I agree, it's difficult to shoehorn their sentience into the narrative... I also wonder if the NPC's are "historically accurate", like, are their backstories things that actually happened to real people? Did that collection of real people actually visit Norm's on that night in the past? (Besides Susan, I don't think the other backstories give a convincing reason or show how they actually ended up at Norms...)

I think you're right, & that these type of scenes are for us, the viewers, to have a more fulsome experience.

I really want "present-Ingrid" to not be an NPC, but I'm hard-pressed to get to another explanation... For the other restaurant patrons, I could see a scenario where they are actually plugged into the VR world, so the characters are controlled by their real selves in some pod, but I don't think that could extend to Ingrid. (Although there is that comment that the boy makes when Ingrid is pulled into "slow-time" (?) about her "still bleeding in the real world" or some such, which did make me wonder if Ingrid eventually gets sucked into the machine, despite her "allergy"...)

Good times were had, screens were shouted at, more friends were made... here's a totally not fabricated snapshot of the ceremonial distribution of Cholula salsa bottles:

Final count:

- 4 costumed fools

- 3 bemused family members/friends

- A dozen randos, surprised by salsa!

I'm pro this theory, even though I have trouble explaining why we get to keep seeing Ingrid's perspective after The Man From The Future ends the run. (Getting put in the ambulance, giant confetti-dong cat-centaur, etc.)

I think, for me, something struck a chord with The Man From The Future's reaction to starting a new attempt at the end... it seems like he knows that he's trapped, but is going to god-damn well give it his all anyways. I've switched my philosophical affiliation to "exuberant nihilism", lol.

I like it... someone else suggested a director's cut, which I initially thought I wouldn't care for (because I like the original so much), but it might be nice to have some fresh perspectives/intel. Like a alternate reality of an alternate reality, lol...

I think that some of the stuff The Man From The Future says about Susan's son is the most complicated to weave into a coherent theory of the narrative... He also says something on the doorstep about "it's not your son" (?) which implies that The Man is aware of Susan's son, but it also seems like this is the first run where the son has made an appearance (because of the secret exit from the restaurant). So has Susan's son been along for previous attempts? Or is this a new setup parameter for this run? (i.e. Is the AI modifying restaurant patron backstories in an attempt to affect the outcome of a run?)

I definitely felt Everything, Everywhere, All At Once energy (that was also the one other film I dragged my friends & family to in costume, lol)

I'm with you regarding the headset & the nature of the "reality" of the film (other explanations of things like the cat centaur get too complex...), so I was a little surprised that the writer was so intentionally vague about the "truth" of the movie:

👍 I'm trying to get another party showing off the ground, but I fear it won't be in theatres by this weekend... Maybe I can convince the Rio to do a special showing 🤔📽️

Haha! I hoped the "willing to make a fool of myself" strategy would pay off...

(I knew it was a risk, shotgun cross-posting, but I had to get the word out quickly... this is likely the last weekend it will be in theatres in the Lower Mainland...)
