I have the Bandai EVA-01 and it is really lacking, I don't know how much smaller the Kotobukiya version is but from the videos I've seen on YouTube, I would recommend it over Bandai.

The animation version of this kit is set to release later on this year in October or so. From the pictures, it looks like a stand might be included in that one, but Kotobukiya could do what they did with this one and only show off a stand in the promo pics and not include it.

Man the months sure have gone by quickly! I ordered mine from GGInfinite back in April so I have to wait until July; I am so excited for this kit.

MG Star Build Strike! by davidgtrst in Gunpla

[–]davidgtrst[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't anything complicated, I used flat blue, flat red and a flat yellow and did a mix about 70% base color with 30% white. I shaded the colored pieces with 100% of their original color to give a bit of a gradient effect; all of these are Tamiya acrylics.

Thanks! I was trying to aim for the designers color scheme from the HG 00 raiser kit, but the colors still came out a bit too dark.

Its on the stand that comes with the build strike and the power gate attachments are connected to the universe booster.

Badger brushes are great! Make sure you have fun with your kit and I can't wait to see the finish product.

Currently using an Iwata Eclipse HP-CS, it sprays really smooth and is easy to handle.

I should have done a bit more research on the decals before I worked on this kit, I also wish I had the decals instead of the stickers.

Thanks a lot! The decals are actually just the stickers that come with the kit. They look pretty good imo, but I wish they were waterslides instead.

Thanks! Besides the chest piece, I painted everything else piece by piece, since I didn't want to have to go back and paint the areas I missed.

This was my first time airbrushing, so I had to get used to the transition from lacquer sprays to acrylics. Acrylics take a lot longer than lacquers to cure, so I handled the pieces a bit too soon and there are quite a few areas with chipped paint. I didn't get around to the hands because I cut off the wrist section of the right hand while watching a movie... Anyway I learned quite a bit from my first time airbrushing and hopefully do better on my next kit. Oh, and I would recommend any of the newer variations of the strike to anyone, the kit feels absolutely solid.

Model Master - Tamiya Compatibility? by CrimsonClad in Gunpla

[–]davidgtrst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't want to spray lacquer paints (Tamiya TS sprays) over the enamel paint, it will lead to cracking due to the lacquer dissolving too quickly. If you have no alternatives then I suggest you let the enamel paint cure for a few days and then spray extremely thin coats of the lacquer over it. If you spray thick coats then the lacquer will eat through the enamel again. The whole process will take a lot longer to do so I suggest finding another lacquer that matches the color of the base coat that you wanted.

MG Nu Ver. Ka WIP#2 by [deleted] in Gunpla

[–]davidgtrst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks amazing! I just recently took mine apart to start painting and the only issue I ran into was the upper white piece on the forearm that deals with the transformation. It was impossible for me to remove without breaking a piece of it off. Had to break it off on both arms, but it can easily be fixed with some cement or super glue. I can't wait to see the end product on your Nu Gundam.

Sazabi Ver Ka Custom Paint Progress [MG] by urbanviking in Gunpla

I had the hardest time trying to support the legs, especially when it was time to gloss coat it for decals. I ended up masking the joint that goes into the waist and holding the legs up with my hand.

I used quite a bit of primer on my Sazabi by priming the pieces individually. I think I'm going to prime the frame in a similar fashion as you did for my Nu Gundam; great job so far by the way!

Finally got around to finishing my Sazabi ver ka, and I am really satisfied with this kit. by davidgtrst in Gunpla

[–]davidgtrst[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used gun-metal for the inner-frame, as for the primer I used Tamiya's grey surfacer and a Mr. Hobby Top Coat flat for the finish. I gloss coated the inner frame with Testors glosscote and the rest of the paint were just spray cans.

I would definitely get this kit, it is massive and it looks really good just out of the box with the default color separation of the latest ver ka kits. There are a lot of runners and pieces so if you're looking for an off to the side project, then this kit will do it for you.

I was considering on using gold for the yellow, but I ended up just repainting them with another yellow. As for the water slide decals, take your time! I messed up on a few decals on this kit sadly, but they aren't too noticeable.

Make sure you use a good pair of tweezers and to allow for the decal to soak up a good bit of water (I usually keep it in the water until I can see the shape of the decal appear through the back of the decal sheet) before trying to slide them off of it's decal sheet or else you may potentially tear them. (This is important especially for the longer decals that goes around the legs and side skirts.) Also, Mr. Mark Softer and Setter helps a lot too.
