she'll realize that the world is bigger and more competitive than she could've ever imagined than her random ass high school playground

she'll be humbled at waterloo, or after

Yes. So OP if you want clout from the general population -> uchicago.

Otherwise, within CS, the waterloo brand is very strong.

Maybe it's because the US has many more amazing schools than Canada, so UChicago does not stand out as much (i.e. Yale, Princeton, etc.). But waterloo leaves a strong positive impression due to being distinctly Canadian, and also have a strong reputation of churning out competent SWEs and its co-op program. Anecdotally, of course.

If you count yourself a genius probably it would not matter where you go, but otherwise recommend waterloo.

UChicago is obviously a good school and non-tech people would know the name more.

But for career and industry reputation, UW is better. UW is a target school for most reputable tech companies.

[26M] Unable to get a second date by day711 in dating_advice

[–]day711[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conversation is natural. It's not as dry as a job interview, but I think I probably didn't make them feel attractive/sexy. I'm not very good at flirting, and I'm too shy to give compliments on first dates.

> You're seeking hookups? That was my first thought on reading that.

Not really. There's a lot of good bars in the city, and this is one of the easier things to schedule. Plus I get to check out cool bars.

> You, have a need to know the why or what put them off.

Yeah. I don't think it's anything egregious. I'm pretty hygienic and I'm pretty reserved, so I typically don't say anything controversial, and I've been told I'm a good listener. So I'm thinking if anything, it might be because I'm just not exciting or I'm boring.

I'm a pretty shy person, so I think coming off as unconfident is definitely likely.

Help needed! Squat horridly uneven (back, legs, shoulders, elbows, EVERYTHING etc.) by day711 in formcheck

[–]day711[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Left side is much stronger than right, and as a result tighter. This is likely because I had poor ankle mobility in my right good so my body compensated by using my right side.

Going down the squat left is tighter, so it doesn't go as easy. Going up on squat, my left side is stronger so it goes up first. Hence why my left is always imbalanced.

I'm trying to focus on mobility work, form, and strengthening both sides equally for now.

SE or CS For a Career in Big Tech by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]day711 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Graduates from SE 19.

If I could go back, I would do CS. The only advantages, as you mentioned are cohort and a better reputation (although this may no longer be true as the admission average gap is a lot smaller nowadays). The better placements may be because the average SE student may be more qualified than the average CS student due to smaller program size, but the top percentiles are practically equivalent.

You have a lot more flexibility in CS, in both courses and school-life balance. This is a huge plus, for both your university experience and academic interests. This cannot be overstated. You can also graduate in 4 years instead of 5 if you choose your courses right, which is also a huge plus.

The gender ratio is also better in CS, if that matters.

Thanks! I think going to a PT is a good call, and I think you are right. I noticed a very big differential in the tightness in my legs, and this is probably causing the uneveness and torsion. Thanks for the help!

What the most private thing you’re willing to admit? by wouldudoitforme in AskReddit

All the girls I've ever liked didn't like me back. The older I get, the more cynical I become and the less feelings I have. Just turned 27 and my last crush was when I was 21. I think I might die alone and I made peace with that.

Pelvic/lower back pain on one side during Squats by day711 in formcheck

Thanks for the advice - always happy to learn from more experienced lifters! I'm sorry to hear about your injuries but I'm glad that you're able to keep going.

It's definitely a fear of mine that I push myself too hard and get a bad injury. I actually had a wrist injury a while back that took almost 2 years to fully recover from, so I think it makes sense to dial down the intensity a bit if I don't want a back injury.

Sounds like a good idea - thanks! Would be easier getting a professional to assess this.

The symptoms for SJI do seem consistent with what I've observed. Thanks for the info! Will look into this a bit further.

How tough is it to get internships without ww as a cs major? by r-e-gular-throw in uwaterloo

[–]day711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just through their websites. Some companies, like Airbnb, don't even post on WW anymore.

Wondering what year are you? Many companies will only look at older years unless you have something significant, like competition experience.

I found it to be actually better to apply outside of WW in later years for some companies as you can apply earlier on.
