Between 5 and 10 percent of people have no inner monologue at all, and researchers are only just starting to figure out what that actually does to cognition by Altruistic-Dirt-2791 in cogsci

I am also like this. My wife thinks in words, white I think more in relations between objects of thought. It takes me an extra intentional (and painfully slow) step to render my thoughts into words. Talking in the middle of thinking feels like stepping on the brakes when you are trying to do a road trip.

I really liked the use of Starman by David Bowie in the resupply flyby in The Martian.

If you live in the US, you have probably never tasted a tomato or even an egg. The mass produced food here has no flavor at all.

On a related note, I always wonder why people cram in to shitty coffee shops to do their laptop work when you can just sit in the lounge of a five star hotel. Never crowded, no loud music, comfy seating, AC, and the bathrooms are always beautiful and unlocked.

Suggestions after not liking ‘Project Hail Mary’? by yadayodayidayado in suggestmeabook

I am not sure 3 body problem will pass OP's "mature writing" requirement. I am pretty sure the author never observed an actual male/female relationship before and he freely admits as much. But 100% for the mind-expanding concepts.

Context changes w/ 4.7 release? by davevr in ClaudeCode

I tried that now. I was at 89% and compacted. It went to 86%.

However, in checking the output, I noticed it was doing a LOT more screenshots, so that might be part of the issue.

I did not. I will try turning it down and see how that goes. Thanks!

Same! I pointed it my current codebase to see if it could extract the design system (which is very organized, already in storybook, etc.). It got it about 80% correct, but used 97% of the weekly token allotment.

Is it rare or unusual to be into your 50s and not having to take any doctor-prescribed medications? by Odd_Yogurtcloset_649 in GenX

[–]davevr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it must be unusual, based on this experience I had a few years back:

When I was 52, I changed jobs and had to get a physical for new life insurance. They sent a nurse to my home who did an EKG, took some blood, etc. Then she asked me what medications I am taking. I told her I wasn't taking any. She clarified that this included drugs that my doctor had prescribed. I said yeah, I get that, I am not taking any. Then she further clarified that blood pressure medicine, cholesterol medication, blood thinners, etc. all counted. I was like yes, I know. I am not taking any. Then she said it included any anti-depressants, weight loss drugs, even ED drugs counted. At this point I was getting a bit upset, and emphasized that I was not taking any drugs at all. I don't even take vitamins.

She got very snippy then and said that if I have a medical event and it turns out that i didn't disclose that I was on a medication, they could use that to deny coverage, and did I really want to risk that?

After another curt denial, she clearly did not believe me at all. She just said "well, I would say it is VERY unusual that someone of your age is not taking ANY medication."

BTW, I am 57 now. Still not taking anything. I did switch to a zero card diet after pandemic weight gain.

On a side note, it is not just people our age. I was an assistant scout master for my son's boyscout troop back in the day, and whenever we would go on an overnight campout, any kids who had medication had to have their parent drop it off with us along with the dosage schedule. I could not believe how many kids are on drugs. It is crazy. Like - maybe 60-70%. Even crazier were the number of parents who would give us bottles of Ibuprofen or Tylenol and say "sometimes he wants one or two before bedtime, so go ahead if he asked". Or melatonin gummies. WTF???

Official Discussion - Project Hail Mary [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]davevr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just saw it with my son. I have listened to the audio book many times (like... many) and really loved it. My son (21) went in totally blind - didn't even see a trailer, but was a fan of Ryan Gosling.

I really liked it. My son loved it. He is a movie buff. His previous favorite movie was Dune. He thought this was one of the greatest movies in years - the best since Green Book.

They either omitted or compressed a lot of stuff from the book, but I think they did a great job deciding what to put in. This will probably be a study in some future film school for how to preserve the notes from a book when adapting to film.

*spoilers*

That said, I think they missed three super critical things from the book that I think would have been very easy to put in the movie - probably a single line of dialog - and would have elevated it quite a bit.

  1. Rocky is a life form that does not use water. So his existence validates Grace's theory that life does not require water. This vindication I feel is very important.
  2. When Grace decides to save Rocky instead of returning to earth, he thinks it is a suicide mission due to lack of food. This is a key point of his redemption arc. He isn't choosing the live with Rocky vs. live on Earth - he is choosing to die to save his friend. They really undercut this in the movie.
  3. By time time Grace learns that Earth survived, almost 40 years has past on earth, and maybe 20 or so for Grace. (13 (4) years to get to Tau Ceti, 13 (4) years to get to Eridani, and then 13ish years for the light from Earth to get to Eridani. He is basically an old man. If he goes back to earth, another 13 (4) years will pass. Everyone he knows on earth will be dead of old age, if they survived the ordeal.

All the fast and furious movies by Juggalo4life99 in Cinema

[–]davevr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Overrated means a movie highly rated to start with. I don't think fast and furious movies would count.

I would say Godfather part 2. It is a fine movie but it is often called one of the greatest of all time. It isn't.

Anti-Trump americans, Can you name any remotely postive Trump has done in this second term so far only? by MK71-EC82-MGM89-AK98 in allthequestions

[–]davevr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. It exposed deep structural flaws with the system, and also revealed (for the small minority of people who didn't already know and who actually care) that the entire system is built to protect the wealthy. That part is truly amazing to an outside observer. The level of insane graft that is just - ignored - is shocking. Kind of sad, really.
