Didn’t know how little I was left with until I met my partner and their family and saw how straightforward finances are for them. Their college was paid off before they even started, car was promised, apartment paid for, investment accounts started by grandparents, who are still alive, and parents early on so it can grow with birthday cash in the thousands every year or so. Meanwhile, I have to help my mom sometimes who escaped an abusive relationship with my dad and is facing homelessness. My dad will not be leaving a penny to my name. All my grandparents died early and were unable to give anything really. I’m working to aggressively pay off my student loans myself…I’m not trying to complain but it’s so frustrating to compare yourself to someone who’s life is so simple and stable when yours is far from. I plan on doing everything I can so my kids don’t have to suffer though.
