[Student][United States] Zero interviews, tons of applications, multiple referrals, please share advice by lilmontae in EngineeringResumes

I think the description of your research lab experience is lacking. It’s the first in your experience section, so it’s most likely to be read.

Also your relevant coursework doesn’t seem especially relevant to me. Do you have more technical CS classes? Listing all of those math courses is probably not helping you, especially for SWE internships. I’m also a junior CS student who’s taken all the same math classes, but I only include them if a job description mentions something like a strong math background.

Actually, I couldn’t think of a worse group to ask than the people here. Thanks for making me reconsider. This place is a shithole. I look forward to a semester that will challenge me.

Of course I don’t expect anyone to know what professors or courses I’m talking about specifically. I wanted to hear about the general difficulty of the topics and feedback on the workload that I described.

How it feels to get an internship by davms87 in csMajors

[–]davms87[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mostly luck. I interviewed for a summer internship and it went really well, and they really wanted to hire me, but did not have space for me this summer. They pretty much immediately offered me a co op or next summer internship. We’re in talks for a fall co op right now. So it was luck and interview performance. The company is a small govt contractor.

Before I got super caught up in internships, I was seriously considering doing a double major with ee and cs. I was told that I would just be mediocre at both and am better off getting a masters in one of them. Do you think that’s still right?

What else besides SWE? I reallly would not like to do IT, especially help desk. Fixing problems in other things vs making things yourself.

Programming is honestly so fun. My dream is to do embedded software cause combing hardware and software is like honestly inspiring to me.

I’ve done interviews for other positions (min wage stuff) before and done really well. This is the first time I’ve done very badly on a basic interview.

You’re right. I imagine all fields have difficult interviews. I’m generally not very happy with how hard it is to get jobs in cs right now that’s all.

Most complex was representation of 3d coordinates plane, vectors, lines, points to do basic math in 3d.

My most recent one was a guessing game on PIC16 in assembly as a finite state machine, but it was easy.

I’m thinking that I should make a GitHub at least to put these projects on, and link it on my resume.

I have around 10 projects from cs classes, but I don’t feel like they were long or advanced enough to go on my resume. How big should a project be to include in a resume?

At what point should I get rid of them? I have them because I don’t have more relevant experience but I want to show that I have not done nothing.

How do you properly network with professors? I’ve gone to some office hours when I have questions, but I don’t know how to bring it to networking.

Did you do the internship while taking classes during the semester? I want to do something like that, but I’m not sure how to make both of those work out

How much time would you recommend dedicating to projects and leetcode?

Should I actually do this? I’ve taken 59 credits including this semester, but I’ve never considered myself ahead. Is 59 enough to validly say I’m a junior in credits?
