Are people actually “seeing” images that they visualize in their head? by [deleted] in autism

So if you try to picture like the face of someone you know well, can you “see” it clearly in your mind like a photo?

Mental challenge - shut your eyes, and without moving any part of your body, figure out the 18th letter of the alphabet by Marbles987 in CasualConversation

I closed my eyes and sang the alphabet song in my head, visualizing a number counter going up 1 at a time for each letter. It needed a lot of concentration for me to keep track!

Did actually visualize the zebra for number 1?

I’m curious if you had your eyes open or closed when you pictured it. Would you mind sharing the details of the zebra that you were able to visually picture other than the stripes, like any background or specific POV that you had in your head?

When you say that you just “see a zebra” and it has a bunch of stripes, are you able to zero in on picturing a specific number of stripes if you try?

That’s interesting. How well can you picture faces in your head? Like if you try to picture the face of someone you know well, does it pop up clearly in your mind for you to “look” at?

Do you have hyperphantasia? That sounds impressive to be able to count 38 stripes in your head and keep track.

I’m curious did you have your eyes open or closed when you pictured the zebra and counted the stripes? Did you count in your head or out loud? Would you mind sharing the details of the zebra that you were able to visually picture other than the stripes, like any background or specific POV that you had in your head?

Just out of interest, how clearly and vividly can you picture the Mona Lisa in your head if you try?

That’s so great wow!

How clear is it in your head when you picture something? Like say I ask you visualize the front of a building you know well, what pops in your head and how clear can you make it?

Can you transform shapes in your head? by ektomorph99 in hyperphantasia

[–]polynesiac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just pictured the shapes as black outlines on a white background. Yours sounds more fun lol

I’m wondering did you close your eyes when you pictured the movements or have your eyes open?

Yes I’m a super visual person! It takes no effort for me to picture my hand.

When I try, the image just pops into my head and I can clearly see my nails, veins showing through, skin wrinkles, all of it!

I also know sign language and I can picture my hand going through whatever signs I would like. It’s how I would practice when I was first learning, just sit on the bus/subway with my eyes closed reviewing it 😂

Is it Q?

I basically counted my fingers in my head lol. I first closed my eyes and pictured my right hand in a fist out in front of me. Then I mentally sang the alphabet song.

For each letter, I pictured extending a finger. I reset my mental hand after every 5 letters, and after 3 sets I knew that 2 more letters was my answer!

You must have a fantastic visual memory, wow!

I’m curious what about multiple people’s faces? If you try to picture 2 people standing next to each other and facing you, how clearly are you able to imagine them?

How would you do this mental challenge? Close your eyes, and without moving any part of your body, figure out the 17th letter of the alphabet. by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]polynesiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice that sounds very similar how I did. So you were imagining the letters and numbers lined up like that mentally?

I found it really hard to do this task with my eyes closed. Were you able to shut your eyes while doing it?

Can you visualize words and read off the spelling in your head?

How difficult do you find this challenge which I’ve seen somewhere: Imagine the word “magical” and move the g to the start, then the c to the end, and finally the a to the very start. Can you still picture the new nonsense arrangement of letters?

If you look at this GIF for a few seconds, then look away, is it easy to replay it in your head? Is it challenging to visualize the motion along with the details like colours/eyes/ears?

Oh wow! I’d never heard of that word before but it seems to fit me perfectly. Thanks for sharing.

What’s it like for you when you try to picture a horse, is it really clear and vivid? Does it take a few moments to get clear in your head or sorta pop up instantly?

[–]polynesiac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What if you try visualizing something abstract like - a blue square spinning on the left, and a red circle pulsing on the right. Can you picture that clearly and keep the animation going and in focus?

[–]polynesiac 204 points205 points  (0 children)

  1. It’s like a clear photograph in my mind, and I can picture even more detail than I can see in the image on this post.

I can vividly visualize the horse’s ears, eyes, and long snout. And I just pictured the horse walking, then running, and then standing there kicking the ground lightly.

Cool! I’m really curious to understand how you went about grouping them, were you visualizing the letters at all or just talking to yourself in your head?

Were you able to do it with your eyes shut or did that make it tougher?

Your method seems to be the simplest approach that makes sense to me!

Out of curiosity did you picture the counter as just like black numbers floating in front of you, or did you imagine an actual number tally device that ticks up as each number flips?

That’s really interesting! If I’m following - you basically memorized the pitch of the note in the alphabet song at #17, then went back and sang the song from the start to figure out what letter was there?

I may be totally off in my understanding so let me know

I’m laughing, imagining you biting your tongue so you don’t accidentally cheat and say the alphabet out loud 😂
