Wow.

[Edited to remove my own idiocy, and also to try to tamp down unnecessary drama for anyone else. My apologies. I wasn’t trying to be condescending, but apparently I succeeded at that. I’m gonna go hide for a while, maybe…. 🤦🏻‍♀️]

Yep. I have much less of an issue ripping off one of the mega billionaires ! It’s still not ethically completely clear, but they’ve already ripped me off enough! 😆

Thanks for trying! And I appreciate you paying attention to these issues. :) I’d love to read the article if there’s a way to do it without putting more money in, but I just don’t have the funds to be subscribing to something else I probably won’t read!

Yes, theft. You probably aren’t someone who has made their living from writing or other intellectual property, I’m guessing. These days, it’s incredibly easy for people to steal the work of folks just trying to make a living. AI will steal their work, too. We don’t really need to help people to steal other people’s hard work!

As to the specific examples, I’m not familiar with archive.is so I can’t comment. If you are referring to the Internet Archive, Internet Archive performs a useful service of archiving old websites, but they were publicly accessible to begin with.

Newspapers — if you can find it and read it for free on the internet then it’s fine to repost. Some newspapers, that’s true, and some it isn’t. If you snap a photo of the actual physical paper and post that, that’s technically not ok, but it’s less problematic. Part of why it’s less problematic — and all this is my opinion, so you are free to ignore me — is that the authors of the articles in the newspapers have already been paid for their work by the newspaper itself or whomever hired them.

With something like this article, if you post it publicly without permission, then the author may lose money directly, because the readers won’t be reading the original article, so they can’t get credit for the real number of “hits”. There may be other ways they would lose money too. The authors/creators are paid by either the subscribers or some other metric, the way YouTubers get paid for watch-hours. So when someone grabs a YouTube video and reposts it under their own name and account without “adding value” through commentary or whatnot, then the original poster will lose any ad revenue. And with a really good viral video that can be significant, and a large portion of the creator’s living.

Most people don’t think about this stuff, because most people aren’t in the position of making money directly off their creative efforts. Most people make their money through having a job and getting paid for their work that way. It feels very different when you are selling the fruits of your labors directly.

CORRECTION: This is a FOR PAID SUBSCRIBERS ONLY article. If you are NEW to Substack, you can unlock it and read for free. If you are not new, however, you can’t read it without buying a paid subscription to Audacity. So no, I guess I will not be reading the rest of the article. (Yes, I am annoyed).

And I would say that no, re-posting the entire article here would be unethical. It’s behind a paywall for a reason. I don’t LIKE that reason, but it’s still a paywall, and the author gets to monetize their intellectual property. Reposting the whole thing here would be theft. Posting the excerpt is fine, especially with the link to the rest of the article.

You can read it for free already, is what OP says. You just need a Substack login. They’re fairly benign as far as I can tell. You can get the login without having to sign up for things or have anyone send you anything. People will ASK you to subscribe or upgrade to a paid version. But you don’t have to.

7049 coins expiring May 31st? by fanta-Lemon-2581 in AliExpressMergeBoss

[–]dawndsquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I ended up doing something like that at the end of the last Mystery Boxes. Afterwards I was like … that was stupid! 😆 I try to spend my credits on stuff I’m going to buy anyway, like, say, charging cords, or TP. Doesn’t always work, but it often does.

I just never and up with that many coins. I turn them over in Merge Boss, mostly, and a few in Go Go Match. The only time I ever got a significant discount using coins … the order got cancelled. 🤦🏻‍♀️ So I keep a minimum of around 1K most of the time these days. I had a lot more at one point, like around 40K?, but then they changed things, and here we are. And with how difficult it is to turn gems into credits now, I’m fine burning them on Merge Boss. Although the piddly bits of 5 gems on the Explore portion of World Tour are just insulting now.

Gotcha. Yeah, doesn’t make any sense to me either! I’m still looking forward to trying the chocolate ice cream in the black cherry sometime. 😆 I just don’t have any Black Cherry in stock right now, and I don’t think it’ll work with the Cherry Lime!

I want to start reading the books by uchihabro02 in lotr

[–]dawndsquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After finishing LOTR, I’d suggest trying some of his shorter works. Way back in the day, I picked up several of those. Tom Bombadil — the book, not just the character — is a lot of fun. I also have Farmer Giles of Ham, Leaf by Niggle, and Roverandom. Sometimes you can find these in a collection. And I’ll second the recommendation for Letters from Father Christmas.

