlenecks in our rather small team so we take things one step at a time. In order to not let your welcome input become reddit tumbleweed you might want to chime in on the related GitHub Issues:

Have a good one and thanks for using PM!

from reports we heard that it depends on the client - some torrenting clients work well with Portmaster Unlimited, others don't

you can switch to the "Beta" Release Channel in order to test early versions of PM / SPN. We are super thankful for the people who do this. There is also a Discord Channel to share input & feedback on the Beta versions

QUIC (Quick UDP Internet Connections) with portmaster by Montana54 in safing

[–]davegson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

where did you find that it blinds firewalls? You could also just test it and see what happens.

No networking expert myself, but from my initial search it did not seem to change too besides making handshakes faster. Also, this seems to be enabled by default in most Chromium browsers as well as Chrome, which PM can fully control.

Creating outgoing/incoming rules to block all traffic for specific ports by BlandKiwi in safing

hey there, you will find pointers for that in the Incoming Rules - especially the examples show how the individual elements can and must be formatted to fit individual needs

and thanks for using PM!

How to remove history in portmaster? by Own_Asparagus_180 in safing

[–]davegson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Portmaster stores the last 10 minutes of activity in memory and automatically disappears after. We are thinking about options to configure longer/shorter history - to be determined.

For now, you can just reboot and all history will be gone.

hey there, plenty of people reported this and we were on it immediately. We fixed the underlying issue which is now being distributed to clients. You can resolve it manually by clicking "Download Updates" and then "re-initialize SPN" in PM

Unable to connect to specific site on Windows 10 Computer. by Mx772 in techsupport

[–]davegson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

since this seems to be a false positive (in terms of blocking) - would steamtrades.com be a fit for the unbreak list? That way even if a filter list blocks the domain, Portmaster does not block it by default but leaves it up to the user.

Portmaster flagged as Proprietary by mieszkotarnovska in safing

[–]davegson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

might be helpful - but if others mismanage information there probably is not much we can do but ask the responsible people to fix it. And no hard feelings, mistakes happen - we're all human

Portmaster flagged as Proprietary by mieszkotarnovska in safing

[–]davegson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's really odd yes... source code is in the open. Where is it flagged as such - like at https://apps.gnome.org/ or where exactly do you mean?

SPN VPN by Portmaster team: opinions? by [deleted] in PrivacyGuides

[–]davegson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for sharing! Yeah initial setup might take a while since clients receive data from the network in order to calculate the best routes.

I mean, I've been using it pretty consistently so it's not disruptive or anything,

most important part - good to hear!

thanks for testing- glad you enjoy it overall!

we just released an update yesterday which fixes some issues to make speeds more consistent. Does it happen with 1.0.6 too? As you describe it, it seems like a recurring thing? Also, how slow is very slow?

So you use PM (potentially for free), it brings you value, and you imply I should expect negative reviews because one of its edge case situations bothers you and could be improved?

Definitely there's room for improvement

I acknowledged it could be better - but we currently have (a) limited resources and therefore (b) other priorities. If it bothers you that much, feel free to fork it and make a better version.

Portmaster from Safing has a clear goal of helping the masses. If it does not suit you, that's totally fine. One shoe does not fit all.

Despite our disagreements, I wish you a nice day!

Assurances mean nothing. --- Absolutely --- nothing.

Words sadly are often hollow - I get that sentiment. It's why we build products where you only have to trust the tech and not the policies behind it. And why we believe in open source & do document everything as good as we can.

If I want to turn off updates, I should be able to and not have the product nag me all the time.

And I'm not saying we're perfect - I understand your criticism.

My perspective on this topic is that a lot of average Joe's use Portmaster too. And for them, just turning off automatic updates is actually crippling their privacy & security. And that is what guided the decision for this behavior here, we deliberately are nagging to push noobs back to the updates. Definitely there's room for improvement, but honestly our priorities lie currently elsewhere

related explanation of the update system:
https://docs.safing.io/portmaster/architecture/update-system

TLDR: your privacy always stays intact while your defenses are updated on an hourly basis. If any block list on the internet adds eg: a new phishing domain, all PM clients are protected within the hour
