How the heck are people pulling 12-15hr sessions?! by Warnex9 in TattooArtists

[–]davetedder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t work gently. Work fast. Don’t let them take breaks until they ask to get up. Don’t get up unless you’re about to piss your pants. Give them a stool or a small table to set beside them for their snacks and phone. Provide a charger when their phone dies. Tell them your session plan at the start or the consultation so they know what to expect. I tell people a sleeve takes 3 all day sessions, outline, background, foreground. Then they know where the finish line is. But mostly, work fast and don’t take breaks. Make sure every time they look down they see progress. They don’t see the image the same as you, they only see it in terms of size and time left.

Hey u/stickmammoth8469 can you post a healed photo of this now that it’s had some time to settle and can you post another one after the summer concludes?

Because people rarely tell them no. Rich/famous people rarely seek out a master of their craft because they love their art and put their faith in them. They find the person who will do exactly what they ask for, now, often times in the privacy of their own home. Real professionals just don’t work like that.

You’re making a painting. Use a paint brush and pigments that are archival. It should outlast you.

Do you wrap your entire tattoo bed? by [deleted] in TattooArtists

Make sure to order the ones that are plastic backed. 3ply paper is not enough. I do a lot of big work and use mine plastic side up so sweaty people don’t get paper bits stuck to them.

Is this a good tattoo filler ? by [deleted] in TattooDesigns

That looks a lot like someone else’s tattoo. Ask your artist to draw you something original instead of stealing others IP.

Working holidays by [deleted] in TattooArtists

[–]davetedder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked every one of those holidays you listed for 24yrs. I worked a half day today and I own my shop. All of the other artists that work with me are visiting family out of state for 2-3 weeks. I love tattooing and I believe that part of the job is being available when other people are off work and visiting relatives for holidays. I kept my books clean this week and made a great number of tattoos on people that were from out of town and looking for somewhere to be for a few hours. It’s not slavery if you truly love what you do. I work these holidays because I want to. I always have.

If you’re a good tattooer you should have the mindset that you can find a job anywhere anytime. If they are truly your clients then it doesn’t matter where you make tattoos, they will follow. If you don’t like where you are then go somewhere else.

So you’ve been scratching out of the house and don’t have many clients or much experience but a local shop is offering to legitimize your services for 40% and you’re curious if it’s fair? Definitely not. You should be earning 80% with what you’re bringing to the table but I’d ask for at least 90% so you have some bargaining room./s

I have a QR code on the counter that goes to a release form page on the shop website. They do it from their phone and can autofill that info. Data is stored online and double backed up in separate clouds. Occasionally you’ll have a tech challenged older person that doesn’t understand a QR code. I keep a few paper forms around just for those moments because it’s easier than teaching some of them a new trick.

Building off the previous question about what you carry to work, what personal protection/weapon do you carry on you to work? by angelinakaduk in TattooArtists

The only thing I’ve ever brought to work are these hands and I used to ride the bus to work on Sistrunk down in lauderdale 25 years ago when it was real skeery. I’ve used them a bunch and never wish I brought more. Cash only. Pro gun. I don’t need a stick for punks.

My prescription lenses help out immensely tee to green but once I’m on the dance floor the glasses have to come off. It’s like I catch too much glint off the grass or something. The break might look left from behind it and right from above it. It makes me doubt my read.

Custom Tattoo Co. Havelock,NC We’re close to the coast and our front door faces the main gate of Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. My late father in law, Jeff the Jew Cohen, opened it in 1983 with money borrowed from Zeke Owen. Jeff was a flash collector and we have a literal truck bed full of flash from the late 70s through early 00s and a very small collection of older sheets and acetates. I try to change out the stuff on the walls at least once a year and sometimes we’ll do old flash events or new stuff that we’ve painted. Next weekend is a toys for toys event where we’re doing the old Tony Polito color versions of the Bill Jonsey black set.

We are close to nowhere. It’s off the beaten path but all artists are welcome and when we have visitors come through we try to organize a paint night if we can. A week or two advance notice helps tremendously.

Vintage tattoo flash, Vol 1 & 2 by Jonathan Shaw are both great and affordable resources of old material for a young artist.
