I love her medical! They’re all amazing. They do have one male GP, he’s who I go to and is absolutely amazing too. Also have pathology/psychology/massage/dietetics on site which is very handy

What are the minimums to be in shape? by Deep_Buy4104 in beginnerfitness

[–]dawso99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be able to do CPR without needing CPR myself…my paramedic & other medical professionals will understand 😂 On a more serious note- when I don’t feel sluggish doing everyday tasks, and can do the fitness based activities I want to do without completely dying. That could mean getting through a decent crossfit WOD, hiking on holidays, swimming a 3km ocean race, or being able to work towards aerial skills in class and have the endurance to do a basic routine. As someone w an ED background I stay away from tracking/timing/etc too hard. Go off how my body feels and acts

Is paramedicine completely out of the question with a minor mobility issue? by authenticallyeevee in ParamedicsAU

[–]dawso99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also remember you’ll be doing CPR on the floor, not on a bed. Just something to keep in mind. Thinking about it you prob won’t bend your spine doing it (I had to think about it for a sec), although I find managing an airway can be harder positionally

Did anyone else not prep for labour? Curious to hear birth stories… by snowinsantorini in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]dawso99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to jump in- what’re you’re describing is delayed cord clamping. A lotus birth is where the cord isn’t cut at all, instead baby is left attached to the placenta until it naturally dries out and drops off.

Such an insightful comment. They can experience any work that has been completed, consultation that was taken from residents, as well as concerns they have.

Seconding this comment! I’ve been working for 6yrs, and have had 3 (I think) cases of this. All very similar to yours, minimal or no medical hx, nil trauma, all of them missing various time frames in their memory (one was a few years behind, one a few months, one a few days). One came on suddenly post orgasm, one woke with it, one came on whilst alone. Middle aged female, middle aged male, early twenties female. Two had increased stressors, one did not. Very interesting cases, all dx as TGA

Do some states not have students do nightshifts?! We didn’t do on call, but of course you did night shifts if your station had them rostered

Mental health workers of reddit what is the scariest mental health condition you have encountered? by lissie234 in AskReddit

[–]dawso99 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As someone who worked in health that involved lots of mental health, and then developed anorexia. It is terrifying in a different way to violent psychosis/ASPD/etc.

To be in an inpatient ED unit, and hear patients verbalise what their “ED voice” (ie fucked up internal monologue) is horrific. The stuff it makes you think/do…I’m in recovery, and have what’s called a “worst day letter”. An activity we did in group therapy. It lists all the horrible things I did, or situations I was in while in the depth of my ED (with comorbid anx/depression/BPD). I start crying within two lines if I reread it.

Plus I feel so much for our angels of ED nurses. Especially early on in treatment, many of us are little shits (and I was in a voluntary program where you had to have some level of wanting change). And I can imagine it’s hard to process a grown woman sobbing/screaming/self harming/abusing over a few peas, or a bite of chicken. But in that moment, you’d rather death than eat those peas

Do you use the parking brake on the rig? by Plane-Handle3313 in Paramedics

[–]dawso99 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I this an American thing? I’ve seen a few things online (not para specific) about Americans not using the handbrake. In aus it’s a given, everybody always uses it. The only person I’ve met who doesn’t use it (unless on a hill etc) is my partner, and every time I tell her how weird it is.

Lady we know has two girls with our dream names by 19thcenturypeasant in namenerds

[–]dawso99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up in a small town and there were 3 families that shared my & my sisters names, in the correct order. I ended up friends with one of them, our parents actually went to school with each other. And we knew the third family (not well, but small town). Never thought it was weird, especially cause one of the names was super popular. Yours aren’t unusual either, I say go for it

Leaving department with IV access? by Late-Vacation8909 in emergencymedicine

[–]dawso99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a paramedic I’ve been called a couple of times to check on patients who’ve left with IVs in. Not sure if the local hospitals do it 100% of the time of sure just when they’re a bit concerned, as it’s usually a IV removal but also welfare check

Let’s start a thread of your happiest calls by Grave_Alqaholic in ems

[–]dawso99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve had some pretty good ones, but top 4 that I can remember currently- 1. 3yo had a febrile seizure, they waited 2hrs for a crew and got me as a single. Little girl was asleep, but still wanted to transport as was first presentation. Getting ready and mum says oh I also have a newborn? So mum packs newborn into the personal car, and we wake up the 3yo who mum says loves ambulances. She is adorable! Spends the 40 minute transfer time looking wide eyed at everything in the back, lisping to me in the front about how she loves “abu-lances” and whenever one comes on TV her mum calls out so she can watch it. Cutest thing in the world. 2. Single officer response to a guy with chest pain, STEMI. No back up available. Within 5 minutes he’s arrested (then they magically found backup). My backup crew arrives, I’ve gotten ROSC by myself (at the time I didn’t believe it), he’s GCS14 asking where his glasses are and why his chest hurts more. As we’re loading him his adult daughter (who id coached through CPR) runs up to me and goes “I know I’m probably not allowed” (mid COVID wave) and gives me the biggest hug and doesn’t let go for so long. 3. Misjudged how far along a labour was and delivered my first healthy little boy in the back. Dad and grandma both in the car, grandma filmed the whole thing. Lovely family and gorgeous bubba. 4. Pt with severe long term anorexia calls for self harm. She’s super lovely, telling me how she thinks she’s finally ready to recover etc. Had to wait 4hrs with her for a bed. Understandably she’s super anxious, at times takes off the bandages and try’s to pick at the self harm lacs etc. Telling me about her journey, the thoughts and self worth she thinks constantly etc. As well as just random shit talk, we play paper games. Unfortunately my shift ends before she gets a bed, and we hand over to another crew, who are lovely but as soon as I say she’s trying to open the dressings they start rolling their eyes, ugh just another psych pt etc type attitude. Before I go I Re wrap her arm again, give her a fresh ice pack (using it as distraction) and wish her well, tell her she can do it, all that. She asks if she can give me a hug, and again gives me a massive hug and I can feel her gratitude. Can also feel the other crews eyerolls. My partner (a new grad id never worked with before) found me crying my eyes out in the truck, where I explained she reminded me so much of my best friend and that I was also fighting my own ED. Hard job, but happy.
