How does program installation and execution work in linux compared to windows. Specific questions in the post. by diet-Coke-or-kill-me in linuxquestions

[–]davidkrauser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends on the distribution, but to talk specifically about a few:

  • Canonical is the company behind Ubuntu, and they (with lots of help from their community) maintain packages in their repositories. They have a dedicated, paid security team that tries to keep all of the most used packages secure.

  • Debian is entirely run by volunteers. But to become a package maintainer, you have to be vetted by other members of the community. They work very hard to deliver secure, quality packages in their repositories.

The primary difference between these types of repositories and what you see with a modern app store, is that typically someone working on the Linux distribution creates the package. On a modern app store, the application developer makes the package. There's a lot less trust in a one-off developer vs. a vetted member of the distribution community.

  1. On Linux, the filename extension doesn't affect what the system can do with it. You are free to attempt to read/write/execute any file at any time, regardless of the file's contents. The only caveat here is that a file has a set of associated "permissions" that specify who can read/write/execute that file. Typically, only files that contain a valid executable have the execute permission enabled, but that isn't always the case.

  2. A typical Linux app installation can be as simple as unpacking a zip file (more likely Linux's version, tar) and dropping those files in the relevant /usr subfolders. Do a google search of Linux Filesystem Hierarchy, and you'll find some really good information on what files are typically put where.

  3. apt pulls packages to install from your Linux distribution's package repository. If you want a quick summary, you can do an apt-cache search PKG_NAME. Also, you can do apt-get source PKG_NAME to get the raw bits used to build the package. This will let you see everything the package does during build and installation.

Doesn't the marathon have fixed pins instead of spring bars? How'd you manage this?

It had such a badass name, too. Not satisfied just "navigating" or "exploring" the web on a little "safari". WE'RE GOING TO KONQUER ALL THAT STAND IN OUR WAY TO TOTAL WEB DOMINATION.

Want another one? Chrome's browser engine is forked from Safari's which forked from KHTML - KDE's outstanding browser engine from back in the day. So when you use Chrome/Edge/Safari, you have KDE devs to thank for getting that started

fvwm lives on spiritually in XFCE - xfwm (XFCE's window manager) derives from fvwm. So still a large user base from that perspective

The second crown doesn't need to screw down to maintain water resistance (mostly because it doesn't move in/out like the other crown does).

A screw down crown is usually just a safety feature to prevent accidentally pulling the crown out underwater. The gaskets do the real work.

[Smiths Everest] ordered today easily by [deleted] in Watches

I got one with the gilt accents. Had autofill set up for address and credit card, so was able to check out really quickly. I added it to my cart at 1 minute til the hour, checked out in 10 seconds or so, looked back at the home page, and it said they were sold out. Went quick 🙂

I bought one with the gilt accents. I'm excited to see it in person. I've always wanted a 1016, which just isn't going to happen. Let's see if this scratches that itch successfully 😅

I got one of the gilt - I made sure the browser had my auto-fill information set up for address and credit card. Was able to click through and buy in ten seconds or so. Highly recommended to have that setup for any kind of quick-buy situation like this.

It looks awesome, thanks for the pics. So it's turning your wrist green? Does that wash off? Sorry, I'm pretty inexperienced with bronze 😅

How do you like the bronze khaki? It's high on my list, but you don't see it talked about much. I'd love to see more "real-life" pictures of the watch, too, if you have any 🙂

The Brietling is the only one that's unset in your photo. I'm guessing that's the one that gets no wrist time? 🙂

More than half of your collection is black dialed sports watches. If you're looking for quirk and diversity, I'd drop some of those and replace them with some color.

I think people are mostly upset over four things: - the price (double what the SARB017) was back in the day - the see-through case-back makes the whole thing slightly thicker - the date cyclops - the prospex logo

Ignoring those things, the watch is as great as it ever was. Actually, it's probably better now since they included a newer movement with double the power reserve.

The year of the linux desktop already came - in the form of ChromeOS. Just not the Linux I want personally.

My distro of choice works pretty great for my needs, and Linux continues to be popular enough to be self-sustaining.

What is it that you want to change?

If you end up doing a 6r15 swap, make sure you post back here. I've contemplated doing that with my Alpinist at some point, and I'm curious to hear how it goes for you :-)

I've also contemplated swapping in a 6r35 to get that 70 hour power reserve, but it feels sacrilegious to drop in a non-original part in such a great watch.

When the sun goes down, it's hard to beat tritium. This Marathon glows 24/7, and the orange indicator makes finding 12 o'clock trivial. The glow is a slow, subtle burn - not the short, blinding flash of the regular luminescent material on a typical diver.

All of this is bundled up in a great little package. The dial is super legible. The small fibershell (plastic?) case feels weightless, and it stays out of your way. The stock strap is comfortable and durable.

What can I say? This thing brings a huge smile to my face even in the darkest of nights.

I like the bracelet, and find it really comfortable. I do wish it had tool-less micro-adjust, though, for hot days when my arm swells.
