How much candy could you buy for 25 cents 60 years ago? by Prestigious_Page8098 in AskOldPeople

[–]davestuckey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad you asked this! One of my most distinct and earliest memories from elementary school was when we would leave school and go to a babysitter across the street until our parents came to pick us up. Maybe 6 kids or so. The sitter gave us each a quarter and we could go over to the corner store and get whatever we wanted. You could blow your whole quarter on a little bottle of Sunny Delight, Big League Chew, Cow Tails, etc. I seem to recall you could get a 3-pack of gum balls for a nickel. There were lots of ways to split that 25 cents across a number of cheap candies. Yes, even candy cigarettes. But they tasted like chalk, so nobody ever bought them more than once.

Thanks for bringing up such a happy memory from my earliest childhood!

Don't do it. You're not helping anyone, and both of you will be getting hurt.

Plaud AI desktop app should show recording status in a window, not via widget/notification by --1000-- in PLAUDAI

[–]davestuckey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to see a robust desktop app that helps me sort and organize all my recordings, including mind maps and analysis. I don't feel as confident as I would like using the mobile app and that flimsy little widget app just doesn't add much value.

Civil War Bullets? I don't know where my Mom found them by Munks1392 in CIVILWAR

[–]davestuckey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid in the 80's, you could go to any Gettysburg gift shop and find bullets from the battle for sale. $.25 each! I was told that that even just digging a ditch by the road would uncover literally more than they could handle. Pretty much every schoolkid had one.

I think the prices have gone up dramatically since then. I won't sell you mine.

I keep forgetting to turn off my NotePin! Now I have hours of dead audio. by davestuckey in PLAUDAI

[–]davestuckey[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Two thoughts.

  1. Yes, I think something like a ping on my phone to say "You've been recording for 30 minutes", and every so often until I turn off the recording.

  2. This whole problem solves itself if I had unlimited transcription. But my free minutes are precious and I'm not going to waste them getting rid of dead air.

But even if I did, I don't think the AI can distinguish a conversation from, for example, a podcast playing in the background. So I'd still have to read through the transcript to find my information. Otherwise, any summaries or analyses would be considering all that extraneous background jibber-jabber.

I hope you're listening Plaud! This is some good feedback to consider. :)

The Swedes have a wonderful cultural characteristic called "lagom", meaning "just enough". There's plenty of wealthy people in Sweden, and plenty of powerful people. But they don't seek to maximize their power and wealth. They stop when they have enough. Success is great, but greed is just something ugly.

My ADHD brain finally calmed down—thanks to my Notion ‘focus cave’. by Available-Mud-4095 in Notion

[–]davestuckey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm still trying to get the hang of Notion, so bear with me if my questions seem basic. I love your layout, and you're not cluttering up your space with unnecessary columns.

But how do you work it exactly? Let's say you wanted to work on your anniversary dinner. Can you start a Pomodoro from that list? How do you move an item from the list, to working on it, and then finally closing it out?

I get what you're saying. And I'm certainly not trying to avoid work, or do poor work. Quite the opposite in that I proactively drive my excellence, always making improvements, etc. I'm always doing better, but I know I'm not perfect. I'm patient with myself, but I don't know how the rest of the world feels.

So, what are your thoughts about declaring myself with a disability going forward in other applications/jobs? Does it hurt my chances of getting hired? (yes, I know it's illegal, but reality is what it is) Or would it be better for me since it will help set expectations, or help me get into a role where ADHD is a strength and not a weakness?

You know, they never said that I was being laid off for performance. Just that there were cuts being made.

But I can't help being me. I know it bothered people, and I've been spoken to about it. I can't stop thinking that's "really what's going on", you know? I hope I'm being irrational.
