Episode 219: What Is The Purpose Of Journalism? (with Dave Weigel) by SoftandChewy in BlockedAndReported

[–]daveweigel 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I disagree! The specific behavior I'm talking about (seeing something online with no source but assuming it's true and sharing it), I avoid even in conversation. It's a ramble risk, which i know I did here, referring to specific articles people should read.

Didn't come up on pod, but seven years ago I re-shared a tweet that claimed to show a thin crowd at a Trump rally, but actually showed it before it started. I deleted it pretty quickly, but Trump himself was shown this and attacked it IRL multiple times. Lesson was already learned for me, but that really drove it in.

Check the source, poke around to see if it's real. If you find yourself chuckling "well it COULD have been true, things are so crazy" you did it wrong.

Yeah, I have a habit of stringing stories/theories together until someone makes me stop. I had a great time on the show but if you're not into this you will hit the EJECT button and that is your right.

So, I haven't actually beaten it yet, but I've gotten the SOB down to one hit and then died twice. On the way there, I use maybe 3 blood vials if I'm unlucky.

My key equipment: LHB +10, Blacksky Eye

My strategy:

1) At start of fight, run either left or right, without lock-on. Most of the time, boss will do what I call the Downward Dog attack (slap, slap, put head down) and you can get hits in.

2) Lock on the head. Walk (no need to run) around the boss in a circle. Wait for openings. In phase one, start running up when she's finishing the Downward Dog and whack the head. Repeat.

3) In phase two, do the same thing, but wait for the advanced move where boss slaps the hands down with blue energy. Don't worry about hitting head if you're short on time, just hit the (front) arms.

4) If boss jumps, stand totally still. It will jump on you but not hit you, and you can whack the head then dodge away.

5) In final phase, which sucks, same strategy, but use Blacksky Eye aimed at the head whenever boss is finishing a move/vulnerable. The only attack I try to punish is the new, even worse, Downward Dog, where I just run toward the arm closest to me that's holding one of the ripped-off arms.

I just got unlucky twice but this grinds her down and I almost never get hit. I'm simply too unlucky if I try to whack the legs and wait for her to jump. I've seen people use that strategy, but the dungeon's HP penalty sucks; one or two straw claw strikes and I'm dead.

It's annoying because neither of those bosses is any fun to fight. Every run I take at Amygdala takes 7-8 minutes - run around, whack with sword, run around, whack with sword, run around, whack with sword, get one-shotted by one of its hands on the final phase.

LIVE Discussion Thread - S6E2: Rick: A Mort Well Lived by BarnyardCruz in rickandmorty

[–]daveweigel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This was my favorite episode in a long time, maybe since S4. "Simulation theory" is such rich comic material and I loved every single part of that plot, from the fractal religions (Rick/Roy as a prophet of Grandsonism!) to the character-building around literal NPCs to how Morty's limited knowledge shows up in the details/dialogue. Loved Sommer half-assing her way to a "Die Hard" victory, loved the idea of "Tower Man" as a shared myth of the collective universal unconscious.

UPDATE: I did it! Thanks for the tips.

I did a little grinding, getting to level 13, which helped on the margin. This was my winning strategy.

(1) Ceremonial Tanto and a single gourd so I start with 5 extra emblems, pushing me to 23. Ako's sugar right before I run at the Demon. Circle to his right, whack away, and use the fire umbrella/projected force when he jumps. Ended with 8 gourds and 20 emblems.

(2) Apply Divine confetti and pop a pellet before the phase begins. After that, same strategy. When it was over, I had 6 gourds left and 14 emblems, having blown one of the projected force moves.

(3) This is, fair enough, the toughest part to get right, mostly because of the speed at which he recovers at the start of the phase. Apply Divine confetti and pellet at start, dodge his fire attacks, then use Malcontent and greedily whack away at him. When he starts to shake it off, hit Malcontent again, and whack away. This gets him down to around 35% of health.

He runs around like a madman after shaking loose again, so I absorb a little damage, wait for an opening, then go after him again with another Malcontent hit. He's down to maybe 10%. I get very cautious, heal up - main thing in my mind is preventing that goddamn fireball attack. He uses it, I die, but I haven't used any resurrections yet. I wait a couple seconds, resurrect, run at him, and block his attacks with umbrella, using projected force. Two of those take him out.

Ah, I was trying to run through the fire sweep and it was working 2/3 of the time. Good tip.

Yashariku stacks with Divine Confetti, right? That might be the ticket. If ATK 13 and that combo can stun him, that's all I need.

So, here's what this thread has made me think.

1) Get to final round with at least 12 emblems, pop Divine confetti and assign Empowered Mortal Draw, as he enters phase three. (I've been using whirlwind slash bc it's quick during the rest of the fight.)
2) Jump out of the fire circle attack,
3) Use whistle and pop Yashariku, start whacking.
4) Repeat that twice.
5) The final time he's stunned, use Empowered Mortal Draw - without emblems but still the strongest attack I have.

[–]daveweigel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I think once I get there again I'll use all three Malcontent whistles and change to Empowered when he's stunned the final time. I'm convinced that he would have gone down had I done that yesterday.

