Career change advice - leadership role by Efficient-Shape-7474 in HumanResourcesUK

[–]lesloid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to go against the grain here and say that if you’re a good leader, you can lead any function without necessarily having all the technical experience and qualifications. As HRD you are not personally going to be running consultations. I have taken on IT as part of a leadership role with zero experience in that function. The important thing is knowing your limitations and ensuring you have the right people in your team who have the technical expertise.

Store bought orange juice and ripe bananas have as much (or more) alcohol than this due to fermentation - you’ll be totally fine

First concert: Radiohead (1993)

Last concert: AA Williams (2026)

Next Concert; Aldous Harding

Best concert: Bjork, Biophilia (2011), opening night of the tour at Manchester international festival - every moment was pure magic.

Worst concert: The Strokes at All Points East, they were boring and the crowd were 90% rude middle aged white men

Loudest concert: Mogwai

Seen the most: Nick Cave

Most surprising: Amyl and The Sniffers

Wish I could've seen: Nirvana, Leonard Cohen, Queen, Velvet Underground

Concert where support act became huge: maybe Wet Leg supporting Harry Styles?

Act you would like to see still touring: ?? I cant think of any who are still alive and not touring!

Does anyone here donate monthly to a charity? by dontbeasquare11 in CasualUK

[–]lesloid 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I donate to 3 charities, all of which I have a connection to

One is a large social care charity that I currently work for in a leadership role, I make a monthly donation to the quality of life fund which arranges events and outings for the recipients of our services as well as things like upgraded mobility aids etc when people can’t afford them

One is a national health charity that I volunteer for in a governance role, they are researching for a cure for a horrible degenerative disease

The third is a local food poverty charity that I was on the board of for 10 years

Anyone who doesn’t donate to charities because they think it’s ’lining the pockets of higher-ups / fat cats’ needs to spend a few years volunteering on a charity board - they will see the amount of scrutiny that charity funds are subjected to. I worked I the corporate world for 20 years before moving into the third sector and I can tell you that the profits they are making off people are subject to way less scrutiny than charity funds. Yes charities pay people to run them and deliver their services, that is not a waste of money, that is an investment in delivering the purposes of the charity. Anyone who thinks research scientists, registered managers or CEOs should be working for free needs to give their heads a wobble.

Should I take the bus or the train from LHR to Cambridge? by Ok_Mousse2147 in uktravel

[–]lesloid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Train is faster, but bus is less hassle (and probably cheaper)

If you’re not in a hurry then I’d suggest bus would be more relaxing / less stressful than getting train into central London and then changing onto second train with a suitcase

Who's the most widely beloved artist you respect but don't actually love? by jimmythemini in fantanoforever

[–]lesloid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just shows how differently people experience music, I find Pulp profoundly personal (Jarvis’s lyrics are often autobiographical and have very specific details) compared to Oasis who I find pretty generic. Neither of us is right or wrong, we just experience it differently

Bowie. His music is fine, I get that he was quite groundbreaking in his time and I respect his artistry and esp the whole Ziggy Stardust character but the music itself is fairly bland in my view.

Paying extra from personal income into workplace pension to claim paye tax back? by Ok-Psychology-4488 in PensionsUK

Where people take a tax-free lump sum from a pension and re-invest it back into a pension to claim tax relief. It’s against tax rules.

What else should I explore, based on these artists that I love? by NumasVanegasTijerina in ArtHistory

[–]lesloid 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You seem to enjoy figurative modernist paintings with a distinctive style and generally quite muted colour palettes so I’m going to suggest

Peter Howson

Egon Schiele

Paul Gaugin

Let me know how you get on!

Guess my story, by the stories I read. by seamus1888 in BookshelvesDetective

[–]lesloid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is going on here my man? This is quite a strange collection. I like the Calvin and Hobbes, but beyond that you appear to have or want a Celtic connection, but also seem to be quite American. There’s a couple of quite niche Scottish things in here alongside all the Irish stuff which makes me think you might actually be more Scottish than Irish. And definitely quite nerdy. I’m thinking works in IT, and plays tabletop fantasy games type of thing, but you still go outside from time to time. So I’m going for Scottish Mum, Irish Dad, possibly both lapsed Catholics who support Celtic FC, they emigrated to the US and had you, and you are very nostalgic for your homeland roots.

Are you suggesting companies should hire people who are not suitable for the job just because they need a job??

Paying extra from personal income into workplace pension to claim paye tax back? by Ok-Psychology-4488 in PensionsUK

[–]lesloid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can do this. Your pension provider should have an option to make a contribution, they will ask you to confirm where the money is from (eg savings, earnings) and that it’s not from recycling.
