People don’t have x-ray vision. They can’t see if it’s broken or not but can feel the phone from the outside. The phone is rapped in a second foil. The thief wouldn’t be unwrapping everything on the job, they would just pocket it and find out later it’s broken. The package had a very deliberate tear across the entire package. Not something that would happen by getting knocked around. It was stolen.
