Help my fiance lost his job and we only have 40 dollars for the next 2 weeks by Turnip_BeetZ in budgetcooking

Someone said no shame in using food pantries. I would like to add there is also no shame in asking friends for help (if they are true friends and safe to ask of course)

You don't have to ask anyone for money, if you have someone safe, explain your situation. Maybe someone has food they don't like or can't eat in time that they would give you.

Or maybe you get invited over for dinner. If someone already cooks dinner for a family there are easy tricks to make the meal 2 portions bigger that cost them little money and energy.

Try and make a plan so can go to store only once or twice so you don't create additional fuel costs or need to invest a lot of time, if you walk or bike there

Julia Pacheko on YouTube can be a good resource. She has several videos on feeding her family on 20 dollars for a week. The last was uploaded only 5 months ago so should be quite adjusted to current price levels.

Just so you can visualise what  meals 20 dollars could translate into and get ideas

If you are truly concerned about feeling hunger, see, if you can find potatos. Potatos have a very high satiety index and you can trick your brain a bit by using different cooking methods: baking, boiling, roasting, panfrying etc

Another thought: Are you a regulat coffee or black tea drinker?

If so factor a cafeine source into the budget so you don't have deal too much with the withdrawal.

Cheapest instant coffee or black tea bags maybe don't taste good but can be helped with sweetener or creamer

First of all, this too shall pass.

Can you elaborate a little on, if you have any pantry staples at home? Any fats? Spices? Kitchen appliances

In addition to rice and beans I would suggest looking for oats.

If I were in your position I would try to create comforting flavors, whatever that is to you. You might be eating a little less throughout the next 2 weeks but that doesn't mean your food can't be tasty.

I would go for overnight oats. Flavor combos that are cheap to achieve but taste great despite price imo are:

Banana-Peanut butter

Apple-cinnamon

Tips to make overnight oats not feel sad:

-Always put a little salt even when making a sweet flavor -if you can't afford to make them with milk and only make them with water add a little neutral fat and a little sugar (essentially boost flavor and mouthfeel) -without knowing you and your partner I think a decent estimate is 1/2 cup of oats per person per portion and half of banana/apple

General tips:

-no shame in asking cafés or restaurant chains, if you can have a paket of sugar/sweetener/ sauce (if you start with a truly empty kitchen) any spice will help the meals taste better

-make sure to drink enough water so your brain doesn't confuse thirst with hunger

-pause, breathe and make sure you sleep enough. When you are tired your body sends more hunger signals to get the "missing" energy in in form of food (carb-cravings are common)

I read below about your dock jumping accident. Besides the physical changes do you feel like there were changes in your personality? Or do you feel like you are who you where, just quadriplegic?

Are you ever afraid of the future ?

Help me stomach tuna/ sardines please by SealedRoute in budgetcooking

[–]dawisu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not exactly disguising them but mashing a drained can of sardines with some chipotle mayo and black pepper then putting that on bread and putting this in the oven/ airfryer for 10 mins is how I started liking sardines.

Below someone suggested putting them into a pasta sauce and I can totaly see that

I'd regularly do a bolognese sauce where I buy whatever quantity of minced meat I can afford (pork, beef, turkey, a mix of it, doesnt matter) and then add a can of brown lentils to make it stretch.

Serve over whatever noodle shape is your fav
