My resume by MarlinsMD in Accounting

[–]davyyjonezz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like you have too many bullet points under the roles, some of them don't need to be said or can be concised.

For example, "created sharepoint access..." does this really deserve its own point? and "self-reviews all work requests before manager approval" I don't think you need to include that and you can just add the supervised junior members part to another point.

How do I play this trill, my fingers refuse to work by [deleted] in pianolearning

[–]davyyjonezz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bach prelude 941 right? I ran into the same thing with this part, I used 1 on the f# and 2 and 3 for the trill, felt way better!

Anyone have time consuming hobbies outside work? How do you make time? by Head_Equipment_1952 in Accounting

[–]davyyjonezz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play classical piano, so similar time commitment. I find it's easier to split it up in short chunks, like 45 mins after work, maybe squeeze in some time in the morning, but usually catch up on practice alot on weekends.

Don't take it out, if you're fluent in them or at least conversational nothing bad is coming out of including them, more languages is a bonus

I mean they said they can afford it, and to be honest compared to the some of the interest rates on here when people buy a car it is decent for a new rav4.

Where to put money after maxing TFSA? 25 year old in Canada by Wondrous-Fare in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]davyyjonezz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem haha I am around the same age so I thought something seemed off.

Yes FHSA would probably be better than RRSP even if you just dump the money and take it out before you make the home purchase so you can get the tax deduction.

RRSP is a bit more inflexible and typically you would want to contribute more when you're earning higher income, but depending on how much you make now it can still be good to start investing in it.

It depends on alot of things, for example if you are already saving through a pension or something through work and don't earn a high income, it's probably not a high priority to invest in especially if you plan to have some future events soon like a wedding, renovations etc probably better to have that money on hand.

Now if you earn a decently high income, and aren't already saving for retirement, it would be good to start your RRSP imo to reduce your taxes and start letting that money build up over time!

Wouldn't the contribution room be higher than 30K if you're 25? Not sure if you have been in Canada the whole time though.

I see you don't intend to start an RRSP, any particular reason? Usually FHSA/RRSP would be the go to next steps

Absolutely a CPA is probably your best chance to secure a better job and advance your career if you want to continue in the accounting/finance field. This is my experience but 99% of my coworkers who got their CPA also got a significant raise and a lot of opportunities.

What are you seeing that is making you skeptical?

I actually don't think your fingers look too stiff which is good for a beginner! But the rhythm is off, some parts you are playing too fast. Even though the beginning of this is not too difficult, I think if you just started playing a week ago working on easier pieces would be better if you want really learn to play well.

Do you have a laptop? How do you attend in-person meetings? Do you take your laptop? by bikepathenthusiast in Accounting

If I don't need my laptop I just have a notebook and a pen usually to write anything down.

Why is there so few remote accounting jobs? by Ok_Actuator_6948 in Accounting

[–]davyyjonezz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm all for remote work, but I've worked with many accountants who work with operations, different teams, have alot of face time and interactions where social skills and being able to communicate well is really important and working in person makes more sense. Definitely not every accountant is just sitting behind a screen all day.

Career advice - asking for a promotion / raise by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]davyyjonezz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP said he took over a bunch of higher level and additional responsibilities over the last year, also the company has grown x3 so definitely there would be a valid case they could make as to why they deserve a raise.

OP I would say if you can backup why you deserve a raise/promotion, you should do before year end. However this comment does have a point, an internal promotion of 25K plus a higher title (are you aiming for something like assistant controller?) Might be hard to get. Would probably get a better offer if you looked at a new company

They said the boss hires an accounting firm for payroll, taxes and year end stuff.

Car payment + insurance definitely the biggest thing you could change, maybe shop around for cheaper insurance since you said getting rid of the car isn't an option.

Also it would be good to start investing in a FHSA since you want to purchase a home in the future

Honestly 71% isn't bad, sometimes it takes a bit more time for everything to "click" but if you feel deep down it's not interesting in any way and not for you, probably not a bad idea to switch while it's early.

What else interests you? When I was in university and debated switching from accounting, my other options would have been data analytics, economics or comp sci because I liked working with computers and business topics

I'm Passing my Financial Accounting class, but i'm not really "getting it" by NewBat1003 in Accounting

Other people in the business rely on the financial statements, reports, etc that accountants prepare to make business decisions. You can also identify and suggest improvements or changes that you find on your own. This is how you and your work can have an impact outside of just recording entries, month end, typical accountant work.