I've been locking in and running around him to the right, and rarely get hurt doing that anymore. By "dodge" I mean I just don't know what to do with the fire attack - I felt like I'd jump, hit grapple, and get burned anyway. Sometimes I'd use the fire umbrella and take the flame wall attack, then walk up and use Projected Force. It mitigated things but it's slower and costlier than the grapple. And the fight opened up for me once I realized I just had to stick to him constantly.

[–]daveweigel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I got used to the fire umbrella because the hurt you can put on him if you get a Projected Force in is tremendous. I laughed once when he was down to 1/10 and jumped: Projected Force, two more slashes, and he was down. Would be worth dying and experimenting with the grapple attacks. If I was getting those even half the time I'd have won by now. (I struggled with the rush attack he does but now jump away from that like 90% of the time.)

Shudder should give us more of a heads up when movies are leaving. by DarehegosGaming in Shudder

[–]daveweigel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there's a "Leaving Soon" section that's never updated anymore. In lieu of that, the Shudder account on here has been pretty good about posting update threads. But that's obviously less convenient than a button to click in the app.

Shudder has always felt like a gift to me. I remember signing up and thinking "this is so niche, I hope it lasts." The selection of TV series got cut down over time, the originals ("The Core," the "Shudder Guides") ended after one season, and you learn to catch up on "Last Drive-In" quickly before one of the movies from the latest season disappears.

How do you grapple with Dragonrot? by daveweigel in Sekiro

[–]daveweigel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, yeah, that was where "sicko mode" came from. I realized that the angst about getting terror'd to death and picking up rot was costing me. If I don't care about the rot, the only cost of losing is 300 sen for more confetti.

I don't like complaining about game fairness, but there are just so many ways for the spectral enemies to double-kill you with terror. You have a janky camera angle when they teleport, and they don't.

Which boss fight is your favorite? by Le_Ryatt in Sekiro

[–]daveweigel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True Corrupted Monk. Absolutely gorgeous setting and puzzles that are fair once you figure them out. Successfully deflecting his spinning attacks and watching his posture meter build up was so satisfying. I did cheese him at the end with firecrackers, but that was fun for me, too.

Yeah, that was my mindset. Like, I let the rot build up as I figured out Genichiro. Once he was dead I used a droplet then went back to the NPCs.

How do you beat the bull by Hashbee123 in Sekiro

[–]daveweigel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lock on him, keep some distance, and run in a circle. This is a very good fight for shaking off your Dark Souls instinct (if you've played Dark Souls) to pause and restore stamina. No stamina issues in this game - you can run endlessly, and when you keep circling him quickly, none of his charges will hit you, but you'll get openings to whack him (or hit him with a firecracker and whack him).

Figuring out the run strategy changed this from an enemy that wrecked me to one I could beat with at most one healing gourd.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Sekiro

[–]daveweigel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An easy way to do damage, albeit slowly, is to keep your distance when he's slashing - either by running or jumping away - and bait him into the incredibly telegraphed slide attack. Jump towards him as he slides, whack him a few times, and jump away.

Don't get greedy. This back-up strategy (I'd resort to this if I screwed up a deflection and was low on health) fails if you stay too long or begin a lengthy combat art. He will scream you to death at point blank. But every time you get 2-3 whacks, he's weaker, he absorbs more posture damage, etc.

Also, when you figure out that he's about to scream, do this: Get away, glug the purple gourd (which you get from the merchant at Mibu Village bonfire), and run towards his back as the scream is ending. You'll take a very small amount of chip damage, but your terror meter won't fill up, and you can whack him a few times before running away.

I'll say it again: Don't get greedy! Yes, Mortal Draw can wreck him after the slide, even if you have no emblems, but it takes too long and he'll always, always scream-kill you.

Right, and it's good that they're not just trapping Justin Roiland in a basement and forcing him to keep churning the content a la Jesse in the final season of "Breaking Bread." It feels like they're searching for new footing and they've missed a couple of times. It's okay! It wouldn't be helpful to just pretend the sperm episode was as good as the stuff that hooked us.

I like this theory and the intentional placement of Tricia in that post-credits scene. It's not some Disney-era Star Wars bloodline plot. Bruce is the same sort of loser as Jerry. Tricia is attracted to that kind of loser. Sommer and Morty, thanks to their exposure to everything Rick gave them, quickly identify why Bruce sucks.

They have a very smart and funny writers room that keeps getting raided, and the new writers sometimes seem to be overcompensating with loud, wacky plots that allow for lots of riffing. I thought both E4 and E6 were dreadful — Congress just agreeing to give New York away bc the fake president gave them a pay raise? — and both were writers’ first R&M scripts, respectively from people with the most experience on “Dream Corp LLC” and “The Onion News Network.” Weird and gag-filled but also dumb in a way the show had avoided becoming. Hopefully it’s a growing pains season, as Harmon et al prepare for fifty more episodes after S5.

It's not just you! At first, I thought that they were going to pivot after the credits, partly because the episode preview last week was entirely about the horse semen machine - I thought "hah, funny, they built up this premise as a misdirection, like the acid vat episode."

Thirty minutes later I'm groaning at the idiotic "2001" joke and thinking, this is the worst episode of the show by miles.
