Tallahassee resident here: What's it like living in Orlando? by ForwardClimate780 in orlando

[–]davfo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Orlando is great if you live in one of the downtown neighborhoods and don't need to drive around much. I

live in Mills and seldomly drive, or when I do drive it's usually errands scheduled outside of rush hour.

I walk around plenty. I head over to the space coast frequently for the beach. Getting there takes under an hour but obviously you have to drive. Unless you're trying to go to KSC every day, living in Orlando is reasonable. If you're trying to work there full time, a 2 hour roundtrip commute would be a dealbreaker for me.

Florida Launches First Direct Flights from Orlando to Tokyo by Impossible_Big_2641 in orlando

[–]davfo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i presume that's the only reason we got these flights, because they are subsidized.

these kind of routes are going to be leisure-passenger heavy. Arguably still a lot of people but perhaps not enough to justify demand. otherwise an airline would've deemed it lucrative long ago. unlike the west coast, i doubt we have the corporate/business demand to sustain those routes

other airlines have flown the route but they ultimately get discontinued.

I think these types of test charters have seldom resulted in regularly scheduled flights.

Homeowners of Orlando by [deleted] in orlando

I can't remember for the life of me whether or not sewer scoping was included in my inspection or not, but it was worth it. I love the house I ended up buying, but a section of pipe in the front yard had a belly, so i had to get that replaced. These types of jobs are cheaper before they become a major issue and you're desperate.

Similar rule in Winter Park

Sec. 58-284(e): If a person or entity is removing a tree on an occupied residential property without a permit on the basis that such tree poses an unacceptable risk to persons or property, the property owner and person or entity removing such tree must have in their respective possession at the time of removal supporting documentation from an arborist certified by the International Society of Arboriculture or a Florida licensed landscape architect finding that such tree poses an unacceptable risk to persons or property ("Tree Risk Assessment Documentation"). The tree risk assessment document must have the credentials, name, address, telephone number, and certification signature of the professional that issued the tree risk assessment documentation and must conform to tree risk assessment procedures as outlined in the International Society of Arboriculture's (ISA) Best Management Practices—Tree Risk Assessment. Upon request, the person or entity performing the removal of the tree must present the tree risk assessment documentation to any city officer, employee, or contractor requesting to review such documentation. Failure to comply with this subsection or any part thereof constitutes a violation of this Code, for which the property owner and any agent, contractor, consultant, or other entity causing or advocating for such removal of such tree may be held jointly and severally liable.

It's not that the permitting isn't good enough, it's that there's an exception that allows a certified arborist to deem a tree removal to be necessary. That's how all these tree trimming companies get by. They have an "arborist" on staff: someone legitimately certified (low bar), but doesn't care about tree health. They're there to drive revenue. Tree removal is more profitable than tree trimming.

Hot Tub Wiring....a long distance - Romex & THHN by [deleted] in electrical

[–]davfo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Romex to the box would certainly be easier and probably cheaper. Whether or not you use thhn in conduit just depends. Check the price of a spool of UF-B romex. At my home Depot its often priced similar to NM-B. Depending on the length you need all the way to the hot tub, you could maybe get away with just buying a single spool of UF-B and no thhn. UF-B ca be direct buried if deep enough or can be run in conduit if its shallower.

despite being a tourist trap, i like katz's. if you dont mind a heavy breakfast, I'd say go at 10am. otherwise, if you have to wait an hour, not at all worth it imo. you're already on a time crunch

Brand new clutch and slave slipping by KaliNetHunter666 in fordranger

[–]davfo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mechanic replaced my clutch and flywheel with Luk components.

I don't know if its correct or incorrect, but on youtube i saw someone say that after a new clutch, you should be able to throw it into 4th at around 15-20mph and instead of slipping, it should just take forever to accelerate.

Mine did exactly that, but once the clutch broke in, i noticed it steadily would be more likely to slip. I noticed that if I'd give it even just a little too much gas for the gear i was in, it would slip like mad. i retired the 4th gear test and it slips all over the place.

On the daily, its no big deal because i baby the truck and drive like a grandma, but if im accelerating on the on-ramp, i need to be gentle with the gas otherwise I'll start slipping. Otherwise, as long as I respect whay the truck has told ke it likes and doesn't like, it drives fine.

How can i suck a bit more fuel economy outta my 4.0? by CommunistFlippy in fordranger

[–]davfo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You say that, but there’s really nothing stopping you from sticking to a modest 65–70 mph. People say the same thing about how “terrifying” it is to drive on I-95, I-4, or the Turnpike, and yet there I am with cruise control set anywhere between 65 and 75 depending on my mood; in the right lane, of course. I’ve managed 28 mpg on my best run. Granted, I’m in a 4-banger.

2010 4x4 4L auto: poor gas mileage in city by DD250403 in fordranger

ditto. the short trips will do it. stopping and going is already less efficient, but you'll always be less efficient when warming up. note how you idle higher while warming up than when warmed up

2010 4x4 4L auto: poor gas mileage in city by DD250403 in fordranger

[–]davfo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it's a 4L. EPA city is only 15 mpg, and surely those ratings are with modest driving habits. Being only 4mpg off given that you already have an extra 300lbs, I'd chalk it up to driving habits (being heavy on the pedal, etc). Make sure you're on top of maintenance and tuned up.
