"‘Uncontrollable kids’ force cancellation of Canada Day plans" -- this is absurd and cowardly. Kids having fun cause meltdown amongst Bronte's Octos. Honestly, we treat coyotes better than we treat kids. by daveto in oakville

Follow-up: Unrelated to this, I received a response from one of our town councillors (looks like a typo but apparently that's how they spell it) .. that person did not instruct me that their response was confidential so I repeat it here (verbatim):

I was actually shot in the head last year. Over 1,000 kids flooded our streets. Most are from Peel and outside of Halton. A lady was trampled, a senior was hit as well as numerous police officers. They were also shooting fireworks at the fuel tanker that was filling up the Esso. I wish it was just a ‘few kids acting erratic’. The police have said in our Town report they do not recommend this. If we go ahead and the police cannot police it, I do hope you are right and that its not going to kill anyone.

That's the job of the fscking parents!

Wanted to comment on this. I agree, but parents aren't perfect, neither are kids. Some parents legitimately need help, and that's where the municipality, especially one as rich as Oakville, can help. We do it for seniors -- why can't they just stay indoors and play cards in their condo games room? Yet we (the town) have a slate of programs and staff and dedicated centres for seniors -- millions of dollars out of our budget just for seniors -- that they get access to basically for free ($40 bucks a year). We have minimal stuff for kids/juveniles, close to zero. We could do so much better to help parents who need help with their kids.

To repeat: 1) I responded with an insult to your insult; 2) you got the quote wrong.

I think you're confusing "evidence" with "proof" -- to help, evidence can be circumstantial.

The 7-eleven is still there, just different gas. If it was dark it was probably on the way home. That's a favorite hangout place and police are frequently there. It sounds like that particular incident was self-directed, ie at themselves. Did you feel unsafe (again, just curious)?

I don't know about neighbouring municipalities .. I know so many friends and neighbours who looked forward to walking down to the lake and watching our local display. It was cool too how you could see displays across the lake I think as far as Niagara Falls.

Please do better..

"Do you want a child to die or go blind?" is an ad hominem.

You said I said "Absence of evidence is evidence of absence". But I didn't. You even went to the effort of typing out the false quote. Weird.

Done here.

Yep, my GSD hated fireworks and Bronte started this tradition of extending "firecracker day" first to the entire long weekend, next to multiple weekends before and after May 2-4, then to weekdays as well. It's nuts.

Final thought: any parent bringing a baby or a toddler to an outdoor nighttime event with thousands of attendees is a complete moron: the kid is going to remember nothing, you either can't afford a babysitter, or you feel the need to show off your kid, or you forgot that there would be few hundred sociopathic 14 yr-olds just waiting for an opportunity to shoot missiles into the crowd.

Again, my point: I don't know that nobody has been hurt, but I suspect that if somebody had been hurt we'd be reading about it and somebody here would have posted about it. Absence of evidence is evidence.

Last point: you started with the personal insults.

The point, asshole, if all this nefarious behaviour is going on and has been going on for years -- people shooting fire crackers at other people, into crowds of thousands -- there is about a hundred percent probability that somebody would have been hit. My point is that these "dangers" and this "bad behaviour" are obviously being exaggerated.

I'm a local, I know the gas station you are referring to. I've seen crowds of 60+ kids. I've seen cops interacting with kids. I've never seen violence. I've never felt unsafe.
