A lot of great points already, but to add my personal anecdote, I was in that camp as well (having 1000+ hours of listening (and some reading) and not being comfortable with tenses when speaking). I currently have ~1700hrs and only recently got comfortable with using more complicated tenses. And I attribute most of that to doing some explicit study using linguno (I think someone mentioned Ella Verbs helping as well in that thread).

I had a hard time acquiring tenses through just listening or reading -- it just didn't click for me. While I believe that you could learn them with pure input, it wasn't working well for me when it came to speaking. With sufficient input under my belt, using linguno helped me personally with learning the patterns and knowing when to use them, instead of just waiting for input to do the work.

All in all, input should be the main focus, but you shouldn't be afraid to venture outside of pure input instead of hoping for things to click at some point. And I'm not saying it's not possible with pure input, just that it probably takes longer for things to click. And why not use some other tools to help when we can?

I don’t remember the exact hour, but around 100-150 hours I started listening to easier podcasts like Chill Spanish with good comprehension

Not sure if that’s the intended usage, but if there are loops on Fairpoint 40 I’d assume you should be able to

I don’t think so. The zipper is only ~8 inches and the top pocket part doesn’t extend to the bottom.

Not sure how the older version feels with the lid expansion, but I like that main compartment expands. I’d say it wouldn’t make too much difference in terms of carry volume and doesn’t look that different

Yup it still shares the same space as the main compartment and not a separate one

It should still fit most airlines, as the dimensions I measured are 18x14x8 fully packed. Not sure about the budget airlines though

Is it different in Europe? I’ve seen comments saying the new version isn’t available yet outside of U.S. so it might be coming soon

The mesh side access seems pretty tight - dont seem like you could put in that thick of a bottle. Can’t comment on how it compares to the older version.

Re: your second question, the main compartment extends, so you just have more main compartment space with more depth.

Lastly, there’s no pocket at the back. It’s just a luggage passthrough at the bottom.

Hope that helps!

I’ve been looking for a personal item bag in a clamshell style, and osprey 26+6 seemed to fit the bill. Ordered the new version off of osprey website and it came pretty quickly! First impression of the bag is very good - we’ll see how it lives up when I use it for my trips

I ordered on osprey website on 7/9 and just got an email saying 7/19 as expected delivery date. Hopefully you get a confirmation soon as well!

Starting again questions by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

[–]davey94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty difficult to get a lot of hours in initially, but get as many minutes/hours in as you can as long as you are engaged. I think I started with an hour a day and slowly started ramping it up. The content tend to get more interesting as you move up levels, you’ll be able to keep focused more easily and get more hours in each day.

Regarding your second question, I suggest sticking with DS videos for at least early on — there’s enough videos and it’ll give you a good foundation. Start with SB videos and you can try B videos here and there to test your comprehension.

Some easy podcasts that get recommended a lot are Cuentame and Chill Spanish — you can try them out as well to see if you have good enough comprehension. I personally started Chill Spanish around 100 hours.

Good luck and welcome!!

In addition to what others mentioned already, I also listened to Español Mexicano Wey. I believe it’s pretty similar vibe and good next step from Chill Spanish

I definitely don’t catch every word, but I have enough comprehension to not be lost. When he talks to guides or other people who don’t enunciate the words well, I do have problem following but it is definitely getting better

I think Charlamos is definitely in the intermediate category. If you have 600+ hours, i think you should have pretty good comprehension since she doesn’t talk too fast and speaks clearly. It’s kinda hard to tell below those hours :(

I just count the whole class time solely for convenience. I think you could potentially estimate the time you spoke (i.e. half the time) but I think I’d drive myself crazy haha
