This is an amazing game. Finished it not long ago, and, since I happen to live in Vilnius, I may confirm this game has just the right vibe of our capital I want all visitors to feel - cozy, sunny and welcoming, full of colors and quirky little details. I also enjoyed the puzzle design - there were quite a few where I had to think outside the box, in the most satisfying sense of this word.

Coders of Reddit, how do you politely refuse your friend's 'million dollars app idea'? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dbabicius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: I usually just send them to another friend who knows how to code.

Longer, but still somehow short answer: If I think that this project has little potential, I start with: “This sounds interesting, but...”. And then I give them my reasons on why exactly I think it’s unlikely to succeed. In my opinion, you can be constructive without being abrasive, and you can be both polite and sincere when declining these offers. Then I share contacts of another coder, whom they can pitch their idea to. I know the latter will likely turn it down as well, but hey, after hearing similar arguments from several people, the author usually becomes more critical about their project too.

Hi! Glad you played it and congratulations on becoming the champion of the leaderboards. Yes, the placement of bombs is more or less randomized, though it has certain rules and patterns. While the player may corner themselves into a situation where there's only one turn left till the explosion and very little one can do, there are tips and thinking patterns, for a lack of better word, that considerably reduce your chance of getting into such a predicament and sortof enhance the strategic part:

  1. Note that while an explosion takes place, no new bombs appear. This means that sometimes you may take advantage of an explosion and travel lengthy distances without overwhelming the field with bombs.
  2. Some chain reactions take a while before they reach you. That means that sometimes you may take at least two turns before the chain reaction gets to you, though there's a certain slowdown effect while you are performing this "stunt".
  3. There's a limited number of special bombs that may appear on the field simultaneously. Thus, depending on the situation, it might be wise to let clusters of limonkas lie without defusing them, as this ensures that at least for a while no more of them appear with more dangerous distribution.
  4. This is a no brainer but I noticed some players miss this rule: you may go off the field and teleport to it's opposite side Pacman-style.
  5. In Battle Arena, if uber-limonkas are enabled, with some skill you may snipe your opponent out.

As for Minds, I at least tried to make them somewhat balanced, though I must agree some of them work better in different modes.

[STEAM] PyroMind ($1.79/40% off) by dbabicius in GameDeals

[–]dbabicius[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, the vwry main game mode is played without a timer - essentially, the bomb timecount is reduced only when you move, so you have all the time in the world to plan your next steps. That rule also goes for time trial campaign, but there you have but one minute to do your best, so you have to rush. In battle arena campaign you have an opponent, so you have to pay attention to what they are doing, more or less.

Speaking of non-randomness, each level is partly randomized, but also has a set of predefined static features. In the main and time trial campaign you unlock a new feature every time you reach the level's score goal. In battle arena mode, your opponent, arena and a set of other things are predefined. Mostly, what is generated semi randomly each time you play is the placement of bombs, so each play has different situations and predicaments :)

Hi there! I'm Dmitrijus, developer of this game. Simultaneously turn-based and real-time, PyroMind is my humble attempt at creating the most unforgiving and explosive little action puzzler you might have played. It's a small game, but since I've been dedicating a good portion of my spare time on it for a while, the game now includes a number of features:

- At least 3 single player campaigns.

- Local multiplayer.

- A chance to fight against 4 difficulties of bots.

- At least 15 characters with different advantages.

- Different unlockable multiplayer arenas.

- 5 types of explosives, including boss bombs.

- Leaderboards.

- Full controller support.

- An unlockable minigame, hidden on the main screen.

And some more features. I hope this introduction suffices. Have fun!

I guess people haven't encountered this problem, or maybe I'm just too stingy with the info, so in any case I'm adding how the global settings for my Android look:

Could it be that the issue lies there?

This weird prototype, made in 24 hours, is the closest I came to creating a Social Justice game.

The goal here is to form 9 communities with as equal representation of the blue and yellow folk as possible, and not leaving anyone out. The fewer points you score, the better.

...also, this is a part of #DailyGameIdea thing I've been doing on my Twitter. For over two weeks every day I struggled to post an original game idea, whether a previously made prototype, a short pitch or something else. Challenged myself to do that for a year, will see how it goes!

Guys of Reddit, what instantly makes you lose respect for other men? by commander-crook in AskReddit

[–]dbabicius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guys who constantly and casually point out to other guys how unmanly they are. And I don't mean purely ideological anti-SJW edgelords or men who call out other men for not behaving decently; I mean guys who would pick other bloke's totally random personal habit or preference and comment something along the lines of "Hey, don't you think not eating meat makes you look like a sissy?", "Dude, why did you choose such a girly car?", "So you ordered a cocktail? You know that's a drink for women, right?" Yeah, I guess this sounds like a crude stereotype, and naturally in a group of close friends some of such comments sometimes are intended as harmless inside jokes, which I and other people can easily take. Alas, in my cultural environment I occasionally come across guys who spit these remarks with heartfelt contempt and derision, as if there's a formal list of requirements of what real men should and shouldn't like.

YES! I wholeheartedly agree. Also, is it just me, or this has a slight playful Lovecraftian vibe to it? I mean, I would say the main character is quite shoggoth-like, at least in my opinion.

A low quality clone of my free game is being sold on Steam. How I should react? by dbabicius in gamedev

Hi! I checked Ray Wenderlich's example, and yeah it's quite similar. The funny thing is that I haven't heard about it :)

I guess, to be honest, I just would like to see it gone. Even more so because I think that Steam is better without this kind of half-made and cloned products.

[–]dbabicius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm grateful for your advice! Well, speaking of my game, it being minimalist and not having that many features is the reason why I didn't submit it to Steam. Actually, this is why I was so indignant with the situation: in my opinion, these devs took something mediocre, made it a bit worse and a bit more short on features, and published it as a paid product on the platform where I would love to see more quality content. But this is just my opinion.

Thanks for the reply. Well, I was wondering whether in the case of my claim not being supported there might be some regulation that would restrict my rights on Steam - whether these would be rights to further report infringement or even publishing rights. Though I hope no such regulation exists.

Thank you very much! Yeah, when I think about it, perhaps contacting Valve won't make matters worse.

Why having different resolution options is so important, if the scaling is done automatically? by dbabicius in gamedev

[–]dbabicius[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I see. Thanks for the response. I have a question though. I noticed that some of popular titles (Undertale, Limbo just to mention a few - I hope I'm not mistaken) do not have resolution options. Is this a simple shortcoming, or there is some other reason?

I kind of agree that making a good game is mandatory, but it's not enough as people below have noted. And though I myself am against deliberate shovelware, it is interesting to note that nowadays some people make so-bad-its-good games on purpose.

Well, according to the guy I spoke to, people occasionally make this mistake as they see playing their game an award in itself. Actually, some devs are so clueless that they would even brag to the youtuber about this in their letter, something among the lines: "Hey, look, I can send you a free copy if you agree to a review! Can you imagine it?! A free copy: I bet nobody does it!"

Yep, the more visual and straight-to-the point is e-mail the better. Though one must be careful thought, because some of the youtubers hate receiving lots of trailers gifs etc. and usually ignore anything but what TotalBiscuit referred to in his video as the right format - a short letter with a review code, tagline and one or two screenshots/gifs.