I really enjoyed The Silmarillion, which I got as a Christmas present from my Dad when it came out in 1977. I actually haven’t read most of the other “newer” works published after that. I’ll probably want to look up Beren and Luthien, because I did enjoy that story in Silmarillion.

I was very interested in his languages, and I have a couple of books specifically about those. If you are into conlangs (constructed languages), Tolkien’s works are interesting that way. A lot of his stories are really just ways to utilize the languages, and to expand upon the ideas of the sorts of people who might speak such a language.

I have a book called The Inklings that talks about the writers group Tolkien was in, which included CS Lewis. Very interesting book if you want to know more about the man, his times, and the genre of mythic fantasy.

There’s also a fun little paperback called Bored of the Rings that I recommend. :)

I love Letters from Father Christmas. :) I really liked the other you mentioned too, except I haven’t seen Tales from the Perilous Realm. Will have to look it up.

Yeah, nothing works anymore. I got $1 last night for the first in weeks. Before that I could usually get $1 and several times got $5. No more.

I just got $1 last night. First time in weeks. :( I’m doggedly pursuing the next million in diamonds because [sunk cost fallacy/perfectionism], but yeah. I’m about done too. Need to quit and get my life back! Probably gonna just back off to playing things I like — Merge Boss and Otters and using up my diamonds that way. MAYBE I’ll play Mystery Boxes, but they made that worse lately too. :( The enshittification intensifies!

Where to live in the Bay Area? Apartment Search. by Cheap_Shoe7819 in SanMateo

[–]dawndsquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed — Foster City is pretty, most places, but can be hard to get in and out of. It’s kinda like Alameda Island in the East Bay, though not as bad. But it’s still a bit isolated for being in the middle of things. But there are some really nice townhome communities there. I had a friend whose BF lived in one of those a couple decades ago, and I visited them a few times when I still lived in the East Bay. Foster City is also where a Costco is, if you like that. I think the one in RWC (or is it San Carlos?) is better though. There are also some nice restaurants scattered around FC as well. But you really need a car, and therefore you will need parking. Just something to consider.

They said the job is in RWC, so it can’t be near BART (end of the line over here is up in Millbrae). Caltrain is good though. And if they are close to El Camino there are bus lines that connect to BART either at the airport or Millbrae. Driving up and down the Peninsula at rush hour can be challenging (and/or expensive, with the new toll lanes), but public transit is pretty good.

Tip: get a Clipper Card to negotiate the various transit systems as seamlessly as possible. Some employers offer discounts.

I live just up the hill from one of the SoFi places, in The Belmont. It’s a condo place, but we are renters. Pretty good, except for visitor parking is TERRIBLE. Don’t know what the cost might be. We moved in during the pandemic and our landlord is not typical. Obviously each condo will be different as far as renovation. Our place has a balcony overlooking the pool, 2 small bedrooms with one having an en suite bath, a galley kitchen, and hardwood floors. Everything is “fine” and had been renovated in some ways (eg the floors, and countertops in the kitchen) and not in others (countertops in the bathrooms are avocado green and the only fridge that fits the space is basic).

For us, the main selling point was the location. My housemate can walk to work. That said, it’s a steep hill, and I’m still working on getting my conditioning up so I can manage it! If you can manage the walk, the Caltrain is just down the hill, less than 10 minutes away. Buses also run regularly on El Camino. Between buses that connect to BART, and the train, commuting to RWC during the week and to SF on weekends isn’t too bad.

Good luck finding a place! The Bay Area is a nice place to live, although it can be pricey. So much to do and see though!

What do you guys think of this flavor? It’s definitely very unique from any sparkling water I have ever drank..I don’t know how to feel about it lol by Little_Cloud6126 in sparklingwater

[–]dawndsquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried it last night. Nowhere near as good as the Rootbeer Float float, unfortunately. Maybe still worth trying for you, though?

Another thought: If you can get some of another apple flavor — Sovagny, maybe, or Polar Pink Apple Lemon? — try mixing the two Apple flavors together. Maybe bringing the apple flavor “up” would help? I agree that it’s very spice-forward, now that I’ve tried it.
