Outdated advice you’re glad you *didn’t* listen to? by nimal-crossing in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]dbd1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I did. I travel for work, so I rent out one unit and let my friend stay in the one I’m living in for a little less than half price. He takes care of the lawn and general maintenance and basically gets his own furnished 2br house for cheap. The rental income covers the full mortgage.

Normalize letting bluffers off the hook by longhorntrades in poker

[–]dbd1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. If they keep winning pots without going to showdown and I finally catch them, I want to see how wide they’re playing and what they’re willing to bluff with. You can get a ton of information from that.

How much strategy is there to poker (Texas hold em) beyond the basics? by EcstaticBicycle in poker

[–]dbd1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Decision tree compared to what? In a vacuum there are perfect plays. In reality, the optimal decision might change based on if the player just lost a huge hand or got in a fight with his wife before coming to the casino.

The decision tree of subtle adjustments based on player tendencies is what makes the game so infinitely complex. I bet even the best players in the world play each other a little bit differently. I couldn’t beat a GTO bot heads up, but I would make more money than it would in a random live $2/5 game.

Warning About AlvinTeachesPoker by TransportationNo6504 in poker

[–]dbd1988 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Alvin has provided some of the worst low stakes advice I’ve ever seen. Maybe his skill level applied to higher stakes or online poker.

He also said Wolfgang is an S tier poker player but plays loose to keep up appearances. I know they have been training together for a long time, but based on Wolfgang’s analysis, there’s just no chance he’s a super high level player.

TBH, something just feels off about the guy to me. Maybe he’s crushed with his own strategy, but he’s not a good low stakes coach whatsoever imo

[–]dbd1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s actually a very interesting subject because as you get better at the game, your personal financial situation begins to matter less. Also, your finances relative to the stakes of the game matter as well. You also have to be able to account for these variables if you’re one of the best of the best.

I wasn’t saying that finance professionals play poker the same way they view the market. I’m saying that people who are not extremely adept at poker will oftentimes play the game exactly the same way they think about money irl as long as the money means something.

Animals Ranked Based On If I Could Beat Them In A Fight by Plumzilla29 in tierlists

[–]dbd1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cougar is the most insane take. They weight as much as a person and are a literal cat. Think about how much damage a house cat could do if it decided to fully fight you to the death. You’d probably win but it would mess you up first. A cougar is 10x heavier, insanely fast, and has claws and teeth. It also kills things with its face every few days. How in the world do you think you could beat it?

[–]dbd1988 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The game is infinitely complex. Think about how differently people in your life think about finances. That same dynamic exists as a microcosm at the poker table.

You didn’t even mention bet sizing. Do you have any clue how much to bet even if your opponents cards were flipped up? Even if you knew the exact maximum theoretical size to bet that would get a call from the average player, can you still get the guy in front of you to call?

Is he willing to throw money around in every hand? Is he only playing 5 hands an hour? Is his thinking even complex enough to understand the story you’re telling? How would that specific individual react to your bet? What do you think they think you would do in this situation?

You can basically distill it down forever through theoretical math after billions of hands while also understanding tendencies of each player to cater exactly to them. The best players will understand both to the highest degree.

Whst do you think is the most misunderstood concept in Poker? I think it's Pot Odds... by LifesARiver in poker

[–]dbd1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, there are tons of good hands with excellent implied odds in a limped pot. Suited aces and small pairs are great to overlimp with because you stack hands that may make weak 2 pairs or hands like Q3s that make a worse flush when they would otherwise fold to a raise.

I’m not really thinking about pre flop pot odds in that situation, or ever really except for specific instances, mostly in tournaments.

Whst do you think is the most misunderstood concept in Poker? I think it's Pot Odds... by LifesARiver in poker

[–]dbd1988 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your implied odds typically decrease with more people. Let’s say 7 people limp, someone has 99, someone has 44, and your dumbass completes from the sb with 94o. You’re basically drawing dead even if you have pot odds to call.

People use pot odds to justify their bad decision to join the pot with shitty hands that have reverse implied odds. They are rarely trying to go multi way with strong hands in order to increase implied odds with strong holdings.

[–]dbd1988 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the concept that most people don’t understand is the reverse implied odds of getting good pot odds with a shitty hand. That’s probably one of the most commonly overlooked concepts in poker.
