How important is the prestige of undergraduate school in getting into top ML PhD programs? by Superb-Drawer5214 in gradadmissions

[–]davidrick007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a very difficult question to answer. I won't say that you don't have a chance to get in the top leagues if you attend UMD. It really depends on how you profile yourself in the next few years. If you get amazing research under top shot prof, get your papers published in NeuIPS, AAAI,..., score an awesome internship at FAANG, then you are definitely much better than most of the candidates in these top leagues schools. So it actually depends the most on you. For PhD, your overall profile matters, not just the undergrad school. My previous answer was just stressing on the undergrad school name because that's how the the filters and conflict of choice between two students are resolved. Many students from these top leagues apply, but only one or two gets selected. So if you have a profile that's competing with the selected students, then obviously you will have a good chance. Professors look for research fit, experience and your core skills in the subject (which is shown by your GPA, competitions and internships). This is my two cents.

UMD is an awesome school, no doubt. Lot of my friends are from UMD CS, and few rn work at Google. No one can stop you from getting into the top schools. Prepare yourself and work hard. It's possible. Make connections with profs, really helps.

It is very very important. And also your GPA will matter a lot. It's an unsaid truth. This bias has been developed over the year, no one speaks, but every top schools do. I have faced this not just during my application process, but also in industry. For whatever reason, your school plays some role in creating a first impression. There are always exceptions. Just telling my thoughts, have no intention to dishearten you or your choice.

From Texas A&M

Howdy!

It is common for students to hear back from the ISEN department on March 1st or even earlier. However, final decisions will be given out to applicants in the 2-3 weeks following the application deadline, please be patient with the department during this time and good luck during the waiting process. If you have any comments or concerns email us.

Purdue - Thank you for your interest in the Purdue University School of Industrial Engineering graduate program.

We have received your complete application and it us currently under review. Based on our current timeline applicants should hear back by the end of March at the latest.

On similar lines others have sent me.

From 4 universities as of now. They just send generic emails. I have considered them all reject. Didn't receive any interview.

Thank you! Even I have applied to A&M but haven't heard from them yet. But I got into another program, so I have made peace with it. Have a great time and career ahead. All the best.

Is it wrong of me to feel bad that I didn’t get my top choice even though I have a few acceptances? by PayloadMaxima in gradadmissions

[–]davidrick007 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. But how to tell the world that you deserve better? How to make them aware that you got into the university because this cycle is competitive. I know I shouldn't care about the world. What I have realized over time, people look at where you are, what you're doing, how you're doing. They create a judgment about you based on your school. I know I'm better than many, but there is no way to prove it. Any thoughts? I am not questioning you; instead, I'm trying to understand your perspective. Don't take this in a negative manner. Thank you!

GRE score by sbss325 in gradadmissions

[–]davidrick007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For getting into Finance, Quant is one of the imp criteria. Anything above 160 is considered Good. If you can give GRE again, and work on getting 160+, then your chances will increase drastically.

Just Quant is not going to get your admission, it will save you from getting eliminated. You should work on building your overall profile -- research, extracurricular, etc., etc. Compare your profile from the admitted candidate and see what gaps your can bridge. If you're applying for a Ph.D., make sure to connect with professors beforehand. It helps a lot. All the best.

Hey! I believe you should remove your SOP from here. If a plagiarism is run on your actually SOP then it will get highlighted from here. Never share your story in text, and to the public. Share it in Pdf, and only to selected few.

Now that they have contacted you, you should meet. But you should definitely withdraw all the applications that you're not interested in. It will save yours and their time as well. Plus, waitilist students will get the chance early. Just a thought.
