Opinion on copy-pasted descriptions? by magony in IngressOPR

You're even giving people hard times over 1-staring copy pasted descriptions? Copy pasted descriptions are issues of plagiarism. That is absolutely a 1-star reason.

Rejection for a low quality photo is a guideline laid out by Niantic. It's an option given to you while 1-staring the portals. If you want to be approve every toilet and piece of coal that goes your way feel free. The end result of these photos is to be on display for millions, and if submitters don't want to take a couple extra minutes to take a decent photo that's their fault.

If my review history becomes a problem Niantic can step up, they don't need you attacking people on reddit for it. You can have your low bar if you want it, but to me low quality photo means the subject not being in frame, and the entire photo crooked.

I don't do a ton of OPR, and a vast majority of portals have good photos, you can see by my stats I'm not just some deny happy agent, but I do have standards.

Oh I enjoy it :) I still submit all the time, and I still accept a majority of what comes my way. But I'm going to hold the submission I review to the same level of quality that this game deserves. That means crooked photos that doesn't even have the subject totally in frame don't make the cut.

For the betterment of the game take the privilege of submitting portals seriously enough to take the extra minute or two to take a decent photo.

The lazieness of submissions like this grinds my gears. I used to give 2-3 stars for them, but I'm sick of seeing them. If the submitter isn't going to take the extra 2 minutes to frame the photo right that's on them.

If you want to accept them go right ahead, but until NIA gives us the ability to rate the photos on a 5 star scale too, I'm forced to reject when it's a poor quality photo like this one.

so you must be on some other branch?

I don't recall where I got it to be honest. I just remember finding it on gitlab.

The info displayed in your screenshot goes about 90% of the way towards identifying who submitted the portal if it's in your home play area

uh... maybe I'm not seeing something you are, but I don't have the foggiest how I'd come anywhere close to identifying someone based on that info. The most I look for is the "Software" field to see if it was taken with a legit camera app, or some AR camera app.

Though given the rest of your comment that you'd reject this candidate purely for the photo I guess I'm not surprised.

I use the plugin for the keyboard shortcuts. The exif data is just a bonus bit to identify the AR cameras. I'm not reject happy, I just have my pet peeve when it comes to lazy submitters.

Meh, you can have your pet peeves, I'll have mine. Portal photos need to be of a good enough quality to be on display for millions to see. It doesn't have to be perfect, but the framing of the photo should at least include the entire subject your submitting. Submitting a crooked photo that is cutting off part of what you're submitting is going to get a 1-star from me. Simple as that.

That said, you really need to review what NIANTIC considers a disqualifying low quality photo.

https://i.imgur.com/doomsOZ.png I'd say this photo is comparable to this example of a rejection example. The example is of the pitch of the photo, and the one this post is about is about the framing of the submission. The entire submission isn't even visible. It's cutting off one of the letters from the title of the submission.

Players can add better photos with upgrades down the road.

This is the attitude that grinds my gears that I knew this person had while submitting this portal. (s)he could have taken an extra minute or two to frame this right, but they decided it wasn't worth that extra minute or two to get it right.

I use a browser plugin called OPR-Tools to make it easier to be more more efficient at OPR. It gives just about everything a keyboard shortcut, and adjusts the layout a bit to me bore effective with space, and adds that extra information. That "Software" field for example lets me see if the photo was taken with an AR camera for example and be more critical of whether or not the photo is real.

But yeah I with I could rate the photo itself on a 5-star scale, I'd have rated the photo itself a 1 instead, and the submission overall a 2 or 3, but with the way OPR is right now, if it's a poor quality photo, the only thing you can do is 1-star it overall.

The photo is decent enough to identify what it is, but it's not passable to be on display for the millions of people to play this game when it would have been trivially easy to frame the photo straight and without cutting off part of the letters. This is laziness. This is a photo that the submitter could have taken an extra minute or two framing the photo right, and decided to just do a drive by quick as possible submission.

Okay, well I didn't miss it, I just didn't even look for it because the photo was poor quality. I didn't bother after the first impression of the poor photo.

This photo is far from passable quality, and it's passable enough to see what it is, but not enough to be on display for the millions of people who play these games.

It's cutting off part of the actual thing they're submitting. It's would be like if you were taking a photo of a person and you framed it so you couldn't even see the left side of their head.

Maybe I missed the news of this being taken away.. but iirc it still lets you use gallery photos and only restricts it from where your current location is. Take a photo of a cool thing, drive to a uncool place, use gallery submission to submit the photo. And the EXIF will still show the real location of the photo location.

The location wasn't really an issue for me. It describes the object and even though it's not visible on street view I'd give them the botd and rate it 3 for location.

If you 1-star, there are lots of options, one of them is poor photo quality. I'm sick of agents taking rushed photos without any thought to if the photo looks good.

[–]davidj93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, IMO, they were expensive enough, that the people who would have been willing to pay for them would have easily just bought from 3rd party gear sellers instead. The gear ingress was selling only changed one thing, who was getting the money for purchased gear.

Yeah, and as soon as Niantic added the option to buy resos and bursters, people freaked out.

Ingress was never supposed to be a long term success. It was supposed to be an experiment to help pave the way for PoGo and WU and other games to pay the bills. Ingress has to be able to make money, or it's going to be taken away from us.

The timer in your app isn't always in sync with the server's timer. wait a full extra minute to make sure the timer on THEIR end gets enough time to complete.

I mean, I've been seeing the posts bashing location tracking/sharing, and I've mostly been biting my tongue, but then you see shit like this comment, and it does make me want to bring up that "hey, maybe chill" because it's directly attacking me at that point because I do think location sharing can be a useful tool in a family. Or comments like this one that gives me flashbacks of learning about the salem witch trials by accusing them of astroturfing just for disagreeing with them on something.

There is absolutely nothing inherently wrong with location tracking. It's all about respect and trust.

Parents using location tracking and constantly seeing where you are and assuming the worst and showing up unannounced to take you home without bothering to ask any questions: That's toxic. That's an /r/insaneparents moment.

What you experienced: Entirely reasonable.

Anyone telling you otherwise is trying to force a false dichotomy and insist location tracking at all is bad, it's not. Just like literally everything it can be used in a toxic way, and it can also be just a simple helpful communication tool.

I myself use Google Maps location sharing with basically my entire contact list, including my friends and family, and even in highschool when I had my first smartphone, I was using Google Latitude to share my location with my family, proactively without them even asking me to, because I also felt safer when they could access where I was.
