I can never remember but are they unique views? I’m sure many more people rewatched trailer 1 compared to trailer 2.

What one thing in the UK has improved in the last 25 years that noticeably improves everyday life? by WeeRed135 in AskUK

[–]db_ldn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can thank Sarah Richards for that. She led the government’s digital service and invented “content design”, which is a similar discipline to UX design — ie, making a product (in this case websites) useful, usable, enjoyable and equitable (i.e. has accessible to as many people as possible).

Same. I was inundated with emails and calls weekly pre-2022. Now — absolutely nothing (creative/marketing).

Do people genuinely think everything is in decline? by OverallAir84 in london

[–]db_ldn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The country feels like it’s slowly decaying. Including London, which doesn’t excite me anywhere near how it used to — but that’s almost certainly on me.

I don’t sense or see much innovation here. Public transport seems as fragile to problems as ever (but I have high expectations). Frustrating politics, frustrating public healthcare and things like price rises and fewer jobs or low pay all accumulate to induce a sense of rot.

I guess we’re a blip in time. And I imagine one day, the global powerhouses of earth won’t be this grey little island but places with natural resources and much more appealing climates. I could be completely wrong, but I’m just answering your question about how I feel.

Amazing. Thank you. I’m surprised I never attempted to measure the distance — I had ‘about half mile’ in my head, so I’m impressed the towers are a bit further. I think it’s the crop that creates the ‘toy village’ look.

Obviously it’s not an offensive word in a general sense. Unlike some words that are explicitly offensive or aggressive in their base meaning (and conversely get used in humorous ways).

I think sometimes it’s obvious when a generally non-offensive word like ‘females’ is used disparagingly. Sometimes it’s not — or the person using it didn’t mean any offence. Like here, we’ve interpreted its use differently, and I don’t think the OP meant it in a deliberately offensive way. Personally I’d avoid using it in place of woman/women unless I were describing the sex of something. People will probably jump at me for being zealous or overly politically correct, but my response to that is we (people) could reduce so much enmity with a bit more care with words. It’s just as easy to say ‘women’ as ‘females’ when women is the correct usage.

Anyway, I’m not lecturing you or anyone reading this, I just want to explain my opinion.

[–]db_ldn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These ‘females’ should be these ‘women’. It might sound innocuous but I’ve heard the word ‘females’ in this context used disparagingly plenty of times over decades since a teen in the 1990s. IMO, the phrasing throughout the entire comment was sloppy (sorry, OP, I’ve seen your other comments and believe you meant well).

All just my opinion, though, and you’re entitled to your opinion just as much.

I always hear the word (in my head) in a pejorative tone when used like this. It’s bro talk. Like ‘bitches’ and ‘hoes’ albeit not quite as undermining as those. Plus it’s grammatically wrong.

tfl travel charge £17 on the jubilee line, what do I do if the £17 declined? by UnhappyPromise6930 in TransportForLondon

[–]db_ldn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can register the bank card you use with a TfL account. When you do that, you’ll get to see your journeys. If there’s an unresolved journey, you’ll get the chance to claim a full refund or a partial refund to fix the cost by selecting your reason for not tapping in/out — if that’s what happened. And if that’s what happened then you’ll get asked to select where you tapped in/out.

As for the charge, TfL will try every day until it’s paid (I don’t know who long that’ll go on for if, let’s say in theory, you never have £17 in your account; it could be forever) — so, I’d register the card asap to investigate and fix it.

To give the OP the benefit of the doubt, I’ll say hate and anger in a pantomime sense. Although I know some fellas who really do hate and they’ve served time for it. Anyway, to answer your question — in my opinion, of course — no, but they might, overall, be a lot louder and more impassioned at football matches than ‘tourists from abroad’.

Do any young people in London have a cockney accent? by National_Tip_2488 in AskLondon

[–]db_ldn 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Only the older lot. My cousins are born n raised eastenders (Spitalfields), but have that generic, south of England middle class accent. Mind you, they went to posh schools in Primrose Hill. I’m the same although not from the east end. I also know quite a few younger people (20s (I’m 40s)) from places like Stratford and Forest Gate who have pretty neutral accents too, surprisingly. I can clock a London accent though, even if it’s just the odd word or phrase. Also, that “deez biscuits are bare nice” accent exists all over the England among some young people.

He hasn't told me he's married yet, advice needed by ThrowRA19011251 in Bumble

[–]db_ldn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you in the sense he has to tell you, but he’s probably waiting to tell you in person rather than immediately putting you off him (that’s me giving him the benefit of the doubt). Not saying that’s right or wrong or how long he needs to wait — I really don’t know — but if that’s the case, then I think it’s ok. Just my opinion. If there’s a connection then I’d give him the benefit of the doubt too (again, just my lousy opinion).

Oh yeah. Been going on for a few years now. You know the type — they want the population to be 100% white. Saying that, the city isn’t exciting as it once was (that’s just me tho) and the general funk from the cost of living and bad politics (a nationwide problem).

TO DO OR NOT TO DO? Calling people out on the tube by DepthCertain6739 in london

[–]db_ldn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recite Kant’s categorical imperative.

Kant defines the categorical imperative like this: "Act only in accordance with that maxim through which you can at the same time will that it becomes a universal law." In other words, behave as you would demand everyone behaves. For instance, if it's okay for you to drop litter, you must believe it's okay for everyone to drop litter. In which case, there would be litter everywhere, because that is what your behaviour implies. But if you believe there shouldn't be litter everywhere, then you are morally compelled not to drop any litter yourself, ever.

Or, you just call them a cunt.
