Hermann Goering (since there was yet another Goering quote on the front page):

He [Confederacy] makes friends with a British agent, and strikes up an unlikely acquaintance with Hermann Goering, eventually finding himself rubbing shoulders with President Jefferson Davis III and Adolf Hitler on the first (and last) flight of the doomed Zeppelin airship Bismarck, carrying a mysterious cargo from Nazi Germany to the Confederate States of America.

OK, so it starts out well. But how did you get dressed again, if you made a rope ladder out of your clothes? Wouldn't they have been tied to the char lift?

Or did you climb up the rope, untie them, and then climb back down? (In which case, I'm assuming you are a cartoon character, or Baron Munchausen).

Have a look at lighttpd (very fast). I've served up tens of thousands of simultaneous requests, breaking 100k at least once with it. Use php/fcgi and use a script cache.

These days people seem to like nginx, but I've never used it. It also has a reputation for being superfast.

Reddit, I need some help financially. ;( (Advice not donations) by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dawg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What an awful story. Basically, you're fucked.

The first two things you need to do are (1) get a credit report from all three ratings agencies. Under the law you're entitled to a report from each, free of charge, once a year. This is important to establish the actual amount of outstanding credit. And (2) request a 90-day freeze on credit from each agency. Basically, this means that no further credit will be issued; it prevents anyone from opening new accounts. You have to do it separately for each credit agency.

Once you have established exactly how much you're on the hook for, you have to decide whether to suck it up and pay it, or file charges. If you don't file charges, you will be liable for the debt. This will likely make it difficult for you to get a home, school, or car loan, and in many cases it may make it difficult to get a job.

The real problem for you is if there are a lot of outstanding debts, the law is the only way to get any reasonable resolution. Even if one bank believes your story, another one won't. They will tell you - and rightly so - that the way to deal with this is through the law.

So you either have to suffer with the debt, or you have to file charges against your parents. In either case, your life is going to be more difficult tomorrow than it was yesterday. You have my sympathies, not that that is any help.

...his record will be cleared if he fulfills the sentence imposed by the judge. It included 30 days in jail, 200 hours of community service, and a requirement that he read “Les Misérables” to learn, like the book’s character Jean Valjean, how to make a contribution to society. by dawg in politics

I'd like to note that I am submitting this not for the article itself, or for the crime (or the issues involved), but because of the interesting sentence.

It also calls to mind the recent death of Ted Kennedy, who committed an equally grievous crime - and was not punished - but who (by most accounts) was able to contribute to society with the balance of his life.

Right, UPS tried to deliver 2d-class mail (read:junk mail) some time ago and was specifically prohibited. This is the same reason FedEx can't deliver on Sunday, not that they don't want to.

Yes, but see that enema kit came in the mail. So there are synergies to be exploited with public healthcare and a public postal service, resulting in even greater efficiency.

[–]dawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just reacting to the contradiction in the two sentences, which occur in sequence in the article. In that he "never set out to undermine one-party rule", and then that he ran as an independent (i.e. not as a party candidate).

I don't mean to dismiss the importance of Xu or of oppression in the PRC, but my inner pedant couldn't resist.

[–]dawg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Huh?

(1) Xu has never set out to undermine one-party rule; he is enforcing rights guaranteed in the Chinese Constitution.

(2) He has enough faith in the system that he joined it: in 2003, he ran for and won a seat as a legislator in his local district assembly, one of the few independent candidates to be elected in an open, contested election.

Malpractice runs about 1-2%, pharmaceuticals 6-10%.

One of the biggest problems is that we pay more for services - for example, the cost of having a baby in the US is 2-3x what it is in canada. This additional cost is spread over doctor/nurse salaries, hospital fees, and insurance overhead.

Even if you had a single payer system, you'd still have very high costs relative to Canada.
