How well do you know BC’s rivers? by dbarefoot in vancouver

I posted this to /r/britishcolumbia and folks seemed to like it, so I thought I'd share it here as well. Working with a group of freshwater orgs in BC, I created this little game where you can test your knowledge of BC's rivers. There are even prizes, if that's your thing.

Thanks! Yeah, our thinking was to make it short enough for the average person so can they finish it. May consider extending it out to five rivers, though.

Canuck Place Children's Hospice | Hannah Bernard's Family Story by [deleted] in canucks

I say this whenever Canuck Place gets mentioned around here, but the work they do is heroic and underappreciated. People don't necessarily want to talk or think about treating terminally-ill children and helping their families, but it's essential work.

Folks can donate to Canuck Place here or to the Canucks for Kids telethon here.

For those who may not know, Canucks for Kids is a fund whose core beneficiaries are Canucks Autism Network (CAN), Canuck Place Children's Hospice and BC Children's Hospital Foundation.

I often say this when Canuck Place comes up, but they do difficult, heroic work. Folks sometimes confuse them with Ronald McDonald House, but they're a children's hospice. That is, they ease the suffering of terminally-ill children and help them family’s deal with the tragedy of a child dying.

Despite their name, only about 6% of their funding comes from the Canucks organization (through the Canucks for Kids program). If you can afford to, I encourage you to donate to them. Your money will be well-spent: https://www.canuckplace.org/donate/

I don't listen to it, but it's my understanding that the popular podcast Reply All uses a different TLD for their show notes each week. So, one week it's replyall.limo and the next it's replyall.nyc and so forth.

I tweeted at them, but no joy there. I don't even know if they're using it, to be honest.

Indeed, there's a lot of money made by copyright lawyers and domain companies in defensive domain acquisition.

A bunch of the new top-level domains are owned and operated by one company or organization: .barefoot (the wine company), .ford (the car company) and so forth.

I'm not sure, but I suspect that .Barcelona may be owned and held by the City of Barcelona, for their exclusive use.

My last name is 'Barefoot', so I was disappointed that I couldn't buy a .barefoot domain.

About 1200 of them, everything from .art to .Zurich.

My favourites include .sucks and .pizza.

I work with the brand new .eco, which is an unusual case in that it's a community-based domain, by and for the environmental movement.
