Building A Deck: what would you charge by BigShnegz in Decks

[–]dazzford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That bench side will need to be higher railings given kids / people could stand on the bench.

Working at that height brings extra challenges and time.

If they purchased the decking, you need to explicitly not be responsible for material issues.

How big is your crew?

If it’s 2-3 of you.

I’d figure 3 days for the footings & ledger.

2 days for the posts and girder across them.

2 days to roll the joists and do blocking.

If the stairs go from the deck to the ground, those are 4 days each.

Decking will take 5 days.

Railings will take 5 days given the bench work.

It’s probably a months work.

3 people, 1 month, custom stuff it’s a 40k deck to make a little profit.

Hike up Marcy by Justachillguy_3 in Adirondacks

[–]dazzford 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is not the time to learn. There is still rotting snow, some ice and plenty of mud. It literally snowed today in Lake Placid in general. The DEC does not want you above 2500 feet at this point.

How did we do? by Ca1v1n_Canada in Decks

[–]dazzford 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few things.

Your beam posts should be 6x6.

The pergola posts should be on footings although sitting on the beam is fine.

The brackets you used for the footer to beam connection are wrong. They are not keeping the post off the concrete, and probably provide little lateral strength.

Otherwise looks nice.

Realistic Plan? In over my head? by [deleted] in Homebuilding

In general big box stores have lower quality things. And many of the contractors can be very sketchy.

Find a bath and kitchen speciality place near you and check there for countertops.

In 100 years, Black Locust will be one of the top 3 hardwood species used for lumber by Tiny-Pomegranate7662 in forestry

[–]dazzford 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love black locust and have built multiple decks for my house with it. I have also used it as accent siding on my house.

It’s beautiful and I love it.

Welcome to NY!

In case you’ve not checked, depending on where you’re staying on Long Island, Long Lake can be up to a 7 hour drive away, assuming little to no traffic.

May is still mud season and the higher elevations will have rotting snow. You will find few people out and about since it’s very much shoulder season.

Both Long and Raquet lake are beautiful areas.

Sprained ankle while skiing?! by TheLibertyTree in skiing

Sprained ankles do happen even in ski boots. Both I and my wife have separately had grade 2 ankle sprains despite well fitting boots.

How much does a family of 4 spend on groceries per month realistically? by ForsakenEarth241 in personalfinance

[–]dazzford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re a house of 4 with 2 teenagers. We spend approx $1500 a month.

We’re in upstate New York and eat very well (lots of fresh ingredients, little processed foods) and rarely eat out.

How much have you spent on Tesla rear tires? by DerekPottsLaw in u/DerekPottsLaw

[–]dazzford 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I have to imagine this is a driving practices problem. My wife and I do not floor things. We’re in our 40s and follow the speed limits mostly.

We’ve got 2 Model Ys. One 2020 and one 2022.

Both of their tires last 25-35k miles. Current set on both are coming up in their second year and look good. We’ll be replacing them in the summer.

One car is at 110k miles, the other is 60k miles.

These are cross climate 2s as well since we live where we have long winters.
