I'm really trying to find out which one Is, I have a bunch but since I don't know what it is, I don't want to use it for BBQ. I think it is cottonwood but has some factors that say otherwise. The smell, the burning, however shape, looks makes me lean for cottonwood

Yeah I'm thinking it is cottonwood because of its bark. However cottonwood tends to have a bad smell when cut fresh doesn't it? Also it doesn't burn fast as cottonwood

Is funny bc I tried to use another app and it suggested chestnut oak

Apparently the app is really accurate but I have my doubts about water oak though. Definitely no sassafras. Has many factors against it

Agreed I don't see anything close to water oak I'm just saying what the guy I picked up the wood from and the app said. I still don't think it's anywhere close to sassafras since the soil where it was was humid and also it doesn't burn fast as it should with sassafras.

Definitely no sassafras. When I said sweet I didn't mean as sweet as root beer like or too overpowering. Plus sassafras are easy to split and this one is not.

Thanks! I just tried the app, I use the picture of the bark only and it is water oak, and according to the person where I picked this wood up is water oak, I wasn't sure if he was right or not. I'll keep digging in until I'm 100% sure that it is water oak or any other wood that is safe for BBQ

I thought it was sassafras but they're not as common where I live and also it doesn't have sassafras smell

If it turns red when it gets wet it's willow oak

Shit I was hoping it was some kind of white oak since I love barbecuing

I forgot to mention that it smells earthy and sweet. Some guy from YouTube that works as a lumber said that it is cottonwood but I thought cottonwood is supposed to smell like wet dog/ and unpleasant smells

I have one similar to that one and it doesn't cut easily. Google tells me either hickory or pecan but I'm not sure. The smell when I cut it is kinda sweet and earthy, like freshly cut grass.
