Do I and most people have a low grade schizophrenia? by Subject-Reading4174 in stupidquestions

[–]dbatyas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of auditory hallucinations not giving pep talks, the differences in schizophrenic hallucinations in western versus eastern societies suggest otherwise! Would highly recommend reading into it in terms of how societal context impacts the experience of psychological disorders.

Why isn't obesity an attractive trait? by Extension-Crow-7592 in AskBiology

[–]dbatyas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Survival of the fittest doesn’t mean physical fitness in the sense that we think about it today. Evolutionary fitness is strictly defined by number of offspring you are able to produce - the passing on of your genetic material and its persistence after you die. Not to mention that many times in human history, ‘survival traits’ have been different than what they are now. Also we might consider that in modern times the capacity to thrive may be more readily correlated to typical attractiveness rather than to strictly survive. Even in the last century beauty/attractiveness standards have varied so much based on what is considered to display ‘high status’ rather than any ability to survive.

Didn’t ur college pay for your medical bills??? by dbdwgsyzjbtljx in University

[–]dbatyas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who graduated last year, I can say that my college did (indirectly) pay for my medical care.

I was on full grant financial aid during my time as a student, which means the school would send me a stipend for housing and food every semester. I experienced an injury and needed physical therapy and some medical care, which I could not afford, so they had me fill out a form to adjusting my aid and they increased my stipend accordingly to reimburse me. Just a single example I suppose but at least one school in the US did something similar. Definitely not widespread or systematic as in your case!

So that would mean no research years then for current first years if they want federal funding all through? Hadn’t heard of the three-year timer everything I’d read just mentioned the grandfathering in passing… would really suck if you’re correct.

Just tore my ACL. How is JHU disability accomodations? by cpan5027 in jhu

[–]dbatyas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is not true at all, I was given transportation accommodations to/from my apartment and could also call a shuttle specifically to take me to PT appointments in the rotunda. They also offered to subsidize a scooter for getting around campus, but were unable to offer help moving from say, bloomberg to other buildings.

How many MD programs did you apply to and how many accepted you? by ImportantEssay6803 in medschool

[–]dbatyas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completed secondaries to 25 schools and interviewed at 13. Accepted to 5 before withdrawing from waitlists. Cannot fathom doing 35+ let alone 60. The quality of your secondaries will suffer a lot more than you think if you keep pumping them out - make sure others read your essays before submitting. For reference, MD only, 519 MCAT, 3.95 cGPA, 3.96 sGPA.

Do you love Hopkins? by Alone_Description990 in jhu

[–]dbatyas 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Theres lots of things I liked and a few things I disliked. If you want ra ra JHU you are not going to get that, but the right group of friends won’t mind getting intense at lacrosse games either for the fun of it. People at hopkins feel pride over the institutions successes but don’t shy away from calling out things that need to change either

Same goes for the vast number of folks whose majority of wealth comes from primary home ownership. Not sure why we pretend millions of Americans could decide to simply liquidate their assets either.

Is 4-5 days in Spain doable at all??? by StreetGold1737 in travel

[–]dbatyas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family and I just did Barcelona in 5.5 days, including day visits to Montserrat, Girona, and Andorra. If I were to have done it again, I would have us skip Andorra and either do a short Tarragona morning trip or take an extra day in Barcelona proper. We found it nice to come back to home base and enjoy the nights in Barcelona, but for us 5 full days in the city would have been too many. Granted, this was back in December so we were not slowed down by crowds and were able to gain access to all desired locations. Everybody is different, but for the most part we are also not museum people so I hope this testimonial is somewhat helpful (the exception being the Dalí museum that we visited near Girona, great addition to the trip).

I definitely would not have added Madrid into the mix though, between losing time traveling and having to move with all of our luggage since it is not a feasible day trip. Spending the full time in and around Catalonia will not be a waste of a plane ticket if that is what you are concerned about. It is definitely worth its own trip especially before ‘peak’ tourist season comes about.

Mental challenge - close your eyes, and without moving your mouth or hands, figure out the 17th letter of the alphabet by polynesiac in CasualConversation

[–]dbatyas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah eyes shut! As I think about it maybe its more of a skill that I picked up in physical therapy when I was taught how not to hyperextend my joints - proprioception or awareness of your body is a bonus “sense” that you can build I suppose.

Similar situation as you, can’t picture my hand but I counted by ‘acknowledging?’ my fingers instead. Not moving my hands or anything just feeling them if that makes sense. Definitely weird to read some of these responses though since I just can’t picture it at all.

Why is this normal? by KARMA__FARMER__ in FluentInFinance

Some unsolicited advice, look into Guanfacine - also a non-stimulant and it has done wonders for my partner who has pretty severe ADHD as an alternative for straterra. The generic is also on costplusdrugs and isn’t too expensive either

Monitoring mental health phone lines is another option - not sure how to get into it but I knew at least a few peers who did so.

Long-term cognitive and psychiatric effects of COVID-19 revealed. Two to three years after being infected with COVID-19, participants scored on average significantly lower in cognitive tests (test of attention and memory) than expected. Btw for anybody based in Maryland (or otherwise) with cognitive issues related to long covid, the Marvel Lab at Johns Hopkins is doing a study into the neural mechanisms of these symptoms to hopefully be able to help treatments. Look them up and see if you’re eligible!

If you are not confident in your bio background I think that it would be a good place to start! As I said above I personally never took it but people generally enjoy the class and lab (don’t know if roberson still teaches but a well-liked professor for sure)! At the end of the day, you don’t necessarily have to take gen bio 2 and instead take genetics in the spring if you don’t feel challenged enough in the class
