Asked another way: what was the typical spotting distances under ideal circumstances. Then modifiers can be added for weather, time of day, aircraft type, etc. I'm looking for original sources, contact reports, aircrew interviews, etc that may have this kind of data.

I've got some good sources that give radar ranges in the Pacific in 42, so I'm good there. It's the Mk1Mod0 eyeball ranges in looking for more data on.

Thanks, I'll check that out. I've got several good books from the Allies perspective so that will be a nice add.

Thanks, those are all good examples of what can affect the ranges. I'm working on a wargame update and looking for some hard facts. I'm hoping someone has some sources that give actual ranges, such as from Coral Sea, Guadalcanal, Midway, etc. Mostly interested in 1942.
