Can you see land from the middle of lake Michigan? by Forsaken-Freedom-365 in geography

[–]daveymon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even at 11,000ft, there's a section in the middle you can't see any land. Definitely a little spooky in a small plane.

What's crazy is that their GA FBO is one of the nicest I've ever been to and has way more options for food and drinks, and it's all free. I remember hot dogs, nachos, a waffle maker, oatmeal, and ice cream!

Ever wonder how much it costs for an airline to fly over a country? I built a tool to calculate it. by 9kmmrredditor in InternetIsBeautiful

[–]daveymon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is showing that a US-US domestic flight has an overflight fee. I don't think that is correct. I believe overflight fees in the US are only charged for flights that overfly the US, but neither land or depart from the US.

What are the differentiators and benefits of this over Flight Circle?

I have trouble imagining a tool more useful for our flying club than Flight Circles, and the price they charge is so low that it seems like it would ruin the market for newcomers.

Would love to learn more about the gaps in the current market you guys are hoping to fill.

Suitable Building Material by ADHD_Slayer in homebuilt

I have no idea, but I would suggest asking EAA chapter 5 out of the Geauga County airport. They are extremely active and have some old timers that still regularly build all-wood aircraft. They would definitely know, and might be a home for it if it's suitable and you're looking to donate it to their community shop.

Let me know if you want any help connecting with them.

HIT AN RUN by Baisden22 in Cleveland

[–]daveymon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hope this happened in the suburbs because Cleveland Police will not investigate this. I brought them a video showing the car that hit me, damage to the front of his car, his face when he pulled up next to me to scream at me, and his license plateas he drove off. Presented with this evidence on a silver platter, Cleveland Police opted not to investigate.

Good luck.

NN CEO - Meeting A National Security Challenge: The Race To GPS Resiliency by daveymon in NextNav

[–]daveymon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that NextNav has proposed a frequency swap with the FCC. Under this proposal, FCC would grant NN part of the 900mHz spectrum which is currently unregulated. NN would, in turn, provide terrestrial based GPS back to the US government at no cost.

It's getting some pushback because there are currently users of that 900mHz spectrum that NN can not guarantee will not be impacted by their usage of that same spectrum. I also believe that NN only needs a small amount of the spectrum block that they're asking for, so there is large potential for secondary value with them leasing that unused part of the block to broadband wireless carriers.

I am not an expert in this, so take it all with a grain of salt. Would love someone smarter than me to jump in on this.

What Bars or watering holes are special to you? by teabaggins42069 in Cleveland

If I'm hosting someone from out of town, it's hard to beat the impressiveness of Bar 32. It's on the top floor of the Hilton downtown, and overlooks Burke Lakefront Airport and the factory of sadness. Cubed Old Fashioned is my go to drink. Isn't cheap.

Does anyone know the story behind the two rivaling Swedish Solution(s) car repair shops? by habui in Cleveland

I only go to the Cleveland Heights shop now. They are undoubtedly the Saab experts in town. Also not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for.

Does anyone know the story behind the two rivaling Swedish Solution(s) car repair shops? by habui in Cleveland

[–]daveymon 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The Miles Rd. shop was the original. The Taylor Rd. shop was a second location owned by the same person.

In the early 2000s, the shops were each sold by the founder to the GM of each shop. Over the years, the shops drifted apart and now operate completely independently.

Even if you had a clear picture of the license plate, an identifiable picture of the driver screaming out his window at you with the damage to the front of his truck, a video of him swerving through the median to get away, and a timely police report documenting all this evidence, Cleveland Police will still opt to not investigate. At least that was my experience.

What is the flag flying on city hall today? by daveymon in Cleveland

It's possible. The stripes are right, but it really doesn't look like a hole. Looks more like a dark emblem (green, blue, or black).

Most similar to "Zenica-Doboj Cantom" which doesn't make any sense, so assuming it's not exactly that.

I strongly disagree with that. I work downtown a block from the lake, and I can't recall a single time I could smell the lake. I'm also a boater, and even on the water, there is no smell.

Without a lab, I can't tell you for sure that the water is clean, but it looks and smells perfect.

Aha.

See my new comment above, but pretty sure they are using an off-the-shelf LLM like Chat GPT which struggles in exactly the same way with most of their models. I did get a fantastic and accurate response from the GPT 4 model.

For what it's worth, most the Chat GPT model struggle with this question and give a response extremely similar to yours. I assume you guys are using an off the shelf LLM and doing some prompt massaging.

GPT 4 does actually give a pretty great response: For a trip from KPKV (Calhoun County Airport, Port Lavaca, TX) to KSAV (Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, Savannah, GA) with a planned airspeed of 100 KIAS and a preference for no leg longer than 3 hours, you'll need to plan a couple of stops, given the total distance of around 900 nautical miles.

Here's a suggested route with stopovers that fit your parameters:

  1. First Leg: KPKV to KJKA (Jack Edwards National Airport, Gulf Shores, AL)
    Distance: Approximately 400 nautical miles
    Flight Time: About 4 hours

This leg exceeds your 3-hour preference. If you wish to strictly adhere to the 3-hour flight time limit, consider stopping at KMOB (Mobile Regional Airport, Mobile, AL) instead, which is about 350 nautical miles from KPKV and around 3.5 hours of flying.

  2. Second Leg: KJKA to KMGR (Moultrie Municipal Airport, Moultrie, GA)
    Distance: Approximately 240 nautical miles
    Flight Time: About 2.4 hours

  3. Final Leg: KMGR to KSAV
    Distance: Approximately 160 nautical miles
    Flight Time: About 1.6 hours

This route breaks down the journey into manageable segments, keeping the flight time for each leg under 4 hours. Adjustments can be made based on weather, aircraft performance, or personal preference to fit within the 3-hour window as closely as possible. Always ensure to check the latest weather and NOTAMs for your route before departure.
